This is so horrible! Three babies treated as if they were disposable. Inconceivable!
 
So she was caught when she left the 1st one on the side of the road tofreeze to death. So the next two she just put into bags in her car.

What a piece of work. Hope she enjoyed her vacation she will do time for this for sure. Probably not enough time though...

She refused to give a DNA sample.

What I'd like to know is ... how did she hide not just one, but three pregnancies? She was living with her boyfriend at the time of Crystal's death. Surely he knew she was pg. Seems like her parents might have known too. Did any of her family or friends know she was pg the other two times? Is she going down alone for this, or is she taking others with her? It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

She is a real slob, imo. That's the nicest thing I can think of to say about her.

ROCKFORD (WREX) - The Baby Crystal investigation leads police to two infant skeleton's in the trunk of a car. Prosecutors say the car belongs to 28-year-old Katie Stockton, the woman they believe is Baby Crystal's mother. Just last week Stockton was charged with murdering the newborn in December 2004.

Investigators went looking for any cars that had a connection to Stockton. Late yesterday they found her 1993 navy blue Saturn at an impound lot in South Beloit.

"You never know where cases are going to take you," said Winnebago County Sheriff Dick Meyers.

WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX) - The woman charged in the death of a baby left along a roadway nearly five years ago goes before a judge.

Katie L. Stockton, 28, appeared via video teleconference Friday to hear the charges against her. She faces two counts of First Degree Murder. If found guilty, she would face 20 to 60 years in prison under Illinois law.

Stockton was also assigned a public defender by the judge, and her bail was set at $1 million. The Winnebago County State's Attorney's office plans to seek a grand jury indictment against her.

Assuming these children belong to the car's owner, baby Crystal's mother. What mother (or any person) could live with knowledge that two children were in the trunk of her car? I've never been a person who favored the death penalty; now, however, I see two (three) reasons for it.

Mom looks like 'girl next door'. I don't understand how a mother could do this. So many would have loved to adopt those babies.

The crime shocked authorities and residents in Rockford, Ill., who named the newborn Baby Crystal and organized her funeral. An autopsy showed she died from exposure.

A police squad recently reopened the case and focused on Katie L. Stockton, 28, who fled her home Sunday night.

Winnebago County, Ill., authorities filed charges Monday and got a tip Tuesday night that Stockton might be in Merriam, where a friend from the Rockford area had moved several years ago.

Illinois investigators worked with Kansas City&#8217;s FBI fugitive task force to track Stockton to an extended-stay hotel off Interstate 35. Stockton checked in under a fake name and paid cash, authorities said.

When police knocked on her door Wednesday, Stockton appeared surprised to see law enforcement officers, said Kansas City Detective John Cooley, a task force member.

Authorities booked Stockton into the Wyandotte County jail, where Winnebago County investigators interviewed her. On Thursday, Stockton waived extradition, and investigators drove her back to Illinois.

Police said DNA linked Stockton to the infant, who was found in 9-degree weather in a ditch in the yard of Stockton&#8217;s parents.

Investigators found the naked baby, who had curly black hair and blue eyes, in a white trash bag Dec. 17, 2004, with bloody clothes that appeared to belong to the mother.

An autopsy determined the baby probably had died a week to 10 days earlier.

Authorities said they questioned Stockton several times.

Over the years, authorities ran out of leads. In recent months, authorities struggled to get a DNA sample from Stockton to test against the baby&#8217;s. Stockton resisted, but investigators eventually got the sample, police said.

The woman police say is Baby Crystal's mom is on her way back to Winnebago County, to face murder charges in the newborn's death.

You may remember Baby Crystal. She was found dumped on the side of a rural Winnebago County road in December 2004.

Now, after more than four-and-a-half years later and countless interviews, Winnebago County Sheriff's Police arrest a Rockton woman they say is the mother.

Katie L. Stockton, 28, was arrested Wednesday in Kansas City, Kansas. According to Stockton's Facebook page, she was on vacation in Kansas City.

Stockton appeared in court there and waived extradition. Winnebago County detectives were driving her back to the jail here.

"I think it's terrible that it happened in the first place," Winnebago County Sheriff Dick Meyers, said. "It's extremely rewarding that we can bring it to a conclusion."

If Stockton did dump her baby in a garbage bag, she didn't go very far to do it. This is the Stockton family home on Will Road, just a few feet from the scene of the crime. Meyers says Stockton and her family were extensively interviewed at the time but never considered suspects.

"We talked to them, but when you're talking then you don't talk to them as suspects because you have no reason to suspect," he said.

13 News went to the Stockton home, and though the door was open, nobody responded to our calls. But according to Stockton's Facebook page she worked at the Rockton Inn. The owner there wouldn't comment except to say she was in a state of shock.

One neighbor tells us she's surprised the arrest took so long. "With all the technology, I wonder why they coudn't have found out sooner," Janice Mockus said.

As for the baby's father, neither Meyers nor Winnebago County State's Attorney Joe Bruscato would give any information about him - including whether they know who he is.

Meyers and others stressed that if you have an infant you can't take care of, you can drop it off at any safe haven spot with no questions asked.

Now experts are trying to determine how the babies died and whether they were related to Katie L. Stockton, 28, of Rockton, who was arrested earlier this month in the newborn girl's death nearly five years ago.

It was only after Stockton's arrest that investigators discovered her 1993 blue Saturn had been sitting in an impound lot for the past year. So they towed it to a Winnebago County Sheriff's Department facility to search for more clues _ maybe blood, hair or fibers. They found the remains instead.

On Tuesday, a forensic pathologist and an anthropologist will conduct autopsies, the first step to unraveling the mystery, said Sheriff Richard Meyers.

"I've been around long enough, nothing is really surprising anymore," Meyers said. "But to find two little babies like that and possibly know that they laid in that car all year long ... it's shameful."

A public defender was assigned to Stockton's case, but neither Meyers nor Winnebago County State's Attorney Joe Bruscato knew who it was. The Public Defender's office did not immediately return a phone message from The Associated Press on Monday. A phone number listed for Stockton's mother was disconnected. A phone number could not be found for her father.

Police originally questioned Stockton, then 24, in December 2004 after a newborn girl was discovered frozen along a dead-end road near the home of Stockton's parents. But Stockton, who was not living at home at the time, denied the child was hers and nobody knew whether she'd been pregnant, Meyers said.

Rockford residents named the infant Baby Crystal and organized her funeral.

Meyers said his department always considered Stockton a person of interest

Investigators in recent months developed enough evidence to charge Stockton in the death of Baby Crystal, Meyers said. He declined to provide details other than to say police have evidence Stockton is the girl's mother, despite having no reports of her being pregnant before or after giving birth to one son, who is now 9 years old.

Stockton missed a hearing Aug. 3 to decide if her probation on a forgery conviction should be revoked for refusing to give a DNA sample required as a condition of her probation, Bruscato said.

She was arrested two days later at a Merriam, Kan., motel by an FBI fugitive task force. She is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the Baby Crystal case, and is being held in the Winnebago County Jail on $1 million bail. Meyers said her son is with is with his father.

A hearing is set for Sept. 3, when prosecutors may present probable cause, although they could decide to take the case to a grand jury instead, Bruscato said.

After Stockton's arrest, authorities learned her car had been sitting in the South Beloit impound lot since last August, when she was charged with driving on a suspended license. It was the same car she was driving in 2004, Meyers said.

He said it appears the infants' bodies were in the car when it was towed, but experts must confirm that, as well as whether the babies were killed and if Stockton was responsible.

"To take two young babies and discard them like garbage, it's hard to imagine somebody could do that," Meyers said.

Janet Sherer expressed disgust Thursday in learning that the bones of two babies were concealed in a vehicle her company towed a year ago and kept impounded.

The fact that the babies may belong to Katie Stockton, who was arrested and charged with murder last week in connection with the death of another child, made her &#8220;sick.&#8221;

&#8220;This is the most disgusting thing I&#8217;ve ever heard of in my life,&#8221; said Sherer, co-owner of Ace Towing in Beloit, Wis. &#8220;It&#8217;s enough to make you want to throw up.&#8221;

Baby Crystal is the girl who was born alive but left to die in frigid cold weather in December 2004. The baby was found dead in a discarded plastic bag left along the side of a rural road.

The sad story of Baby Crystal and her mother turned bizarre Wednesday when the Winnebago County Sheriff&#8217;s Department and state&#8217;s attorney&#8217;s office learned that a vehicle that belonged to Stockton was being kept in an Ace Towing vehicle storage lot at 127 Blackhawk Blvd. in South Beloit.

Winnebago County Sheriff&#8217;s deputies found the 1993 Saturn, inspected the trunk and made the gruesome discovery. The Sheriff&#8217;s Department took possession of the vehicle and is holding it an undisclosed location as evidence.

Sherer said the car was stored in an outdoor lot near a rear fence. She even recalled her husband making a comment to her about the condition of the car.

&#8220;He said, &#8216;Jan, that car smells funny.&#8217;&#8220;

Sherer said the law does not allow tow companies to enter towed vehicles.

&#8220;We&#8217;re not allowed to go through the car, the trunk, the glove compartment. It would be like someone going through your house without you knowing it. We can only hook it, tow it and lock it up.&#8221;

Sherer also said she remembers Stockton calling her husband several weeks later in an attempt to retrieve her car.

&#8220;She called once and wanted to make a deal with my husband. He went down to the impound and waited and waited, but she never showed up.&#8221;

Ace Towing charges a $30-a-day storage fee, which is on top of the $100 initial towing charge.

South Beloit police came into possession of the vehicle on Aug. 15, 2008. Winnebago County Court records showed officer Dan Kutz pulled Stockton over at 3:31 p.m. in the 400 block of Gardner Street and arrested her on charges of driving on a suspended license and registration.

Police Chief Tom Fearn said Stockton was taken to the Winnebago County Jail, and her car was impounded.

Fearn said only clothing and miscellaneous items were taken from the vehicle at the time. He said the trunk and glove compartment were not checked, which is normal for the charges she faced.

&#8220;You have no reason to do that,&#8221; Fearn said. &#8220;At that time she wasn&#8217;t even a suspect (in Baby Crystal&#8217;s death). She wasn&#8217;t even flying on the radar.&#8221;

Fearn went on to say his department follows the state statute guidelines for impounding vehicles.

&#8220;We do a cursory examination,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We ask the owner if anything valuable needs to be removed, but in most cases, I don&#8217;t mean for this to sound wrong, but it&#8217;s just stuff.&#8221;

Mayor Randy Kirichkow said he is embarrassed by the Police Department&#8217;s failure to properly search the car.

&#8220;It&#8217;s extremely disappointing to say the least and embarrassing,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I haven&#8217;t talked to the officer involved. I haven&#8217;t seen the police report. But, hopefully, there&#8217;s a valuable lesson learned here.

&#8220;It&#8217;s one thing if you do a traffic stop and do a citation and don&#8217;t search it, but from what I understand there&#8217;s supposed to be pictures taken and everything inside the vehicle is supposed to inventoried. If the tow company were to tamper with the vehicle, we would have that information.&#8221;

Little happened today at Katie L. Stockton&#8217;s initial court appearance, but law enforcement officials are hoping for breakthroughs in the Baby Crystal case this week.

A lot is expected to happen in relation to charges of murder for the 2004 death of her newborn girl and the investigation into the death of two babies whose decomposed bodies were found in Stockton&#8217;s car last week.

Tuesday, possibly into Wednesday, forensic experts will examine the skeletons, which should shed light on how many bones were found and whether the babies suffered any trauma before their deaths. DNA samples also will be sent for testing.

By the end of the week, Winnebago County officials hope to have the results of Stockton&#8217;s DNA test, which was obtained shortly after her Aug. 5 arrest. Those results should tell investigators whether Stockton is, in fact, the mother of Baby Crystal, who was found frozen to death on the side of a country road in December 2004. Stockton&#8217;s DNA also will be compared against the DNA of the bones found last week.

Stockton, who is in the Winnebago County Jail on $1 million bond, has not been charged in the deaths of the two other infants. Judge Steven Vecchio is presiding in the case.

Several men who knew Stockton have voluntarily submitted DNA samples for testing, Winnebago County Sheriff Dick Meyers said today.

Detectives are sorting through 100-plus items taken from Stockton&#8217;s car, trying to determine what gets sent to the crime lab.

Detectives became suspicious of Stockton this summer when she repeatedly refused to submit her DNA to the state&#8217;s crime database, a condition of her plea in a felony forgery case.

&#8220;It makes you ask, &#8216;Why isn&#8217;t she doing that? Is there some reason why she&#8217;s not doing that?&#8217;&#8221; Meyers said. &#8220;It&#8217;s things like that that pique your interest in someone.&#8221;

Key dates
Today: David Doll, a first deputy public defender, appeared in court with Katie L. Stockton. Doll told Judge Steven Vecchio that he reassigned the petition to vacate Stockton&#8217;s probation in a 2008 felony forgery case to himself; he also said he will assist in Stockton&#8217;s defense of murder charges in the death of a newborn girl. Assistant Public Defender Susan Kalbantner will serve as Stockton&#8217;s lead attorney. Doll declined to comment on the charges against Stockton.

Tuesday: Forensic experts will examine the remains of two infant skeletons found last week in the trunk of Stockton&#8217;s car, which had been in a police impound lot since last summer. Stockton has not been charged in the deaths of the two infants, whose age and gender are unknown. The forensic exam, which could last until Wednesday, should shed light on how many bones were found and whether the babies suffered any trauma before their deaths. DNA evidence will be collected. Gender, ages and whether the children were born alive may not be known for several weeks.

Sept. 3: Stockton is scheduled to appear on the murder charges and the petition to vacate her probation.
