TOLLAND - New evidence has led Massachusetts and Connecticut investigators to the capital district of New York state to try to solve a pair of 14-year-old homicides, including one that may have taken place here.
The woman whose body was found dumped in Tolland State Forest here on Oct. 6, 1995, might have lived in the Albany, N.Y. area, or at least spent time there, it was revealed on Tuesday at a press conference held at the New York State Police Academy in Albany.
Investigators recently were able to trace the sweatshirt worn by the slain woman to a company in New York's capital district, and sold only at three stores: one in Schenectady, one in the Northway Mall in Colonie, and the other at the Wilton Mall in Saratoga Springs, according to Massachusetts State Police Captain Peter J. Higgins.
Investigators took their case to New York for the press conference with apparent hopes of identifying the victims. Higgins said that it is likely there are family or friends of the victims in the Albany area who have not yet been made aware of the murders and investigations because they were centered in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
"Identifying the parties is such a crucial thing," he said. The new focus on Albany could finally lead to identification, which would be "a good starting point," the captain said.
