I wasn't sure where to put this lady. I know she isn't truly unidentified, but, she isn't missing either. Sorry if I put this in the wrong place.

Salt Lake City police are sharing Zhilong Diane Xie's driver license photo to find anyone who may have known her. Xie died after falling out of a University of Utah shuttle bus.

In more than 30 years of police work, Scott Folsom has seen few people leave as faint a personal footprint on the world as Zhilong Xie.

After the 63-year-old former University of Utah research professor fell out of a moving shuttle bus Thursday and died, it fell to campus Police Chief Folsom's department to notify her next of kin.

Except they couldn't find anyone who really knew the woman.
Not family. Not friends. Not co-workers. Not neighbors. In fact, the only calls to Xie's cell phone came from telemarketers.

Most of the same details as the first post.

1. She comes to this country in possibly 1988, when she was in her early 40's.
2. She has not worked since 2000.
3. She became a citizen in 2003.
4. She was at several other universities before this.
5. She had no next of kin listed on any documents.
6. She had no photos.
7. She was not well known to anyone.
8. The Chinese consulate could not trace her family.

Questions:
Tiananmen Square happened in 1989.
Maybe she was able to get out of China then and
was sponsored by the American government
or a U S citizen?
Maybe she was in a government witness program?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiananmen_Square_protests_of_1989

Something very different is going on, IMO.

Bank accounts? How did she pay for rent, utilities, food?
Did she have a steady monthly income from some source?
Or did she have thousands of dollars in the bank?

I would guess her fingerprints have been ran through databases.
Do the police have her alien registration number? Have they asked ICE if it was a legitimate one?

Where was she living when she became a citizen?

Did she speak fluent English? Did she speak the Chinese dialect from her city in China? Does anyone remember from those who did work with her in the past?

This is a mystery.

In reading over the wikipedia info about Tiananmen Square,

I hope LE has checked with Amnesty International, the big news organization, New York TImes, etc and their Bejing reporters.

Maybe LE could ask or Chinese consulate could find out if
the local Chinese newspaper... Harban, China would run her photo
and the fact that she is deceased.

She was a research professor so that would ahve been her source of income no?

This sounds like one for Colleen Fitzpatrick. If anyone can find her family, Colleen can. LE should contact Colleen.

eta: edited to add, I see LE couldn't confirm if she was employed based on the first linked article.

1993 article.
Found by googling her name.

Found by googling her name.
And topix has this link:
http://www.chemistry.drexel.edu/People/friend/friend_personal/friend_personal.html
It says that Dr James Friend, shown as co author of her paper, was her PhD advisor.

http://www.lookupanyone.com/namelistings/diane-xie-1.html
This says she has 3 relatives in Utah and 1 in Missouri.

I do not know if this is correct or not.
Surely, the police have looked into this.

http://names.whitepages.com/Utah/last/Xie
This says there are 8 people in Utah with last name Xie.

The most recent MSM article I could find is dated February, 2010. As of that time no known next of kin were located.

I will ask the mods if this thread should be moved to the new unclaimed subforum.

spoke with investigators on your find.. Excellent work by the way.. Hope to get a update soon.. Thanks for your hard work. I am now digging for phone numbers for the investigator.

I wish the newspapers had gotten her place of birth right in the first place, it is Harbin not "Harban".

Can her info & picture be posted on the current threads asking Chinese speakers for help with the Elisa Lam case???
