Casey Anthony: Tot Mom play forces audience to watch itself
posted by halboedeker on December, 21 2009 8:38 AM

The New York Times today describes the play as “a mixed-media work with 10 actors in multiple roles” and adds that “a mirrored backdrop forces the audience to watch itself watching the media frenzy whipped up around the case of Caylee Anthony.”

“When I was negotiating for the rights and talking to the STC, I made it very clear we were doing the show for one run,” he told the paper. “We’re not taking it anywhere else and certainly not taking it to the States. I feel that you wouldn’t get a clean response to it in the States; the whole thing would be too colored by events.”

Soderbergh puts Grace in the dock
Clare Morgan

Soderbergh says he has been both fascinated and repelled by the case, but is most interested in the way such stories are told.

"That's one of the things I'm really attempting to do in the piece, to always be a reminder that there is a child involved in this. It's easy to get drawn into the complexity of the case and the legal questions and forget that there was a two-year-old at the centre of this," he says of Tot Mom, which has its first preview on Friday.

"Maybe that's why these cases [of child death] are so compelling for people, because it really is the ultimate transgression . . . But I'm really interested in this debate about how stories like this should be covered."

"I do have faith that when the trial starts and they get in that room, and those jurors are listening to the evidence, the seriousness of it and the stakes will be very, very apparent to them. I hope so, for everybody's sake," he says.

Tot Mom is at Wharf 1 from Friday. Steven Soderbergh is donating his fees to the US National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children and the Sydney Theatre Company will make no profit from the production.

US legal sensation to be played on a Sydney stage

The decision to stage a play based on a murder of a child Australians know little about appears to be partly an exercise in testing the waters of public opinion - as well as waiting for the next wave of publicity that will accompany the trial in Florida next year.

Unlike Australia, where contempt laws severely limit reporting beyond the official court process once a person is charged, Caylee's case became a nightly parade of colourful characters - even suspects - across the TV screens of the US.

True crime as a spectator sport
December 11, 2009

WEARING a straw Akubra hat, Essie Davis emerges from the Sydney Theatre Company rehearsal room looking slightly dazed, her eyes squinting in the bright afternoon sunlight. The actor gives every impression that being a part of director Steven Soderbergh's work-in-progress, Tot Mom, is as much a complicated jigsaw and balancing act as other parts of her life.

In the US, particularly Florida, the murder has generated vociferous debate and moral outrage, with some commentators and chatroom detectives calling for the death penalty. At least two websites are dedicated to the ins and outs of the case by providing site and aerial maps of where Caylee's remains were found, a wealth of forensic evidence, court documents and speculative assertions underscored by lynch-mob insensitivities. Some of it reads like a crude version of Shakespeare. There is no shortage of bloggers baying for blood or defensive pleas by the mother and family members on YouTube.

Almost inevitably, the disturbing, sad and enigmatic story at the root of Tot Mom makes her think of motherhood and the anguish and pain of losing a child.

Top crime stories of 2009
December 20, 3:56 PM
<snipped>
2009 has shocked the United States with some disturbing crime stories such as the murder of little Caylee Anthony, a 2-year-old girl from Orlando Florida allegedly murdered by her own mother Casey Anthony. Anthony waited a month to report her child missing in the summer of 2008 and was charged with murder after evidence of decomposition and chlorform were found in the trunk of her car. The case against her grew stronger when a meter reader made a shocking discovery and found the skeletal remains of little Caylee, not far from the home she shared with her mother and grandparents. Now Casey Anthony is facing the death penalty for the murder of her child.

What will 2010 hold for these expolosive cases?

Find out tonight as The Levi Page show tackles these cases and reviews the top news stories of 2009 at 10 PM Eastern and 9 PM Central:

Will the Real Zenaida Gonzalez Please Stand Up!
Dec 20th, 2009 by Richard Hornsby.

So here I was watching Saturday Night Live (Google v. iPhone) when I noticed this post on the MarinadeDave blog: ALERT! Zenaida Myspace page logged into today!

And so look is exactly what I did and (Spoiler Alert) while I did not find any real Casey Anthony link, I think I may have found a real juicy Cindy Anthony conspiracy theory – shall I explain?

I did come across some righteous conspiracy angles regarding the issuing of traffic tickets to both Annie Downing and Zenaida Gonzalez on May 24, 2008… (cue mystery music)
