Tot Mom
Eat your heart out Hinch, THIS is trial by media

The subject of the title is Casey Anthony, a Florida woman who, at the time of her three-year-old daughter's disappearance, was just 23. Her daughter - the tot so beloved of headline writers - is, or as it transpires, was "little Caylee" whose gruesome skeletal remains were accidentally discovered, trussed up in a black plastic garbage bag, in swampy woodland, less than a mile from the family home. This much we know for sure because that's what's been investigated and reported by police and newspapers. What happens in Tot Mom, however, is astonishing - for an Australian audience - because Casey Anthony doesn't actually stand trial in a real court of law until late January 2010. Tot Mom is actually a trial by media.

Like Derryn Hinch, Grace is ostensibly for the victim all the way and to h*** with the law and due process. That the law is sometimes an *** we know, but better the *advertiser censored* you know and over which society has some jurisdiction than the vigilante you don't know and who is self-righteously beyond the law and the rest of us. That's the conclusion I reached anyway.

*Much more at link!

On 15 July, 2008, Americans awoke to the story of the mystery disappearance of two-year old Caylee Anthony from a Florida home. The investigation was intense, the news coverage a bombardment of possibilities, intrigue and overzealous news editors, none more so than the infamous Nancy Grace, a former celebrity lawyer known for her opinionated commentary on all things legal.

The tragedy escalated when the case turned into a homicide, one that police could not solve. Grace took the power of television to the end, creating a “justice for Caylee campaign” on her own show that is aired nightly on CNN. In a spine-chilling turn, Caylee's mother, Casey, was arrested for her murder. The family maintains her innocence to this day.

NBC blasted for checkbook journalism on David Goldman story — echoes of Casey Anthony coverage

The panel says it’s “appalled” because NBC News chartered a plane for Goldman and his son, Sean, to fly from Brazil to the United States. They were reunited after a five-year custody battle, and they arrived in Orlando on Christmas Eve. In paying for the plane, NBC News engaged in “checkbook journalism,” the Ethics Committee says.

Many viewers have been appalled by fees that TV news organizations have paid for photographs and footage in the Casey Anthony case. The networks say they are not paying for interviews by paying the fees. But many observers have been infuriated that the Anthony family seems to be profiting from the death of a child, 2-year-old Caylee Anthony.

The Goldman story is an uplifting one, but paying for access is still paying for news. When money changes hands, that gives the appearance of compromising the reporting.

There should be one standard in journalism. No matter if the story is happy or tragic, checkbook journalism is wrong.
