Croslin faces new drug charges
Posted: February 19, 2010 - 12:06am
<snipped>
As Misty Croslin stood before a judge in shackles and chains Thursday to face seven drug trafficking charges, a California bounty hunter was offering her a way out of jail in an exchange of information.

Before Croslin went to her arraignment, the bail that stood between her and freedom was about $1.3 million. In Sacramento, Calif., Thursday, bounty hunter Leonard Padilla said he was willing to pay a bond he estimated at $135,000 to get her out. The deal has a caveat. "It's got to bear fruit," he said. "It's got to lead me to HaLeigh." Fields said Padilla wants to question Croslin, then decide if he will arrange a bond. "If he likes the answers, he will bail her out," he said. "It's a license to interrogate."

In conversations with her parents, Croslin has asked that they maintain contact with Padilla, who came to southern Putnam County when HaLeigh disappeared. Fields said Croslin has changed her mind. "Hearing his [Padilla's] conditions she doesn't want to do it," he said.

Fields said he would be willing to accept help with her bail if the offer came with no strings attached. Padilla said he does not believe Croslin was asleep, as she said she was, when HaLeigh disappeared. "I'm not going to believe that," he said. Padilla said he also has been helping Croslin's parents and bought a 2001 Ford Taurus for her father, who is not working and says notoriety from HaLeigh's case has kept him from getting a job. Padilla said he also gave Hank Croslin money to meet expenses. "I don't believe she's told the cops what happened," Padilla said.

Investigators from HaLeigh's case stood in the back of the courtroom during the hearing.

Hope Sykes, 18, a co-defendant in the drug case, was also arraigned in the Putnam court on one count of trafficking. Cummings and co-defendants Hank Croslin Jr. and Donna Michelle Brock, 44, skipped arraignment hearings and instead filed written pleas of not guilty and asked for jury trials.

Misty Croslin's next Putnam County court appearance is March 31. Misty Croslin faces eight counts of trafficking in prescription drugs, including the single charge in St. Johns County. Her arraignment in that case is March 8.

Haleigh Cummings Update: Arraignments, Arrests and Bondings…Oh, My!
Posted: Thursday, 18 February 2010 8:33PM
<snipped>
It was supposed to be a day of court room formalities for Misty Croslin, Ronald Cummings and Hope Sykes as they had pleas of not guilty made on their behalf by their attorneys. Misty Croslin, Ronald Cummings, Tommy Croslin, Hope Sykes and Donna Brock were arrested on January 20, 2010 on drug trafficking charges.

It started out normal enough for this rather unusual situation as Croslin pleaded not guilty to all seven drug charges brought against her today in court. Her attorney, Robert Fields, requested a jury trial. A pretrial hearing is set for March. While Misty Croslin was being arraigned on her charges, her father Hank Croslin Jr. was in court dealing with his own charges of doctor shopping, but that was just the tip of the iceberg.

Misty Croslin's mother, Lisa Croslin, was arrested outside of court on an outstanding grand theft warrant from 2009, just hours before her daughter's appearance.
Lisa Croslins stay Thursay in the Putnam County Jail where she had been a guest once before on forgery charges was brief. That’s because millionaire bondsman-bounty hunter Leonard Padilla bailed her out shortly after 12 noon Thursday.

The cease-and-desist letter dated Feb. 17, 2010 says, "We have been informed that you have purchased a vehicle, cellular phones and other items for Hank and Lisa Croslin. Misty considers this action an unwanted, third-party contact intended to influence her parents to convince her to work with you." Padilla, who has not received the letter yet, confirmed that he had spent about $3,000 on a car for Hank Croslin Sr. and at least $200 on food and phone time for Misty or her family.

The letter went on to read: "Misty Croslin has made it clear to me that she does not desire your assistance in this matter. Therefore, she respectfully requests that you cease and desist any further attempts to contact her, either directly or by way of any third party."

Haleigh's, Somer's Families Get Support
Justice Coalition Gathers Local Families Of Victims Of Crime

POSTED: Thursday, February 18, 2010
UPDATED: 7:14 pm EST February 18, 2010

With a picture of her granddaughter sitting on a table, Marie Griffis wore her pain on her face. Her granddaughter, 6-year-old Satsuma girl Haleigh Cummings, has been missing for more than a year, and she still hasn't gotten the answer to this question: "She really was missing. All I could think was, 'Why? Why her?'" Griffis said.

The Justice Coalition gathered local families of victims of crime Thursday to offer their support. The families have similar stories and have at times been desperate for help.

Phillip Bowling, the grandfather of 7-year-old Somer Thompson, an Orange Park girl who went missing in October and was found dead in a landfill days later, spoke about his family's lowest moment: when he got the call his granddaughter was missing.

He and his wife, Debbie Bowling, talked to Channel 4 after Thursday's event, explaining the road hasn't gotten any easier since it was announced last week that a person of interest had been arrested in Somer's murder case. In fact, the Bowlings said when the news broke that 24-year-old Jarred Harrell was in custody, things got harder for their daughter and Somer's mom, Diena Thompson.

"She is not doing well," Debbie Bowling said. "The news was bittersweet. It's been very hard for her especially."

Phillip Bowling said the Justice Coalition will continue to be a source of support for the family because they're still a long way from any real closure.

Police: Secret video shows Ron and Misty selling drugs
Last Update: 2/18 11:59 pm
<snipped>
Misty Cummings is seen laughing as she negotiates a drug deal with an undercover detective. She doesn't appear to have any idea he's not a customer, but the police. "How you doing bud," she asks the man.

Several DVDs released by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office Thursday, show Misty and Ronald Cummings with the undercover detective. There were two cameras in the detective's car, one in the back and one in the front.

One night, Ronald is seen in the back seat of the car, telling the detective "$7 a piece, nine of them $63."

Another time, Misty is heard saying, "I'm scared. I don't want to be set up or nothing. I cannot get in trouble for nothing."

A few minutes after she said that, you can see Misty and Ronald trading paper bags with the undercover detective. Then, as Ronald gets out of the car, police pull up behind them. Misty says, "uh oh." Police yell back, "get on the ground."

Police say the tapes proved Misty ran the show in drug deal after drug deal. Investigators say she, Ronald and Misty's brother tried to sell prescription drugs to an undercover officer several times.

At one point on the undercover tapes, Ronald Cummings can be heard worrying about getting caught and people assuming that the drug deals were somehow connected to Haleigh.

The undercover videos were recorded inside a car over several days and Misty was in every last one of them. It finally came to an end when police moved in and took her into custody.

Both Croslin-Cummings and Ronald are in the Putnam County jail and, despite the tapes, both have pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking.

Investigators say they have received thousands of tips about Haleigh's disappearance, but are still no closer to finding her.

Undercover Tapes Reveal Cummings Drug Bust
February 19, 2010 5:41 AM
<snipped>
New tapes from the Putnam County Sheriff's Office show the key players surrounding the Haleigh Cummings disappearance, seemingly making drug deals with undercover officers.
Ronald Cummings and his ex-wife Misty Croslin pleaded not guilty in court on Thursday to a slew of drug trafficking charges.

But they may have a hard time fighting the allegations, because of a mound of evidence released by the Putnam County Sheriff's office. On numerous tapes, Croslin was seen explaining to an undercover deputy how the drug deals would work.

Cummings never implicated himself in his daughter's disappearance, however, and said "dope boys don't come get your kid like that".

Justice Coalition continues mission with fundraiser
02/19/2010
<snipped>
In what’s become its largest annual fundraiser, the Justice Coalition hosted more than 300 supporters Wednesday for its 8th Annual “Together We Can” campaign and breakfast — and the reasons behind the victims rights group were heard firsthand.

Attendees, including dozens of public safety, legal and government officials, heard three emotional stories behind how the organization assisted them in times of need.

Marie Griffis, grandmother of missing Haleigh Cummings; Phillip Bowling, grandfather of slain Somer Thompson; and Alexander Lemon, a teenager who turned his life around, all relayed stories of how Justice Coalition Executive Director Ann Dugger and her staff assisted them during their darkest hours to persevere through challenges brought upon by crime.

“They were there to help us,” said Griffis. “Without her (Ann Dugger), I wouldn’t have known what to do.”

In the tapes, Croslin talks about how drug exchanges will go down.

"You just leave the pills right there and I'll pick them up when I walk into the bathroom," Misty says on the tape that was recorded in an undercover cop car.

Also on the tape, Ron Cummings worries that if people find out he's involved with drugs they would assume a connection to the disappearance of his daughter Haleigh.

Within eight undercover drug deal videos released by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, investigators said Ronald and Misty Cummings are seen working together to sell prescription drugs.

Investigators said the undercover recordings led to the drug bust.

"Call me tomorrow," Misty said to an undercover officer in one of the videos.

"Call us tomorrow because I am suppose to come across 50 yellow Percocets and probably 50 or 60 more (inaudible)," Ronald tells the officer. "So just call me tomorrow and I'll tell you exactly what I can get."

"You gonna be with her tomorrow? Should I just call her phone?" the officer asked them.

"Yeah," they each replied.

Several times on the videos, Misty told the undercover officer how much she trusted him

Drug Sting Video Released Of Cummings, Croslin
Friday, February 19, 2010 9:52:59 PM
<snipped>
Authorities have released new video allegedly showing the father and former stepmother of Haleigh Cummings dealing drugs.

Croslin appears to only have one thing in mind -- getting out of jail.

"I will talk to him to get me out, and if my lawyer doesn't agree to, get me a new lawyer because my lawyer isn't doing anything,” Croslin said. “So just get me out of here and not revoke my bond, and let me stay with you guys."

Speaking with her father, Croslin talks about having bounty hunter Leonard Padilla post her bond.

Padilla has said he will step in to get Croslin out of jail because he thinks she has information about Haleigh.
