Casey Anthony's attorney fees are starting to add up!

More documents are expected this week in the case against Casey Anthony. As the case progresses her attorney fees are starting to add up. Her lawyers want taxpayers to help foot the bill.

Anthony’s defense team filed a motion to get the state to help pay the cost of her trial. They say money is needed for travel, serving subpoenas, hiring experts and more.

A judge will have the final say if taxpayer money will be used to cover part of her bill.

Casey Anthony’s defense team asked a judge Friday to declare her indigent, for some of the costs of her case. Orange County taxpayers would pay for part of the trial, if a judge accepts the motion.

Eyewitness News found out the fees for Anthony's attorneys would not be included in what taxpayers have to pay.

Since taxpayer dollars could be involved, the judge could question Anthony's attorneys about any possible book or movie deals that may be planned.

If Anthony does have money coming in from any such deals, she would be obligated to reimburse the county.

UPDATED: Date Set For Casey Anthony Murder Trial
Posted: 11:03 am EST March 8,2010
Updated: 7:08 pm EST March 8,2010
<snipped>
A trial date was set Monday in the case against Casey Anthony. In an order signed by Judge Stan Strickland, Casey’s trial has been set for May 9, 2011. Judge Strickland set a timeline for the issues that need to be addressed ahead of the trial, including depositions of expert witnesses, which need to be completed no later than September 30, 2010. The evidence must be reviewed by defense expert witnesses no later than October 31, 2010.

The judge pushed the trial back one week from where prosecutors had proposed for a start date and gave the defense a little more time than prosecutors had proposed to get their key work done in the murder case.

Casey's defense team hasn't even started deposing state experts. The judge extended the date by another month and also gave the defense experts another month to review the evidence against her.

Casey Anthony’s defense must also list all expert witnesses she intends to call, file motions related to the forensic evidence found, and reports prepared by expert witnesses no later than November 30, 2010.

The judge ordered that he will determine the time and, more importantly, the location of the trial in the future. The most likely scenario is that, if a jury is seated outside of Orange County, that jury would be brought to Orange County to hear the murder case, which would be cheaper than paying for all the parties and all the witnesses to travel outside of the county. Saving money is even more important, since the defense is asking for all of its costs to be paid for by county taxpayers.

WFTV doesn’t know how much she's paid New York defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden or former defense attorney Todd Macaluso of California. The defense says Casey has not gotten any more money since she was indicted for murder more than a year ago and that "all of Miss Anthony's resources are exhausted." Casey signed a document on March 2 saying she has no money, no assets and no anticipation of any coming in the future. Taxpayers may pick up the tab for the rest of her legal costs.

Prosecutors released two CDs of evidence to Casey's defense team, but they have not been made public. One includes about 300 pages of documents. The other is related to Joy Wray, a Seminole County woman who claimed to know information about the case.

Also this week, several Orange County detectives will be questioned by Casey's defense team.

UPDATED: Casey Anthony has $112,000 in legal fees . . . and a trial date
Casey Anthony’s attorneys have already spent more than $100,000; trial date set for May 2011

Casey Anthony has run up $112,000 in fees to two of her attorneys and is asking the state to declare her indigent so the state will have for her expenses, according to court filings made public Monday.

And the fees could only rise, because her case isn't scheduled to go on trial until May 2011. Orange Circuit Judge Stan Strickland set the trial date on Monday.

In an affidavit signed last week, Anthony estimated fees for defense attorney Andrea Lyon, a professor at DePaul University in Chicago who is renowned for her work in death-penalty cases, at $22,500. She said the fees for Kissimmee lawyer Jose Baez total $89,454.83.

Lyon represents Anthony pro bono and has not received any fees, the motion said. Lyon has incurred costs for transcripts, travel and investigation.

Other items recently filed the case:

• Prosecutors released two CDs of evidence to Casey Anthony's defense team. One CD includes about 300 pages of documents. Another CD is related to Joy Wray, a Seminole County woman who has claimed to know information about the case. The CDs are not yet public.

• Several Orange County Sheriff's Office investigators and deputies will be questioned under oath by Casey Anthony's defense this week.

• Orange County Circuit Judge Stan Strickland signed an order setting Casey Anthony's trial date for May 9, 2011.

Casey Anthony's Trial To Begin May 9, 2011

POSTED: Monday, March 8, 2010
UPDATED: 12:59 pm EST March 8, 2010

An Orange County judge has signed an order setting the date for Casey Anthony's murder trial to begin nearly three years after Caylee Anthony was last seen alive.

Orange County Circuit Judge Stan Strickland signed the order, which outlines a schedule for witness depositions and additional discovery, on Friday. The order said the trial will begin on May 9, 2011.

The order said the time and location of the trial will be determined at a later date.

On Friday, Anthony's defense requested that the court declare her indigent, which would put the costs of her defense on the shoulders of taxpayers. Strickland has not issued a response.

The motion asks the state to cover the cost of depositions, transcripts, investigators, legal research, expert witness fees, medical or mental examinations, travel expenses and other costs the defense has or will incur.

On Friday, Anthony's defense filed a motion for indigence, claiming prosecutors decision to seek death will require them to ask the state to pick up certain investigative and travel costs. Criminal defense attorney Richard Hornbsy said he has successfully applied to have clients declared indigent but said the process is strict.

"The taxpayers are going to be on the hook for Miss Anthony's due process cost, I have no doubt about that," Hornsby said.

The attorney said the Judicial Administrative Commission will have strict guidelines over what costs are picked up and what fees are paid. "There will be transparency with what she's paying, what she's doing," Hornsby said.

In order to be successfully declared indigent, Hornsby said Anthony's defense team will have to make full disclosure about how she managed to pay $111,000 in legal fees.

"The public has a right to know how the private attorneys were paid and what their interests are," Hornsby said.

Prosecutors will release more evidence on Wednesday in the case against Casey Anthony.

Her defense team wants a lot of the evidence against her thrown out. The team wants pictures, interviews and phone calls thrown out.

Numerous pictures have surfaced showing Casey Anthony partying with her friends. The defense is arguing that these pictures create a huge bias against Anthony.

Lawyers are also trying to convince the judge to exclude certain statements made by people involved in the case.

Her team says it’s unfair to the case, and a jury should never hear about it.

Casey Anthony: Setting of trial date is top news

Casey Anthony’s murder trial will start May 9, 2011, and that was a top story at noon today.

WFTV-Channel 9’s Kathi Belich noted that prosecutors had suggested the trial start a week earlier.

So WFTV anchor Vanessa Echols saw the later date as “a slight win for the defense.” Belich agreed.

Casey Anthony: Will we learn more about the defense money?

What about the mystery of Casey Anthony’s finances?

Answers are likely after the defense team moved to seek partial indigent status for her means. She is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee.

WESH-Channel 2’s Bob Kealing summed up the situation this afternoon: “Although she spent more than $100,000 on legal fees from some mystery source, Casey Anthony has filed new court papers saying that she’s broke and needs taxpayers’ help.” About $90,000 of that money went to defense attorney Jose Baez.

Orlando attorney Richard Hornsby, who provides legal analysis for WESH, described the indigent process as strict and said it will force transparency in the case.

“The public has a right to know how the private attorneys were paid,” Hornsby said. “At the hearing, they will say, ‘Judge, before you can declare her indigent, under the statute you have to make him [Baez] disclose the source of his funds,’ and so that is going to happen.”

Public defender Bob Wesley told WESH that indigency means full disclosure is required in the spending of state money.

“There will not be a whole lot of visibility until the process is over because otherwise you’d be disclosing what steps you’re taking to the presentation of your defense,” Wesley said.

Anthony Defense: Block Party Pics
Defense Says Photos Are Too Prejudicial For The Jury

Anthony's defense wants Judge Stan Strickland to bar the prosecution from showing a jury photos of Anthony drinking beer and partying during the month between Caylee's disappearance and when she was reported missing.

In the motion, the defense said photos of her partying while Caylee is missing are too prejudicial. The defense also argued that photos of Anthony partying prior to Caylee's disappearance are irrelevant.

The defense is also asking the judge to prevent a jury from hearing Anthony's mother's frantic calls to 911 reporting Caylee missing and from seeing certain witness statements made by Anthony's parents, friends and detectives.

In the 911 call made by Cindy Anthony, the grandmother tells a dispatcher she wants her daughter arrested. In the call, Cindy Anthony speculates that her daughter's car smells like a dead body. The defense argued that the comments are pure speculation and cannot be used in court.

Other comments made by Casey Anthony's parents characterize her as a liar and a thief. The defense said these items would make a jury prejudicial and deny Anthony the right to a fair trial.

It was revealed on Friday that Anthony has already paid her defense team more than $111,000, but it was not clear where that money came from. Anthony recently pleaded guilty to check fraud that occurred prior to her arrest on murder charges. In addition, her parents are facing foreclosure on their Orange County home.

Local 6 legal analyst Mark O'Mara said it is possible that Anthony used money from selling photos, videos or information while Caylee was missing. "Anything that she may have had that she ended up selling to media may well have been the source of the money," O'Mara said. O'Mara said it would not be illegal for Anthony to have profited from selling photos or videos while Caylee was still missing.

Strickland questioned defense attorney Jose Baez behind closed doors after the state questioned whether he stood to profit from any entertainment deals. At that time, the judge found that the defense, however it has been paid, has done nothing wrong.

Casey Anthony case: Defense wants party pictures of client barred from trial

This is one of three defense requests filed late Monday in the first-degree murder case against Casey Anthony, who is accused of killing her two-year-old daughter, Caylee.

Her attorneys argue the photos have caused a "hostile reaction" by the public, according to the motion.

"The issue in this case is whether or not Miss Anthony committed first-degree murder of her daughter," her attorneys Andrea Lyon and Jose Baez wrote in the motion. "These photographs add nothing to the resolution of that issue."

The defense also wants to keep several statements made by friends and family out of the trial. Many comments the defense considers to be what people heard about the crime and of prior wrong-doings by Casey Anthony.

Her legal team wants to keep out the 911 calls made by Casey Anthony's mother, Cindy Anthony, the day she reported Caylee missing. Cindy Anthony told a dispatcher that she found her daughter's car and it smells like there's been a "dead body" in it.

The defense's third request involves asking the judge to bar prosecutors at trial from eliciting "lay opinion" testimony about Casey Anthony's character or motives. Many witnesses have offered to testify to Casey Anthony's inability to tell the truth — a move the defense wants out.

Orange Circuit Court Stan Strickland has not ruled on the issues or set any hearings.
