The San Antonio Police Department has called off the landfill search for missing baby Gabriel Johnson after finding nothing related to the case, Chief William McManus said in a news conference Friday.

Officers had spent weeks combing the landfill for any sign of the missing 10-month-old boy, who was last seen with his mother, Valley resident Elizabeth Johnson, in San Antonio the day after Christmas.

The boy's father, Logan McQueary, has spent the last several months hunting for Gabriel, and throughout his search, he has maintained that his son is still alive. McQueary said he believes Gabriel might have been the victim of an illicit adoption.

search at a San Antonio landfill for clues in the case of a missing baby from Arizona has been called off.

During a news conference Friday, San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus said after searching 16 days through 4,600 tons of debris at the Tessman Landfill, the search didn't yield any clues that could lead law enforcement authorities to Gabriel Johnson, who was last seen in late December in San Antonio with his mother, who is jailed in Arizona.

McManus said that anyone with information on the baby is urged to call police.

No evidence was found.

In 16 days crews searched through 4,200 tons of trash looking for clues to the case.

SAPD Chief William McManus said it is a "bittersweet ending".

The baby's father, Logan McQuery, remains hopeful. His attorney said the results of the search were not unexpected. He said that sometimes a negative can actually be a positive, and it only strengthens their belief that the child is actually still alive.

Last Update: 1:35 pm
<snipped>
San Antonio Police Department Chief Bill McManus held a news conference Friday afternoon to discuss the latest developments in the case of missing baby Gabriel Johnson.

Chief McManus said investigators have completed their search of a Far East Side landfill. He told reporters that crews had searched through more than 4600 tons of trash over a period of 16 days and found no signs of Baby Gabriel. Chief McManus went on to say that both Missing Persons and Homicide officers were continuing to investigate.

Earlier this week, Elizabeth Johnson refused to go to court Tuesday for a hearing on two motions. The hearing has been rescheduled for March 17, and sheriff's deputies have been told to "use any means necessary" to get her there.

Landfill search for baby yields nothing
March 12, 2010 - 1:14PM
<snipped>
Logan McQueary, the boy’s father, said in a statement released by his attorney on Friday that he and his family are relieved, and that he is not surprised no remains of the baby were found in the landfill.

“I have always believed and continue to believe that my son is alive,” McQueary said in the statement. “Someone besides Elizabeth Johnson knows where he is at.” McQueary also said in the statement, “The search will continue until my son is home. We again wish to thank all of those who provided assistance.”

Authorities began searching a section of the Tessman Road landfill in San Antonio on Feb. 9, a month after they were informed by Tempe police of the case.

It was not immediately known what San Antonio police will do next in the missing persons investigation it is conducting parallel to a homicide investigation. Authorities have said they do not know whether the child is alive or dead.

Johnson is scheduled to appear for a pretrial conference in Maricopa County Superior Court on Wednesday.

Police call off search for Baby Gabriel

<snipped>
San Antonio police called off the landfill search for the remains of 8-month-old Gabriel Johnson after finding no evidence of foul play, Police Chief William McManus said at a press conference Friday afternoon.

“The good news is, we have no homicide at this point,” McManus said. “The bad news is, the case remains open.”

Law enforcement authorities, with the help of countless volunteers, searched through 4,260 tons of trash over 16 full days at the Tessman Road Landfill. But since the search began Feb. 9, authorities “found no evidence of a homicide,”[/] McManus said.

The case, which will remain active, is now being handled by the SAPD Missing Persons unit, McManus said.

Anyone with information about the case should call (800) THE-LOST (843-5678).

Texas landfill search for Tempe's baby Gabriel called off
Last Update: 2:12 pm
<snipped>
"This case leaves us with somewhat of a bittersweet conclusion," said San Antonio Police Chief William McManus. "The good news is we have no homicide at this point, the bad news is the case remains open." McManus said the 16 day search of the landfill produced no evidence in the case.

"This is, of course, a great relief to me and my family but honestly, it does not come as a surprise," said Gabriel's father Logan McQuearly. "I have always believed, and continue to believe, that my son is alive." McQueary says he will continue searching until his son is returned home. :prayer:

"It is frustrating and baffling," said McManus. "I can't figure out why she is not talking except for the obvious reason. It doesn't make sense to me. She claims she didn't kill the baby but yet is not giving up where it is."

McQueary released a statement expressing relief that no body had been found saying that he continues to believe that his son is alive.

A Facebook page dedicated to Gabriel Johnson has become an outlet for some to show their support and hold out hope that the baby boy is alive.

Anyone with information about Gabriel can call Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP or online at http://www.sacrimestoppers.com/

March 12, 2010 3:49 p.m. EST
<snipped>
After searching a landfill for clues into an 8-month-old boy's disappearance, investigators in Texas said Friday that they have discovered nothing that shows that the baby was killed.

"The good news is that we have no homicide at this point; the bad news is that the case remains open," he said.

McManus said the missing persons unit will continue to follow up on any leads and the homicide unit will investigate "any information indicating foul play."

He said authorities will meet in the coming days to determine their next step.
