An infant is the victim of a gruesome mutilation, and the suspect is her mother.

Troup County investigators have arrested a woman they say mutilated the genitals of her ten month old daughter.

35-year-old Melody Onyonyor, appears to have performed a type of female circumcision on her young child. Mann said, "At that point they notified Troup County Investigators and after that we had the infant taken to the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta where they checked the baby out to make sure everything was okay and to see if there were signs of female genital mutilation."

The baby was examined by a children's hospital in Atlanta where doctors determined that there had been some form of surgical removal of the baby's clitoris.

Mann told News Leader Nine the infant is otherwise healthy and is now out of Onyonyor's custody, "The child is with the father per the judge until the investigation is complete."

omg. what the.......
im gonna have a nervous breakdown if this keeps up

I got nothing. Last name Onyonor...not to make this racial, in any way. But is this okay in her culture? Is she herself mutilated?

If it was cruelty and nothing more, then hang her high. If it is a cultural belief and she has been taught to do this, then I will bite my tongue, no matter how much it disgusts me.

i disagree. the female mutilation isnt really tolerated in africa anymore, it shouldnt be tolerated her, least of all for an infant

and 'melody' doesnt exactly scream africn immigrant to me

Who said Africa? If she is a first generation immigrant from any of the areas that still accept it politically/culturally, then I can't speak much on it, regardless of personal feelings. I don't know yet...

Cultural belief!!!!!!!! When people come here yes they have a right to keep their cultural beliefs, but not when it comes to mutilating your baby in any way shape or form.We have laws here to protect baby's and what she did is horrible. She knew in the USA this is against the law that s why she DIY no doctor would want to be involved in this.Sorry but if she is mutilated herself to me that worse yet!:furious:Honor killings are a cultural belief to some should we turn our backs on those as well?:furious::furious::furious:

i said africa cause i've seen documentaries on female 'circumcision' there. and it's painful, essentialy its torture. and i dont condone it anywhere, least of all here

and she did this 'sugery' herself. how can you say that's ok? no sterile instruments, no doctor overseeing it.......cultural beliefs dont cut it here

I never said that it was okay. I never said that she should get away get with it. I'm sorry if that's how it was interpreted.

If this woman has lived here her whole life, raised up and integrated into American culture, with fluency and understanding of our laws and customs, then she has committed a heinous crime and she should be held accountable to the fullest extent of our laws.

If she has only been here a few months, and her cultural values are different from ours, and she has no fluency and understanding of U.S. law, then she has committed a heinous act and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of our laws. However, if she did it becuase she was taught that this is what you do with baby girls, then we go after the problem at it's source. Like with Uganda, which recently (and only recently) banned female circumcision.

Regardless of the reason, it's torture, I never said anything differently. And she should never have contact with that child again. But, there is a matter of intent and seeing the bigger picture. It doesn't change the outcome for this child, and it shouldn't affect the legal ramifications for the mother, but in some countries, it is socially acceptable, morally validated and religiously encouraged to cut off your daughters clitoris at home, or have the village doctor do it. If it's about the cultural encouragement, then I can't comment on the woman that did what she was taught. The procedure is heinous, and beyond imagination, but I can't villify the woman if she didn't know better that to do it.
All I'm doing is waiting for more info. Not excusing in any way. Just trying not to get blinded.

to me it's torture and its barbaric....and it considered so by many women in the countries where this is 'normal'.

Hey, like I said, just waiting for info. I still have my pitchfork. Perfectly ready to pick it back up.

After what Momtective posted, the chances are pretty good that I will need it.

omg. what the.......
im gonna have a nervous breakdown if this keeps up
i have spent most of my time here at ws on Haleigh & Caylee so i thought it was time for me to explore a little more and see what goes on in other threads. OMG! i have been upset since last night. i spent the better part of today with my two beautiful little redheaded granddaughters and the thought of somebody hurting them makes me want to throw up. i would not only hunt that person down like a dog, i would then escort them to he!! and happily stay there as well to make sure they suffered every second! how does anybody hurt a BABY!

This is a hot debate which everyone has a knee jerk reaction to. Growing up in the US or Europe, we see genital mutilation as abject physical abuse. In Africa and many other places around the world there are many Fundamentlists (note that word again) and traditionalists who believe that NOT having it performed on your daughter is abuse. Much much education has been done and the tide is turning in Africa, much like foot binding in Asia faded. But it will take time. According to statistics I read, over 92 million females bear the scars of this mutilation.

Let there be no mistake. This is genital mutilation. The clitoris is surgically removed so that the female child can never really achieve orgasm. Often the labia are sewn shut to ensure virginity and purity. A large number of girls who have lived through this horrid abuse at the hands of their beloved Mommas, Aunties, and grandmothers, go on to suffer infection and all sorts of sexual and reproductive difficulties. I've read that as it has become illegal, it has been forced to the back streets--no anesthesia, lack of hygiene, and performed by those mainly wanting to make money. The girls who were mutilated decades ago actually fared better as there were specialists.

But traditions die hard and most likely (we can't be sure yet) this mom thought she was repeating the same "necessary" practice on her daughter which was done to her. This surgery is known to increase the girl's "worth" as a bride. We all need to know about this practice:

One person who has done wonders in education is the gorgeous fashion model, Waris Dirie, who has gone public with her story in a book and movie "Desert Flower":

Until we get further information, we have no way of knowing if this mom was following her "culture" as I don't know if she is from Africa. Her name sounds East African to me and millions of Africans bear European first names. I have to say that I'm more than a little worried that the baby's father has been given custody as in many parts of Africa, it is the father or grandfather who begins the pressure to mutilate the female children. I pray that her father will protect her and that she will heal as best she can and be a survivor. It is so sad.

melody simmons? sounds more like east san fransisco

i dont celebrate diversity when it means a child is maimed for life

While the baby was in the temporary custody of her father, a relative of the father noticed that the baby appeared to have been circumcised. The infant was then taken to Children’s healthcare of Atlanta to be examined. Doctors then realized that the baby’s clitoris had been surgically removed.

At least her father does not seem to support the practice in any way, shape, or form. That's a relief.

ETA: I don't know why she was in the temporary care of the father to begin with, that wasn't stated anywhere that I could find.
