Shannan Gilbert's 23 Minute 911 Call

You wouldn't want her dead. You wouldn't want her in prostitution. There are a lot of things you wouldn't want. LE does this all the time when they play videos and 911 calls. I watch 48 Hrs TV show on a regular basis. The show does it all the time.

IMO, withholding the 911 tape is only good for LE and any suspects mentioned in the recording. MY BET: It is very valuable to LE to withhold the 911 recording.

Hawk, your determination is respected but this group of LE and politicians are hunkered down in their bunker...IMO, this is a MASSIVE ONION... but SCPD, LI and NY are merely one or two of the layers...The whole onion is likely OC.

Nothing to really do with anything about where the calls went into or if they should or shouldn't release the tape. But, I've been thinking about this lately. If I was SG or SG's family I don't think I would want the public to hear the tape.
Maybe out of respect for the ones who have passed we should let it rest. Yes, it would be interesting for us to hear but would it really be useful if it's not even useful to LE? Maybe it was drugs, maybe there was really someone trying to hurt her either way to me that is a very privet moment of fear, desperation and anxiety. I just don't think I would want my friends, family, or the public to hear me in that state of mind regardless of what put me in that state of mind. LE is as far as I would want it to go. But that's just me.

I agree to an extent. As curious as I am, I think it would be painful to the family hearing it repeatedly. I do, however, believe the family has a right to hear it.

That is only your assumption. Truth is, you have no proof which 911 center received her call. Keep in mind, she made the call from her cell phone (not a land line). Also keep in mind that she was on a barrier island (not the mainland). Her call could have been routed to Suffolk county dispatch only if the nearest cell tower for the cell phone carrier she subscribed to was located in Suffolk. It is entirely possible that the nearest tower for her cell carrier was actually located in Massapequa. If that is the case, then her call was initially answered by Nassau County.

It is details like this that are not being released to the public. It's okay to make assumptions. But pointing fingers at specific authorities based upon those assumptions does nothing to help solve this case. It's all white noise and the very reason why I cannot stand to read these discussions any more\ for more than a few minutes a month.

Do you have proof it didn't happen the way hawk imagines? :waitasec:

There's actually a couple articles I've read regarding the E911 system in Suffolk Co. I may have to go find them to PROVE that there is information out there regarding cell phone calls to 911 and how GPS is utilized.

...off to find proof...

Some cops helped save an injured owl along the side of the Long Island Expressway on Wednesday morning.

Responding to a 911 call, Suffolk County Police Officers Fred Sales and Carl Glaser found the owl near Exit 65 in the Farmingville area. The bird showed signs of trauma and had a dilated eye, police said.

This one describes who can get the 911 calls, what it can be used for (criminal prosecution), and how long the records go back in time:

Thanks for including that story. Maybe Chief Burke can write a letter to Newsday explaining the 911 call. While Burke is at it maybe he should ask the detective that wrote the letter I speak about to write another letter as to why he didn't solve the murder of Peter G back in 2003. Get too sticky, Jimmy?

The call could have been routed over to the State Police b/c she thought she was on Fire Island. That's my best guess.

I can't find the link but it was said that the call was transferred because she mentioned Jones Beach when she was asked where she was.

THANKS FOR THE INFO, MCME! Now we know what was really on the Tape - at least we know of ONE thing that is on the tape: 'she believed she was at Jones Beach'. No problem getting that one out there, right? And where is the other 22M55S of that tape. Maybe Det.Stephans can explain it for us.

Too painful for the family to hear? SG was a drug addicted prostitute. She dies while making a customer call. What could be more painful than that?

During my search, I came across the local legislation that talks about how 911 calls are handled. Basically, you make a call in the county and you get the POC (or some similar abbreviation that may have escaped my mind- and if you want the info a simple Google search will show) "point of contact" that rerouts the call based on geo location (from a cell phone: GPS, internet).

I know things couldn't get much worse. But ever think that maybe the killer is amongst us here at WS? Or when you think about the way he picked up the GB4 and how he used the internet. To me this tells me he likes to play around on line. Obviously has a lap top and can use wifi at any old coffee shop. I'm pretty sure he uses google just like anyone of us and looks at what he has done and what we have to say about it.
Anyways, point is I guess just to me personally if it were my child I would feel like the killer is winning if he could just go onto the internet and listen to a 911 tape of my daughter asking for help that never came. And this making it so that he could kill her. And then he got away with it. And then now he gets to sit home getting off on the fear in SG voice...think about it. Maybe it couldn't get any worse but there is no need to keep picking at someone's scab.

Not sure if this is helpful but where I use to live when you called 911 the calls actually went over to another state that was close and they had to call the sheriffs where we were at.
I'm pretty sure it's just whatever tower your picking up on and even just 20 feet could make all the difference

You really believe the DA cares about SG's family? What a hoot. I am not saying the 911 tape should be blasted over the Internet for public consumption. When you get a detective to write a letter to Newsday saying he heard the tape and he could find no evidence that SG believed she was in danger.....well, that opens the door to further inquiry.

This has been visited before but given the area she was in and available towers for certain carriers, this one should have been the relay. It is in Suffolk, so even if she said she was at Jones Beach - this tower should have told the 911 center otherwise. Unless she was not in Oak Beach when she called but was further west. Then its possible she hit the Gilgo tower (Sba Towers V LLC
West Gilgo Beach (Ny15393-a)
Babylon, NY).

No. I'm not talking about the DA. I talking more about the family or SG her self. IDK it's just how I personally feel about the 911 tape. We have different views on it. All well.
The one thing that does bother me and I think they should release is the tape the killer made to MB's sister. I am not saying release the whole tape just a few words so the public could hear his voice and maybe someone would recognize his voice and call him in. Now that might actually be useful.

Shannan Gilbert might have been saved if not for a confluence of events that occurred the morning she disappeared. Before she vanished, at 4:51 a.m., she made a chilling 911 call telling the operator that "there's someone after me, there's someone after me." When Shannan couldn't say exactly where she was, the operator transferred the call to the New York State police. Later, residents who heard Shannan screaming, also called 911. Those calls were handled by a local operator in Suffolk County, N.Y., who didn't know about Shannan's earlier panicked call. When local police arrived at Oak Beach, Shannan had vanished and they -- unaware she had reported her life in danger -- just assumed she had left the area and didn't do a thorough search. If they had, they might have found her and saved her life.

We will never know what really happened because SC won't release the tapes. Does anyone know of a definitive report issued as to exactly how the call was routed? Is there a GPS tracking system available to track a cell phone call to a location?
the call bounced off. Has SCPD issued a history of the call - which to
There is talk here about what ? towers wers it bounced off? What did the NYSP have to say on that alleged referred call?

How does the police commissioner come to a conclusion that SG was not the victim of a homicide when the ME hasn't established a C.O.D?

How is this even remotely possible at that juncture of the investigation? The question is WHY did he go public with such a ridiculous opinion without scientific evidence?

Did Dormer make that stupid statement BEFORE of AFTER he had lunch?

IDK. I guess I always just assumed that people like to involve their selfs into important situations just to be seen and heard.

I think that if the SCPD released the tape, there's a real possibility the killer could be caught and no relishing in his sick "accomplishment" would be had (at least not for long). JMHO

I recall something on the thread about Kolker's interview that a tape like that doesn't exist. ?
