The Lexington County Sheriff's Department along with state and federal authorities are searching for five missing children ages 1 through 8.

Investigators say they were first reported missing September 3rd and were last seen with their father, who is their primary guardian.

Deputies say the children's father is in custody in another state on an unrelated charge.

The FBI, Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and law enforcement officials from other states have issued an alert for five Lexington County children who have been reported missing by their mother.

"Detectives suspect foul play" in the disappearance of the children, ages 1 to 8, said Lexington County Sheriff’ Lewis McCartey...

Neighbors told Lexington county investigators that the father said he was moving out of state with the children. The children were not with him when he was stopped, McCarty said.

All five children live in a home near Lexington County with their father.

The children's mother, who is divorced from their father, reported the five children missing on Wednesday, September 3, telling deputies that she had been unable to contact her ex-husband...

Reports from Alabama media outlets say authorities are searching a rural area of Butler County, Alabama this afternoon, but investigators did not release specifics about why they are in the area.

This is confusing. I think the search for the children is happening in Alabama. Smith County MS and Greenville, MS (on the River) are not nearby each other. They are on opposite sides of the state. Smith Co MS wouldn't be long drive from Alabama (an hour, depending) but Greenville would be over two hours, maybe more. I'm quite familiar with both having grown up next door to Smith Co. Our local news has reported the Alabama search.

Does anyone have an age on Timothy Jones? I'm wondering if he is a native of Smith County, MS. I know that Jones is a common name everywhere, but there are a lot of Jones' in that area.

From your link:

WIS sister station WSFA has just confirmed with the Butler County Alabama Sheriff Kenny Hardin that the bodies were found around 5:00 p.m. in a rural area in Wilcox County, Alabama.

Yup, you're right, Quill. I guess I thought Greenville, MS, because Smith was arrested in Mississippi. LE must have had some kind of info to go on to find the kids so soon. They could have been anywhere.

It said in one of the links father toldn them approx wbere

I can understand why you would have thought Greenville, MS. MS shares many county and city names with nearby AL. It is easy to get wires crossed and it happens all the time. :)

I'm wondering right now, JMO and mind wandering, if Jones is a native of Smith Co. and had he come back home. I believe I read where he was stopped at a roadblock, so it's possible that he was passing through. But I am wondering, because there is not much reason to be there unless you live there, visiting someone or passing through. Again, JMO and wondering for my own (local-ish) curiosities.

The bodies of five South Carolina children who have been missing since September 3 were found Tuesday in a rural area of Wilcox County in Alabama, according to the sheriff of Butler County.

Sheriff Harden says the father told Mississippi authorities that he dumped the bodies on Highway 10 between Camden and Greenville.

Oh Lord. What could possibly happen in a father's mind to kill 5 children? I don't know how they died but I can't even imagine the terror these babies went through waiting for their turn to die? Prayers to the mother and the families. RIP little ones.

Sheriff Harden said the bodies were found off Highway 10 at mile marker 94 just outside the city of Camden. Multiple law enforcement agencies are on the scene...

Wilcox County District Attorney Michael Jackson tells WSFA that he believes the children were killed in South Carolina and confirms that the bodies will be taken back to Lexington County.

Jackson says he spoke to the district attorney in Lexington County and, due to the serious nature of this situation, they will handle all charges.
