Los Angeles police said Saturday hikers found what appears to be a human skull in Griffith Park.

Lt. Ryan Schatz said the two hikers stumbled upon the skull around 2 p.m. about 400 feet from the Brush Canyon trail near the Hollywood sign. He said the skull appeared to be several years old.

(...) The search for more bones and body parts is expected to continue Sunday and include cadaver dogs, according to KTLA.

Schatz said coroner and homicide investigators closed access to the area. Investigators are still determining how long the skull had been at the park or the person’s cause of death.

Wow, I was just reading about Jean Spangler the other day.

It's believed her remains may be somewhere in Griffith Park, since that's where some of her belongings were found, but a search on NAMUS/doenetwork etc didn't come up with anything in Griffith Park.

However, they are saying "a few years old." That doesn't sound like 60 +years: Jean disappeared in 1949...

I hope whoever it is is identified quickly, and whoever it is... Peace :rose:

eta: If this is Jean I don't know how they would be able to tell, no mention of DNA or dentals anywhere.

There are so many missing people from Los Angeles County alone, I don't even know where to start.

I would love to see Jean's case solved....

Thanks for the links carbuff: "may take more than a week to determine age and gender", /"cause of death will be determined later."

They must have some skills when all they have is an old skull from top to nose (no teeth.)

They'll be able to make a guess about the age by looking at the sutures in the skull, which don't close completely until around age 20 and continue to smooth out as we age. This article has more than you want to know about it (http://jaoa.org/article.aspx?articleid=2093179), and includes a picture illustrating skulls of different ages (http://jaoa.org/article.aspx?articleid=2093179).

It might well have evidence of a bullet hole or fracture.

If it includes the brow ridge, they can make a guess at the sex. There may be other identifiers that I'm not aware of.

I'm also not clear whether they only found that part of the skull, or if the hikers only saw that part because it was buried up to the eyes.

Does anyone know any more on this skull found? Age,gender. How long it had been there. Please let me know ok?

There are a LOT of people who's last known whereabouts were in Griffith Park.

The only one I could find who's missing specifically from Griffith Park is the aforementioned Miss Spangler (http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/s/spangler_jean.html), but there are dozens listed as missing from Hollywood, Burbank, and Glendale. Also, there have been quite a number of hikers missing over the years, but it looks like most of them were eventually found.

Doenetwork lists 4 UID's found in Griffith Park.

eta: Not exactly on topic, but I found this rather interesting article about the ghost/curse legends at Griffith Park: http://www.weirdca.com/location.php?location=123 Some of the comments are interesting too.

It's so little to go on, but I assume that it was a smaller guy, possibly with somewhat delicate features if so many originally thought it was female.
