OH - Shawn Michael GRATE: 3 bodies found, Ashland/Madison, Sept 2016

Are we on 4 or 5?

1. Dana ????
2. Candace
3. Elizabeth
4. Stacey

Is that right? Is there another?

Authorities are still trying to identify the first alleged victim of Shawn Grate, the suspected Ohio serial killer who is charged with killing two women and a suspect in two more murders.

Bailey believes Doe may be from out of the country. He tells PEOPLE he is currently working with another agency following a new lead. He could not comment further on the lead, citing the ongoing investigation.

“It’s to a personal level of wanting to bring this girl home,” Bailey says. “She was found on a road called Victory Road so internally the guys here are calling her ‘Vicky.’ It puts a name to a face, and even after all these years, every time we get a lead we still get a little excited.”

Insanity. I don't think that's going to happen. I sure hope not?! I live in Southern Ohio, not an expert in anything, really. It is my opinion tho, this fellow may have an issue. First he's not a man. A real man would not do this. Does he think he's special?
But it isn't very often you see the insanity defense fly in Ohio. Especially with a public defender, which I assume is what he has. We got the death penalty here too.
I think they are going this route is because if this goes to trial there is no way he's gonna squirm out of it.
This is only my opinion, am anxious to hear others opinions on this one.

Wow, I've just finished reading this thread after binging TKS (hello holiday days off :seeya::seeya::seeya:)
I cannot believe how this story has been developing...

Am I right in assuming that no recent information has come out due to the gag order? I've search for updates on RL but can't find any

Lindsay Bogan's remains were found in a Madison Twp field in July of this year.

The body of Rebekah Leicy was found in an Ashland, Ohio field in March 2015.

I'm not suggesting the incidents are related. There's a lot of criminal activity involving drugs and human trafficking in the Cleveland to Madison region. So it's a long shot, but worth noting just the same.

ETA: :cya: Thanks, Eucalyptuz. Nice to be back. :)
Although in mileage it doesn't seem far, this area and Cleveland are night and day. They are almost completely different worlds. This being the case, I don't think the likelihood of one person stalking all of this area is very good. The prey and process would be much different. IMO

Unless he's playing stupid with the interviewer, there's definitely something wrong with him. Oh wait, he's a serial killer -- of course there's something wrong with him!

I didn't have time to go through this whole thread but I read up on him and...all of his 'excuses' for killing are just that. The most likely answer is that he enjoyed holding these women captive and killing them. The fact that he had a girlfriend who described him as " charming and handsome in the early part of their relationship soon turned into a man she described as controlling and possessive. His behavior grew more sinister and abusive." (source)

IMO, there's a slim to none chance of him getting away with an insanity defense. I guess we will have to wait for the trial -- if there even is one. He has basically confessed to killing these women.

I live in a suburb around Cleveland and honestly, I am surprised there aren't more serial killers around the NE Ohio area. With the amount of drug use, poverty, and desperation many women feel like they have no other way out except through prostitution. I'm sure the reason they haven't found more slime bags like Anthony Sowell and Ariel Castro is that the majority of these women become addicted to drugs and police... well, they have their own agendas around here.

I could go on and on about how they are doing nothing to improve conditions in Cleveland -- things were getting better for a while but now there's talk of bills being passed where money would be taken away from clinics that provide treatment to addicts and the mentally ill because it is needed elsewhere. I heard it on NPR, I could do more research but I'm getting way off track here.

Kinda spitballing here, but could this be the unidentified victim Grate claimed he killed?

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/c/cunningham_lynn.html

She was just added to NamUs yesterday, so I don't know how recently she was reported missing.

I'd be more inclined to think she was a possible victim of THIS guy because it was the same truck stop he was arrested at:

But, I wouldn't say out of the question on Grate. Ashland is not far from that truck stop either.

Wasn't he in prison when she disappeared? If I recall correctly, Rembert was spent six years in prison after he was convicted of manslaughter in 1997.

30 minutes to Ashland from the truckstop and 1.5 hours to Marion, Ohio from the truckstop.

7/8/98 he was sentenced to six years with credit for 130 days. Assuming that he did all the time with no early release by the Department of Corrections, you are correct.

If this report is correct, he served the full six years. But it's still close timing.
