Penn State fraternity and 18 of its members are charged in student's death

A Penn State University fraternity pledge had toxic levels of alcohol in his body and was badly injured in a series of falls, authorities said Friday in announcing criminal charges for his death against 18 members of the organization and the fraternity itself.

The grand jury said the fraternity was heavily stocked with booze for the Feb. 2 ceremony at which Piazza, a sophomore engineering student, and 13 others accepted pledge bids. The pledges were pressured to run a "gauntlet" of drinking stations that required them to chug vodka, shotgun beers and drink wine, according to the grand jury.

Piazza fell down a long set of steps that night, and fell several other times, injuring his head, Miller said. The next morning he fell down the same steps a second time, and was unconscious when help was finally summoned. Piazza, from Lebanon, N.J., died Feb. 4 at Hershey Medical Center.

When a fraternity brother insisted Piazza needed medical help, he was confronted and shoved into a wall, the report said. When the same brother insisted again that Piazza required help, he was told others were biology and kinesiology majors so his opinion wasn't as valuable as theirs, the jury said.

The eight defendants facing more serious charges were scheduled to appear before a judge later Friday to be arraigned and have bail set. That will occur for the other defendants next week, Miller said. Five of them face only a single count each of evidence tampering

‘Heart-wrenching and incomprehensible’: 18 fraternity members charged in Penn State hazing death

Eighteen fraternity members were charged in the death of a 19-year-old Pennsylvania State University student who fell multiple times after consuming toxic levels of alcohol — and whose own friends failed to get help for him for many hours, authorities said.

Eight of the fraternity brothers were charged with involuntary manslaughter, as was the chapter, and other charges included hazing, aggravated and simple assault, alcohol-related violations and evidence tampering. The investigation benefited from video evidence from surveillance cameras inside the fraternity’s house, which is privately owned and off campus.

The grand jury’s presentment describes pledges forced through a gauntlet of drinking stations at the party that night, at which they were ordered to quickly drink vodka, shotgun a beer, and so on. It described videotape of Piazza being helped staggering, hunched over, to a couch and later trying unsuccessfully to open the front door, then “severely staggering” in the direction of the basement steps.

A nightmare. I can't even imagine what this young man was thinking in the hours before his death--staggering and trying to leave, did he know he was in trouble? My heart aches for his family.

Proof that turning 18 doesn't automatically make a person a responsible adult.

I am sorry for the deceased, for the fraternity member who tried to help, and even for the others, whose extremely poor choices and judgment have forever tainted their lives.

May the family find comfort and justice and may the young man who tragically and senselessly lost his life rest in peace.

Murder charges need to be brought. I cannot even fathom the cruelty of those who could have prevented this death yet chose not to.

Universities need to be sued because they are affiliated and they have the power and money to help prevent some of these hazings.

Should fraternities be banned? In my opinion, yes if it can save one person's life - yes !

This case saddens my heart.

Sending prayers of love and comfort to his loved ones and also the person who tried to save him.

These guys better not get out of this! I'll be so angry if they don't get time in prison!!

Timothy Piazza, during a hazing ended up with .40 blood alcohol in his system.

As the article states "He fell down the stairs at a fraternity and for nearly 12 hours no one called for help".

One person tried:

"When a fraternity brother insisted Piazza needed medical help, he was confronted and shoved into a wall, the report said. I couldn't finish reading this article.

The person(s) who chose not to save Timothy's life need to be charged with murder. This may be my own opinion but I'm sure I'm not alone!

Rest in Peace Timothy.

You're not alone. Almost HALF of of his blood was alcohol, if I'm understanding correctly. And these idiots were desperate to do whatever they could NOT to call for help! This is such a tragedy.

BBM - ITA.....such unbelievable cruelty. I just don't understand how anyone or any group can do this to anyone else. It makes me sick to my stomach.

Sickening - IMHO fraternities/sororities need to be done away with. College academic clubs are fine and not exclusive, do not involve hazing, either.

The worst part is if these young men are charged with murder that will follow them for the rest of their lives.

Not a good thing for one's college career.

Hi Blondie in Spokane,

That is how I felt as well - sick to my stomach.

I couldn't finish reading the article because the cruelty and indifference to another human being was beyond.

Had this "fraternity leader" been of adult age, he would be sitting in jail right now, charged with murder and facing a very bleak outlook.

This 'fraternity' person who apparently was the leader needs to be charged. Others who didn't speak up to help or at least phone an ambulance/police at a different location should also be charged.

Or, were they told they had to stay overnight in the "fraternity" house while waiting for one of the students to die. They were all aware of his falling on his face on the bathroom floor. Did not one of them even attempt to contact outside help? A quick call to 911 while in the bathroom or bedroom?

Oh I pray to God that these young men confess because a court trial will be almost intolerable for Timothy's parents.

Sending prayers out to them.

Thank you so much for all of the information, Richrd. (Post #113)

I looked at all of the charges and I am impressed at the number of them.

Along with all of you, I will follow this case.

So heartbreaking for the family. I can't even imagine.
