Cassandra Sainsbury, 22, is being held at El Buen Pastor Women's prison in Bogota after she was arrested on April 12 at the city's international airport for carrying 18 different packages of cocaine.

Cassie Sainsbury was popular, but a flake, says brothel receptionist

A FORMER Club 220 receptionist has dismissed recent stories that Cassie Sainsbury was a sad, “tubby” failure at the brothel, claiming she was “extremely popular” with clients.

Suzie*, who answered the phones for the umbrella company that takes bookings for Club 220, told news.com.au the other, older escorts envied the young South Australian because she was treated like a star.

......
Her comments come after sex workers spoke about the alleged drug smuggler, who was found with 5.8 kilograms of cocaine in her luggage at Bogota’s El Dorado airport.
They claimed Sainsbury told them she had cancer and her mother was dead to gain financial advantage. But Suzie said she didn’t know anything about the claims and had never heard Sainsbury claim to have a serious illness.

I'll be surprised if Cassie has a prison sentence longer than a year, this is Colombia after all, ruled by drugs and corruption. JMO

Yeah, but don't you get sentenced a jail time by the country you were trying to smuggle the coke to? Say sweeden where youl get 2-5 but America you could get 10-20? Just a rough example btw..

Not that I am aware it's the country your found in. No Aussie I know caught overseas has been sentenced by Australian laws. It's always where they have been caught.
The first link posted is interesting in what appears the variations they insinuate spending in jail depending on what you plead.

I found this interesting nothing major info wise but opinions regarding Columbia most likely NOT wanting big media attention . Which is vastly different to other places that appear to parade people in the wrong. I tried to find something about amounts etc but got lost searching it was over 5kg - I wonder if there is big difference in under or over in terms of charges as some other countries. Also IMO as this was a "tip" someone else walked through that airport that day safely with 3 times the amount :/

Okay I'll keep trying link sorry see next post for link

On that we agree!! Its usually a setup! As such a big load will have every customs official preoccupied, talking bout it, wanting to see ect.. and then the real load slips through!! That coke she has with her is probably only 10% coke !! The other mule has the 15kg of pure with him/her...
Crazy world.. even crazier people sometimes!! These guys dont care losing that amount...

Over 5kg is the much harsher sentence, so one less set of headphones, so to speak, and it wouldn't have been such a grim prospect she is facing.
I wish this thread had come earlier, so much catching up to do linkwise!

Apparently, Colombian officials make arrests every day of foreigners trying to take drugs out of the country.

Colombian police make multiple arrests daily for drug trafficking at major airports, and have sophisticated means for detecting illegal drugs in baggage or on your person.

Also ... (I mention this because I read yesterday that Cassie's fiance was classed as a POI by Colombian authorities, and had to speak with the AFP upon arrival back in Australia from his visit to see her in Colombia.)

Smaller amount of drugs are trafficked by air, in risky operations by “drug mules” who either swallow small amounts of drugs, or carry pounds or kilos of the illicit substance in their luggage. These drug mules generally work for Colombian organizations with a criminal partner organization in the destination country.

interesting theory but would someone really sacrifice the amount she was caught with? I think a much smaller amount would suffice for that purpose IMO

maybe that's an Aussie colloquialism but I'm not sure what that means?

Jumping on the back of South Aussie link above a lot apparently are caught. I just mainly meant it is enough to get authorities excited and attention caught up while perhaps someone else went though with larger amounts.

She was caught with Cocaine in headphones packages. I think South Aus meant 1 less package would have most likely been under 5kg :)

It seems the tip off came from the US DEA, who were alerted when Cassie's airline ticket was purchased by an 'unknown' source (who was probably known to the DEA imo).

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) tipped off Colombian authorities that Cassandra Sainsbury may be attempting to smuggle drugs out of the country, it has been alleged in new reports.
Sainsbury's last-minute flight to Colombia via London was allegedly purchased by an unknown source in Hong Kong, which raised a red flag with the DEA -- a senior American drug enforcement agency.

It is also interesting to note that the Colombian crime gangs may work with their law enforcement and port authorities.

In the cases of port cities, local crime gangs with close ties to local law enforcement and port authorities oversee the loading of the drugs into containers, often in coordination with international drug trafficking cartels.

One important criminal organization running such operation is “La Empresa,” a local mafia that’s long been in charge of Colombia’s largest port, Buenaventura.

wonder how much they promised her ...

I can't understand how any amount would make the risk worth it but that's just me
