Sharron Phillips went missing in May, 1986. Today, more than 30 years later, police named Raymond Mulvihill as the man who killed her.

“I’ve briefed the coroner on the investigation. We will be forwarding a report in due course. As such I will not be discussing the evidence against Mulvihill today.

“We will continue to investigate the possibility that any other person has assisted Mulvihill in this offence, or has provided him with assistance after the offence.

“I urge anyone with any information on Raymond Peter Mulvihill or the Ascot taxi to contact Crime Stoppers.

“Investigators would also like to speak to former residents, neighbours of Mulvihill who resided at Russell Dr, Redbank Plains, in particular a neighbour by the name of Jim.

“And I will stress that Jim is not a person of interest in this investigation.

Police began investigating this fresh lead after a person came forward last year with new information. 9NEWS understands that person to be the taxi driver's son, who told us last year that he believes his late father was responsible for Phillips' murder.

9NEWS understands the man's son came to pick up his father that night after he had dropped of his taxi. He claims his father demanded his car - a brown and white HK Holden Sedan - and he heard two boots closing at the rear of the property. When he jumped in the car with his father he claims to have heard banging in the boot.
Days later, the son found a woman's pair of shoes and a handbag in the boot of his car.

Detectives will continue to investigate if anyone else was involved in Phillips' murder.

Investigators now want to speak to anyone who knew Mulvihill or knew his taxi.

OMG! I thought this day would never come! So pleased for the family to get some kind of closure (and for those wrongly accused/suspected), but heartbroken that they may never have Sharron returned to them. Like many who have driven past her sign, wondered what happened for so long, I'm just grateful his son came forward. I wish he had come forward sooner but I guess he had his reasons. RIP Sharron, you have been in many people's thoughts for many many years, and will continue to be until you are brought home.

“Firstly, this changes nothing; it can’t bring back Sharron or my parents and it can’t take away the pain and heartache that we all suffered for the past 31 years.

“Secondly, Raymond Mulvihill might have been the one who murdered Sharron but it was his son, Ian, who had countless opportunities to contact the police and didn’t. I don’t care how many times your father threatened you.

“If you had reported him the day after he took my sister, you could have saved so many people’s lives according to the statement you made to The Courier-Mail, but instead you did nothing.”

‘"It was like growing up in the eye of a tornado," Sharron Phillips' sister Merlesa reflects, more than 30 years on.

"Imagine the worst possible thing ever happening to you and your family, and then it being dug up every few years."

That is how Merlesa Phillips describes being at the centre of one of Queensland's most infamous cold cases — the disappearance and murder of her sister Sharron Phillips in May 1986.

When 20-year-old Sharron went missing from Wacol, south-west of Brisbane, after running out of petrol 10 kilometres from their family home, Merlesa was just 14.

"I remember sitting at the kitchen table with my mum and my dad and them reporting to the police that Sharon had gone missing and they couldn't find her," she said.

It was that scenario that Merlesa Phillips describes as the moment her childhood came to an end.’
