Cridlin: Tom Petty was the scruffy Florida boy who helped us feel

Tuesday, October 3, 2017 12:44am

For all the losers who got lucky in life, all the scruffy and spindly overachievers who believed in their heart that three chords and the right line could win over the American girl next door, there was Tom Petty.

He was the one who wouldn't back down, who chased that dream into the great wide open, and held it up high with a shaggy, cockeyed smile. He led his band of Heartbreakers from a swampy college town to international fame as one of the longest-running, most successful rock bands in history. He was the boy who grew up crazy about Elvis, and who wound up peers with Bob Dylan and the Beatles.

And on top of all that, Tom Petty was the most beloved, influential and popular musician ever to come out of Florida.

I like that folks I disagree with elsewhere on WS are able to come together for tributes like this one. We all know good music when we hear it/feel it. =)

And TP liked to bring people together, he said so himself.

Bbm: yeah, I like that, too! :blowkiss:

Lots of great YouTube videos of Petty's songs, here is one of my (many) favorites:

GAINESVILLE — Gainesville's No. 1 son.
That's what Tom Petty is to his hometown, and now he's been memorialized on one of its most iconic walls.

The cause of Tom Petty‘s sudden death is still under investigation.
The Los Angeles County coroner’s office completed an autopsy on the late singer Tuesday, but the cause of death will require further examination, department spokesman Ed Winter told the*Associated Press.*According to the outlet, Petty had not seen a doctor in six months, no foul play is expected and toxicology results may take weeks to surface.
The rock icon was 66 when he died Monday after suffering cardiac arrest.

Hmmmm. Most forms of heart disease show up upon autopsy. Oh, I am so hoping this was not a drug related death.

I heard this morning on a TV tribute that Tom had a fractured hip but would not put off his tour, even though he was having a lot of pain. I follow him on twitter and found it interesting that he had to reschedule 2 Cali dates at the end of the tour due to bronchitis and laryngitis. The band’s tweets were very apologetic as though this was an unheard of event, and the dates were rescheduled ASAP. Maybe he had underlying cardiac symptoms? Idk, but I think you have to pass a physical for insurance purposes for a tour, so he must have been checked out earlier this year or end of ‘16.

I wish I had not listened to the 911 call. Having had a family member suffer a heart attack, you know that “time is of the essence.” There’s no point in wondering whether anything would have made a difference. But his death is gut wrenching to me for some reason. I’m so pissed off that he’s gone so soon. And my heart breaks for his family and friends. He’s known some of the band members over half a century. They must be hurting so much.

The Gators (U of FL for you non-gators) did a tribute yesterday, the whole stadium singing “I Won’t Back Down.” It was really emotional and I’m crying just thinking about it.

Dammit.

My favorite well one of them...

The MOJO tour was incredible. So so so so awesome. I covered live music for about a decade, and have seen hundreds of bands perform in my lifetime. He was one of the best. Top five, of not top 3. Saw him again in earlier this year with my dad and brother. His music is part of the fabric of rock and roll. I know his influence on music lives on — I see and hear it every day. It's tangible. But he's gone. The man who created it all, for decades, and lived with us through our lives, is gone. It's almost like losing a friend. It's like losing a part of myself. There's his music and his legacy, but there's a shadow left where his humanity lived within ours.

That's cheesy. But it's what's on my mind this morning, and I miss him. I feel for the people close to him who lost even more. He's gone. [emoji853]

Who here has seen the "Sound City" documentary? Was listening to Petty's "Damn the Torpedos" and got to thinking about that studio and all the great music that came out of it, including several of Petty's greatest, imo.

Here's a Rolling Stone story about Sound Studio, with quotes from Petty, Butch Vig and John Fogerty.

List of Sound Studio recordings by year:

ETA: Petty's ties to Shelter Studios early in his career is interesting, too. Some of his Mudcrutch stuff was recorded with the help of Leon Russell. Those reel-to-reel tapes still exist somewhere. They need to be restored and digitized and donated to a museum, imo.

Here's a good story that touches on Petty and Shelter.

I watched Tom Petty on SNL in December 1979, heard the song "Refugee," went crazy. (14 years old) Spent the next few weeks begging my parents to let me go see him the following month at Tulsa's Old Lady on Brady. They said only if we go with you. So we all went. I was a fan from then on.

Bbm; Somehow with this icon, does it matter?
I suppose it does. But peeps like Tom Petty, their songs live on; beautiful songwriter, and man for the ages. Too many songs to mention, his was the real deal.

That face, those songs, there was no one quite like Tom Petty...

Bbm; There's something about the songwriters. I remember thinking Stevie Nicks was the luckiest woman ever to duet with this amazingly talented and beautiful man.

What a beautiful legacy he leaves for us all. There are so very few that write iconic music. Tom Petty soars high above the rest. God bless him.

This is lovely. Sometimes I think it is sad to adopt a song, and a giant like Tom Petty in these circumstances, after his passing, but no matter, I think he can hear it.

We feel it. Shouting it from the rooftops, and the stadium. It is beautiful.

Can’t stop thinking about TP, probably because my FB feed keeps showing pix of him, which, to quote “Breakdown,” ‘I don't mind.’

I also started reading his bio, but got too sad and had to put it down. Does anyone know what became of his first wife Jane? Is she still alive? Also, I wonder if he adopted his stepson. I hope he had all his affairs in order to avoid family conflicts.

I'm discovering songs I’ve never listened to before from albums in which I must have listened to only the hits. I’m blown away by some of them, and very grateful to have new (to me) TP stuff to listen to. ❤️

Has anyone heard when they will be holding a memorial service for Tom?

Tom Petty was laid to rest at the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine in Pacific Palisades, Calif. on Monday. According to the temple’s website, the grounds were closed on Monday.

The late musician’s family and friends paid tribute to him at the temple, shrine, and meditation garden, where George Harrison’s funeral was also held in 2001. Petty’s daughter shared photos of the ceremony to her Instagram account.
