From domestic battery to accusations of attempted murder: the criminal history of man accused of leaving baby in dumpster

Two days before his infant stepdaughter was found in an apartment complex's trash, Marquis Young was sentenced to six months of probation for battering the baby's mother, his wife.

Now, the infant is out of the hospital and in the state's custody while Young is accused of attempted murder.

Currently held in a nearby jail, Young, 27, of Lawrence, will face felony attempted first-degree murder and child abuse charges, police say.

The upcoming felony charges will not be Young's first. A review of his criminal history shows multiple offenses involving physical violence and destructive behavior.

The following is a brief summary of Young's criminal record, according to court documents filed in Johnson County District Court:

Man accused of putting infant stepdaughter in trash pleads to lesser felony charges, awaits sentencing

A Lawrence man accused of placing his infant stepdaughter in a trash compactor was convicted Monday of two lesser felony charges than the one he originally faced.

A single felony charge of attempted first-degree murder was filed against Marquis Young in July. On Monday prosecutors filed an amended complaint in Douglas County District Court, charging Young with one felony count each of aggravated battery and abuse of a child. He pleaded no contest to the two charges the same day, Jill Spurling, a trial assistant with the Douglas County District Attorney's Office, said in an emailed response to questions.
