Mistrial declared in Vader case on drug and gun charges
A mistrial has been declared in a case that saw Travis Vader convicted of eight drug and firearm-related convictions, after it was learned that full disclosure was not given to his defence.

Vader, 40, was convicted earlier this year of stealing a truck, possession of an illegal revolver and trafficking methamphetamines around the Barrhead area in June 2010. He was scheduled to be sentenced in September, before it came to light that two witness statements connected to the case has not been given to Vader’s defence lawyer.

At that time, Crown prosecutor Michelle Doyle said statements from two witnesses had indeed not been handed over.

Charges stayed against Travis Vader in McCann double murder case

The case against Travis Vader for the killings of missing St. Albert, Alta., couple Lyle and Marie McCann crumbled Wednesday morning as Crown prosecutors stayed the murder charges six weeks before the trial.

A stay of proceedings means the Crown has a year to bring the charges back to court, if they choose. However, this rarely happens.

Lyle McCann, 78, and his wife, Marie, 77, were last seen on the morning of July 3, 2010, buying gas at a local station. Two days later, their motorhome was found engulfed in flames near a campground, but the bodies of the couple have never been found.

They were headed to B.C. to meet their daughter.

The phone used to ring almost non-stop. Thirty or more calls a day at first, people with tips and information, all wanting to help.

Some calls were from inmates, others from members of the public, or from psychics claiming to have had visions of what happened. Two people flew from the United States and spent days walking in the dense northern forest, convinced they knew where to find the bodies of Lyle and Marie McCann.

'This isn't over': Missing St. Albert couple's son Bret McCann

Last summer, Bret McCann was feeling positive and happy.

After meeting with RCMP and a Crown prosecutor, he was told the man — Travis Vader — accused of killing his elderly parents, will go straight to trial, skipping the six-week preliminary hearing that was scheduled to begin in the fall.

The two-week trial was drawing near, slated to begin April 28, but in a surprise move on Wednesday, Crown prosecutor Michelle Doyle directed a stay of proceedings just before a publication ban hearing was set to begin. A stay of proceedings is usually directed when there is not a reasonable likelihood of conviction, but the charges can be resurrected within one year.

Travis Vader claims malicious prosecution in McCann murder case

Travis Vader has launched a $1-million wrongful-prosecution lawsuit against more than four dozen RCMP officers, Crown prosecutors and jail guards.

In the lawsuit obtained by CBC News, Vader alleges a detailed history of legal and physical abuse that began within days of the disappearance of St. Albert seniors Lyle and Marie McCann in July 2010 and culminated in Vader being “maliciously” charged with their murders.

Travis Vader — once charged in missing McCanns' murder — denied bail

ravis Vader was denied bail on Friday.

The 42-year-old - who had first-degree murder charges stayed against him on March 19 in connection with the disappearance and presumed deaths of seniors Lyle and Marie McCann - had been seeking release on unrelated charges that he is facing a retrial on in September.

Justice David Gates denied Vader's application for judicial release. However, his reasons and the evidence heard during Monday's bail hearing fall under a court-ordered publication ban.

Outside court, chief Crown prosecutor Michelle Doyle said the next step would be the Sept. 8 retrial relating to a June 2010 incident near Barrhead for which Vader is accused of stealing a truck, possessing a stolen truck, and trafficking in methamphetamines.
