The police K-9 dogs were identified as Jimmy, a 7-year-old bloodhound, and Hector, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois.

K9 officer Nelson Enriquez arrived at his home in Davie early Wednesday after completing his midnight shift and apparently left the dogs inside his vehicle. Investigators say the officer found the dogs around 7 p.m.

WTF Are you kidding me? He has been a K9 handler for 7yrs did he black out? How did he get out of his cruiser and not let his dogs out to pee or never think to feed them or anything???? I am so freaking angry!! I hope they charge him. Though I won't hold my breath judging from the two listed in the first link and the few that happened last year.

Not the first time this has happened. As long as there is no accountability for police officers, it will continue to happen.

This is so sad. Looking at the pics of the pups was to much for me. I'll like to hear the officers story. How can he forget them, I just don't get it.

How odd that he forgot the dogs for almost 20 hours! Didn't he have a schedule he needed to follow with them? Didn't he have to walk them before going to bed? Upon rising in the morning?

I went to high school in the same town and I promise you it is very hot and humid this time of year. I imagine the dogs were dead within a couple of hours of sunrise, if not before.
 
I hope he faces charges, although we know it wouldn't be what non-cops would face...

You are right. I have heard of at least 5 deaths from neglect of LE K-9s. It is horrific and they should be charged, but to date...I haven't seen it happen.

This policeman left his partner in a pen on a cement slab in mid-July's summer heat in Oklahoma (which means it was probably in the 98-103 degree range). No dog pen should ever be on a cement slab in the summer. Ever stepped barefooted on hot cement?

“He entered his home sometime in the mid-to-late morning and left the dogs in the vehicle,” said Zogby. “He discovered sometime late afternoon, probably preparing for his next shift, he discovered what had happened. He discovered the dogs in his car, in his driveway. You can imagine his reaction at that point. Like I had said before, these are two beloved members of his family.”

Enriquez had worked a night shift that began at 11 p.m. Tuesday and ended about 7 a.m. Wednesday, when he continued working a few hours more to assist in the search for a missing older man.

At about 5 p.m., he discovered his K-9 partners were dead inside his Ford Explorer SUV. They may have been trapped for six hours.

Enriquez is married with two young children who were also very attached to the dogs that lived both inside the house, and if weather permitted, in outdoor kennels in the officer's yard, Zogby said.

This officer needs to be fired. Or never be allowed to be a K9 cop ever again. No excuse.
 
You notice "beloved members of your family" missing within a short time.
It's one thing to forget a dog or kid in the car while you are at work and wouldn't expect them there.

However, while you are at home?
The dog or kid should be pretty visible in your life.
If I don't see a dog or kid for about an hour I go looking for them...
(My kids are 11 and 12!)

I have some sympathy for the parents who forget they are supposed to drop off the baby.
But this? This was at home... when he should have been interacting with the dogs anyway.
There is no excuse for forgetting a kid or dog for hours AT HOME... when they should be with you. :twocents:

I am sorry, but who leaves "beloved members of his family" in a hot SUV for hours to die? What could he possibly be so preoccupied with that he forgot they were in the SUV? There is no excuse for such negligence.

I agree, it probably wouldn't be the charge. This was just my suggestion on what I would like to have happen to him being that these are trained K-9 officers under his care.

My impression was that killing a K9 officer was basically the same thing as killing a human officer.
I'm sure it varies by state.

He works night shift and he worked a longer shift than usual that night so I imagine he was pretty tired. I think that contributed to it. I would never be able to forgive myself.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but the fact is there are 2 sets of rules, one for police officers and one for us. Their lives are evidently worth more than ours too, if you go by the penalty for killing a P.O. and a regular citizen.

(says michmi who was raped by a police officer who was never prosecuted or disciplined in the remote past)
