More than one active serial killer in Florida?

While I think it's great that this thread was created, I think it will contribute to some wild speculation linking together murders in multiple cities. In any case, I have uncovered something today that is timely given your interest in taking another look at these cases.

I am a Volusia resident and followed the Daytona serial killings. Today, they searched a back yard in Port Orange and found a body buried in the yard of a man who is in jail. He is awaiting trial because he kidnapped and raped a 9-year-old girl at a neighborhood party.

Someone just posted info about him, and it appears that he once lived in Daytona Beach in close proximity to the locations where five different bodies were found. There is a thread on a missing Port Orange woman, Laurel Rogers. I'm going to review all of the Daytona killings to refresh my memory. Then I'm going to do some digging.

There is a chance that this man, James Maxwell, is being investigated for all of these killings. It's definitely worth a look.

I do understand the concern....and I thought about this sincerely.

While I truly hope there is not more than one active serial killer in Florida, the fact remains that there is at least one serial killer that is still out there. There was a tremendous amount of coverage of the Daytona Beach serial killings, and since it's not uncommon for a serial killer to hunt, kill and dump bodies elsewhere to avoid detection, I started tracking these homicides within the victimology presented in the Daytona Beach case. What I kept finding was somewhat astounding. A report or two about these individuals and then nothing. Local LE departments are finding some of these women, confirming they were murdered and then that's it in the media.

I have traveled Florida and know how it is set up - you can move into another county quickly and without detection - so my theory, that I'm hoping is sincerely wrong, is that perhaps, and I say perhaps with emphasis, the DBSK started killing and dumping in close proximity - you know, one kill in this county, another kill in another....the drive to kill doesn't go away - so, this is how and why I started tracking these victims of homicide.

Is it possible none of these deaths are related? Absolutely. Due to that very real possibility, and since I've been researching this for several years, I admit I may have tunnel vision - so any feedback is welcome.

Thanks also for the information on the body found today - I'll look into it and the person in jail you referenced.

Did you put that together in a single day?

It took me a few hours. I learned from the Bond crew during Caylee's case where we mapped all the cell phone pings for every single day of phone records. I'm going back to correct the items you mentioned above. I moved Julie's location and corrected Iwana's spelling. Thanks for pointing these out. Do you think I have July in the right spot now? I seem to remember one of the articles referenced "near a hunting club" but I googled and couldn't find reference to one.

That map is incredible. But it looks like someone had trouble finding the exact location of Julie Green's body. I read that it was found off LPGA Boulevard near Bayberry subdivision. I did my own map, and it's nowhere near as detailed and helpful. But, according to my little map, Julie Green was found west-south-west of where Iwana Patton was found. By the way, the mapmaker has Isana instead of Iwana. If you want, you can add 1225 Kennedy Road to your map. I still need to confirm it, but I believe that is a former location for James Maxwell.

OK I added both the Kennedy Road address as well as the Brandy Hills Drive location listed in articles about the body find and rape. It would be nice to know his exact release date as these are both in very close proximity to several of the girls' locations.

According to this link, James Maxwell may have had work release since it was near the end of his sentence. But he wouldn't have been living near the dump sites. So it makes it fairly improbable that he was involved in any of those incidents.

Some comments here state he only served 1 1/2 years of a nine year sentence. Comments and rumor of course...

This is about his current girlfriend... links to prostitution.

Leslie Bertram said her daughter -- who has been arrested at least 10 times since 1995 according to court records and has a 3-month-old child with Maxwell -- told her that the only thing she had left was her freedom and "I'm not going to lose my freedom over him."

When the incident occurred, Joanna Bertram had already been living with Maxwell since the summer of 2011, her mother said. Joanna Bertram -- a convicted prostitute -- and Maxwell met online.

A convicted felon, Maxwell previously served nine years in prison for an attempted murder in 1988. He served another two-year stint starting in 1994 for burglary.

So it appears he was out in 1994 and went back to prison until 1996?

Hi TexasLil,

Can you add the following to the unsolved homicides map:

I think I still have some to add - would you prefer I list them a few at a time as I get the details together, or would one comprehensive list be better to work from?

All Added. I couldn't find photos so I used push pins for these. A few at a time is absolutely fine!

PORT ORANGE -- "Family members of a woman who disappeared from Holly Hill in 2011 say she may be the person whose remains were unearthed from the backyard of a Port Orange rape suspect.

An uncle of Chastity Starr -- a prostitute who was 27 when she was reported missing Jan. 15, 2011 -- said that investigators have been in touch with the family and told them the remains found are those of a small adult.

Port Orange police, since Monday, have been digging in the backyard of 180 Brandy Hills Drive. James Maxwell, 44, lived in the house and is awaiting trial in the rape of a 9-year-old girl who lived on his street."...

"We're not going to say who it is, but we have a good idea who it is," Monahan said at the scene. "This is a homicide investigation and James Maxwell is a suspect in that homicide."

Starr's is one of at least six cases of women with records of prostitution whose killers have not been caught.

Police in Daytona Beach believe the same person likely killed four prostitutes between 2005 and 2009.

Daytona Beach police Chief Mike Chitwood said today that Maxwell's DNA has been on file since 2000 and that it does not match DNA found on the bodies of prostitutes killed there.

Ormond Beach detectives were at the Port Orange scene on Tuesday but declined to say why.

The remains of Pamela Will, 48, were found in a ditch near Ormond Beach's airport in January 2011 and detectives in that city have been working the case. Will's last known location was Sept. 8, 2010, at the Red Carpet Inn at 1855 S. Ridgewood Ave. in South Daytona, where police said she was asked to leave for lack of payment."

"Maxwell lived at the house off and on since the 1980s, and most recently lived there with his girlfriend, her two children, the baby they share, and his teenage son, said neighbors."

""He was just a really creepy guy. Wouldn't talk a lot, just kind of stared and just the sixth sense being a mother, I think it's just what really got me. Just made me very nervous," said Carrie Lasky, who lives nearby. "Something is keeping them in that house or in that area of that property. So they know more than what they're telling the public -- which is pretty nerve-wracking for us that are waiting to see.""

"Positive identification of the body could take a month through DNA testing. However, police said they know who the person was and how they died, but refused to explain how they knew those details."

I just want to say that I have gone through all the women listed up to the 200 mark in the missing site and it is sobering to read each woman's story and how they went missing. Many of them have husbands and boyfriends that are POI and no charges have ever been filed, nor have the women been found. Very sad for all these families.

I will try to get the next group done tomorrow.

I understand completely! I'll work on your lists and should have them completed tomorrow.

If James Maxwell ends up being the killer of Starr then does he warrant a look for some of the other killings? Not familiar with the FL serial killings. TIA

We are compiling a list of unsolved homicides that may be the result of a serial killer or killers that are included in the original thread posting - the Daytona Beach serial killer case is also listed in the original thread for reference.

Scorpio,

Once you go though the woman list as missing, and decide from the circumstances if they should be included; I will do a search on the county records to see if they have drug or prostitution charges. Some have few details but the picture listed looks like mug shots. Some may be just missing because they wanted to flee, but I think some are foul play due to life style.

I am just now getting an opportunity to start reviewing the missing lists...I think this is going to take me a couple days now that I've had a chance to start reviewing the circumstances of the disappearances.

Human head found off Alligator Ally (Identified) notice the Daytona connection.

BSO investigators got a break in the case on Wednesday, July 18, when Douglas Stein walked into the Port Orange Police Department and told a detective that two of his roommates, Trucchio and Mackey, had bragged about murdering a white female and dumping her body parts in Florida. Stein went on to provide other valuable details such as where the devious duo discarded the New York license plate taken off of the blue pick up truck Stein saw them cleaning with bleach and muriatic acid. When the Port Orange detective performed a database search, he learned Trucchio and Mackey were stopped on May 1, 2007 by a Daytona Shores police officer and Trucchio was issued two traffic citations. The vehicle they were driving, a 1988 Dodge Dakota pick-up truck bearing New York tag D-S-E-7-7-2-8, and registered to Lorraine Hatzakorzian of Mastic, New York.

For anyone who does not know who Gerald Stano was, there is a thread in the 'Serial Killers' section about him. My mother knew him personally and has long believed/suspected that a close friend (his name is unknown so far; My mother cannot remember his name and did not know him well) of his was an accomplice in some of the murders Stano was charged with. "Gerald" or whom ever was known to target prostitutes, hitchhikers, runaways and younger women. Today his accomplice would be a white male roughly around 60 -61 years of age and quite possibly living in the same area, specifically around Daytona Beach. I think it is worth the effort for law enforcement to attempt to identify this friend (or re-investigate his current situation, if they know who he is) of Stano's. Perhaps they will find some answers in doing so.

By Bianca Prieto, Orlando Sentinel

Detectives from a dozen police departments in Orange and Osceola counties will join in a task force to investigate homicide cases....

"The murderers who think they've gotten away with it should be relatively frightened," said Orange-Osceola State Attorney Lawson Lamar, who helped organize the task force with the goal of bringing together less-experienced officers with seasoned detectives to investigate homicides.

Investigators from the Apopka, Belle Isle, Edgewood, Kissimmee, Maitland, Oakland, Ocoee, Orlando, St. Cloud, Windermere, Winter Garden and Winter Park police departments will be members of the task force. The State Attorney's Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are also participating.
