Relatives of the child learned of the discovery late Friday.

Local law enforcement agencies had been engaged throughout the afternoon in a high-intensity search along a creek bed in Liberty Township.

At around 3 p.m., while the search was still ongoing, a man who appeared to be in his 20s arrived on the scene. He was tearful, and said he was afraid that the search was for his one-year-old son. Another man who arrived later said that he had received a call saying officials were searching for his nephew, who was about a year old.

Details of the child's initial disappearance and ultimate fate were sketchy. The man who said he was the father of the child said he had not seen his son in about six months, despite efforts to do so. Other sources in contact with The Times-Gazette also indicated that the child had been unseen by many family members for a similar length of time.

The father said the child's mother had been arrested the previous evening.

It says the dad and other relatives said they hadn't seen the baby for about 6 months. :(

This reminds me so much of Dontrell Melvin's case.

Rest in peace, little Garin Niehaus

:( I have no words this morning.

Johnson’s aunt, Tonya Jordan, also of Hillsboro, is devastated.

She says she helped raise Garin and his two siblings, ages 5 and 7, and last saw them in December. She and other relatives had accused the couple of physically abusing Garin – asking the Hillsboro Police Department 60 miles east of Cincinnati to intervene and give the Jordans custody of all three children.

“We noticed (Garin) had bruises on his face, back,” said Anthony Jordan, Tonya’s husband. “You could clearly see the finger marks on his face.”

But police released the children to their mother, and she and Ritze disappeared in early December, Tonya Jordan said.

Tonya Jordan called Johnson’s mother Thursday to check on the children and was shocked to learn Whitney was telling people she had a baby that died, and only had two children.

The boy's father, Ian Niehaus says holding the vigil was the right thing to do.

"I want to bring attention to this and make sure that the people responsible for this pay," explained Ian.

The grieving father could barely hold back his tears as he talked about the death of his son.

He says he worried about Garin's safety while in the custody of his mother and her boyfriend.

"There was abuse going on. I heard from the mother's side of the family that there was evidence of abuse and there are other people that had called Children's Services," said Ian.

"Ian tried to file a missing person's report and was told he wasn't able to because he wasn't married to her, you know," explained Hall. "I drove around and looked on the weekends for their van for hours and I posted on Facebook their picture if anyone had seen them and we made efforts all of us."

So sad that police and family services were called and for whatever reason did not keep the babies :( The family did the right thing and that's not always the case. I'm sure it's very hard to call the police on your sister, aunt, cousin etc and say they are abusing their child . But they did the right thing and still the baby is gone :(

I think it's outrageous that this baby's family tried to file a missing person report and the police wouldn't let them. :stormingmad: The family did try really hard to do the right things for Garin and the other children, but were stonewalled at every turn, and Garin ended up murdered. Just makes me so angry.
