It sounds like there is bail, but most people can't afford it.

"Arrest and Detention

The law requires police to file a report with the Public Ministry within 24 hours after an arrest. The Public Ministry, in turn, must issue its own assessment of the legality of the police action in the arrest. Judges issue warrants based on sufficient evidence. The law also provides for the right to prompt judicial action. The time between an arrest and an appearance before a judge averaged 20 hours. Judges have 24 hours to decide whether to release a suspect or continue detention. A functioning bail system exists, but many poor defendants lacked the means to post bail. By law detainees are allowed access to a lawyer and to family members. The Ministry of Justice provided indigent persons with access to an attorney at no cost. Persons detained for espionage, drug trafficking, corruption, and terrorism may be held for up to 30 days. Police may detain suspected terrorists incommunicado for 10 days. The Public Ministry oversees the detention centers, which the ombudsman also monitored."

I'm trying (unsuccessfully at this point) to find out if Peru entertains the insanity defense. No luck so far.

I just can't see joran getting bail. He's a foreigner accused of a crime where a dead woman was found in his room after he's been seen entering with her. He then leaves in the middle of his poker tournament and is arrested in Chile after a very long car ride.

By the way...have we seen any footage of Joran in the casino? Just wondering if he had the dye job and buzz cut before the murder.

ETA: All above bolding and underlining by me.

Just to bump, we are getting conflicting stories of what Mark F said in this thread, so who knows.

Not calling any of you guys out, and no disrespect to the above quoted posters, but just shows how things can be interpreted differently. I appreciate the info as I couldnt watch it either. We'll know the details in time, maybe not our time, but in time. You have to imagine things are and have been happening fast and furious the last 24-48 hours. Signals get crossed.

Typing from my DVR NO Mention OF A Bat either way

MF : You heard there was blood, there was stabbing, in fact that is all not true. Lying on her back fully clothed, not covered. She had blood coming from left side of head, ear and nose. There was blunt force trauma to back of head and neck. The blunt force trauma caused hemorrhaging and death.

GVS asked about weapon, sexual assault and finger nail scrapping.

MF: Fingernail scrapings here is standard procedure. No sexual assault but can't rule out sexual relations. "As far as the weapon the ME made some interesting speculations, he opined the kind of box spring to a European style bed where the mattress sits on top, the mattress was askew on the corner. It was away as if the victim right where she lay below that corner, possibly that corner, that hardwood frame, could have been what she collided with the back of her head. But he opined this, that the force if it was her that fell would not be sufficient to cause the massage damage to her head, that she would have have to been driven into that bed frame by some other force, that being another human"

Yes, works just fine! I do so wish I understood Spanish. I'd really like to know what the bloggers, particularly the locals, are commenting after all these linked articles.

I use Google Chrome as my browser and when you open a page in a foreign language something pops up asking if you want to translate it, and it gives you a drop-down list of languages to translate it into. It's cool. Even the comments people write are translated.

It's buzzed but looks dark to me...http://www.peru.com/noticias/PORTADA20100604/100513/Joran-Van-Der-Sloot--se-registra-en-el-hotel-

Oy! Such irresponsible reporting. A tennis racket--yes. That's what was reported in the Peru media and Joran played tennis so that makes sense. Only NG is reporting baseball bat (others are just repeating her reporting). Makes no sense and if true why wasn't it reported in the Peru media? Like they are going to give NG the scoop but not their own reporters. Makes no sense. FBI could NOT HAVE ARRESTED JORAN ON MAY 10TH. Sorry to shout but I hate irresponsible reporting. Was he on American soil? No. Did the Aruban authorities agree to hold him for the US? We have heard from them but never have they said they would allow FBI to arrest him. Did Columbia state they would have allowed the arrest at their border? Not that I've heard. Does the FBI even have the authority to arrest a non-citizen on foreign soil for extortion or fraud even if Aruba or Columbia or Peru or any country for that matter would allow it? No they do not. The power of the FBI is set forth by statute. They don't have authority to do this. Greta used to represent white collar criminals in DC. She has to know this. Case closed.

Patty - are you intepreting that in that video, we are seeing the actual room? Or are they "staging" another room to show how the box spring/matress was askew from the frame? The rest of the room didn't really look like a "crime scene".

is this correct, they had to walk past the check in desk? to get in the hotel?
that girl does not have a jacket on as was reported on the body.

Thank-you! That was pretty close to my recollection of what was said.

IMO, it is the room. There was attention to the cigarettes on the table also.

The translation is: Room that occupied the Dutch and the Peruvian young person

I'm glad to have you guys posting about this. I'll skip it and watch Greta's rerun in about and hour!

me too - thanks for letting me know that I don't have to watch 20/20!! I DID want to watch Anderson Cooper - now I can!!

....and two glasses on the nightstand. Wonder if there are any traces of GHB, or other drugs in them.

Thanks all for the links and videos! Whew! I finally caught up and now going to watch a little TV - and when I get back in the morning - I'm pretty sure I'll have plenty to read here!
Night all!

If those were JVDS's cigarettes then he was in a hurry to leave. No smoker leaves cigarettes behind.

It looks like it is Stephanie sitting on a couch holding her head in her hands with her head down...You can see her hair, but because her clothing is dark as well as the couch it is hard to make out her body.
