OR - Nine killed in Umpqua Community College shooting, Roseburg, 1 Oct 2015 - #2

"Lawrence Levine appeared to be a man of simple needs, living alone in a rented cabin on the North Umpqua River. But his mind was complex and full of poetry.
He tended bar, taught college and guided fly fishers on the North Umpqua River, a waterway he knew like the back of his hand. But most of all he was a writer.

"He was the sweetest, most gentle, kind, thoughtful and creative person," said David Furman, a lifelong friend. "My heart is broken."

Furman and Levine grew up together in Beverly Hills, California. After graduating from Beverly Hills High School in the mid-1960s, Levine moved to Oregon. He earned a master's in creative writing at the University of Oregon. He moved back to California in the mid-1970s to teach creative writing at Pitzer College in the Los Angeles area.

He was at home in the wilds of Oregon.

Teaching was a side gig of sorts. Levine had only been at Umpqua Community College a few years. He spent more time earning his living as a fly fishing guide on the North Umpqua. He also went fly fishing in Patagonia, Weiss said.

Levine is survived by his sister, Joanne Levine Press, who lives in California. He also has an ex-wife in Oregon.

Rest in peace, Lawrence. (and may the fish always be biting, on the other side)

Done for now....need to have another cry. (This one has really hit me hard as my mom has lived in the area for decades and has many friends in Roseburg.)

Thanks for all of the beautiful posts, La Louve. I live on the opposite side of the country, and it's hit me pretty hard. So, I can imagine how it's touched those of you with connections to the community. My heart goes out to you.

{{{{{{{{La Louve}}}}}}}} I didn't realize your Mom lived near there. Hugs to her too. And thank you for keeping the focus on the victims. You are very special to me with your tender and generous heart. We have such a history on Stephanie's thread and I'm so glad you are here. 💜💜💜

Bessie, you've shown that your heart is beyond the bounds of geography! Hugs to you too. 💜💜💜

Reading these accounts and bios is breaking my heart ;(

One only has to read his full bio to imagine how Mr. Levine could've inspired the students that were murdered on Thursday. What great potential they all had. We will never know to what heights they could've reached, but I have no doubt he would've left an impression on them forever.

Thank you Bessie. Thank you Lilibet.

Campaign for Oregon shooting hero Chris Mintz raises more than $700,000 in just a day. !

"His aunt said in an interview with AP that Mintz had expressed concern about the other victims even as he lay in his hospital bed, and that he said he wished he could have saved more people."

http://blogs.theprovince.com/2015/1...-hero-chris-mintz-nears-700000-in-just-a-day/

He is right, we need to be focusing on the ones who lost their loved ones and the ones who will need to recover from this tragedy.

A petition on the White House website is calling for Chris Mintz, a student who was shot 7 times while trying to subdue a gunman at Umpqua Community college, to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom: the highest civilian award an American can receive.

The petition states that Mintz "displayed the values of loyalty, duty, respect, honor, integrity, personal courage, and self-sacrifice to attempt to save as many of his fellow citizens as possible."

Approximately 4,000 of the necessary 100,000 signatures have been received so far.

I don't know but if you click on the article I linked, then click on the word "petition" in the article, it will take you to the petition.

Sarena Dawn Moore, 44, was among the victims killed Thursday at Umpqua Community College.

A graduate of high school in Reno, Nevada, Moore lived in Myrtle Creek. Facebook profile pictures of dogs and horses allude to a woman with a passion for animals. She had two sons also living in southern Oregon.

Moore, a Seventh-day Adventist, attended church in Grants Pass. She listed the church as her employer. The church posted a message to Facebook on Friday mourning her death.

"It's been reported that one of Sarena's last posts on Facebook was an affirmation of her desire to stand up for Jesus and Christianity," the message states.

Rest in peace, Sarena.

I can't imagine what kind of vile, evil animal would shoot someone like this for being a Christian.

I don't understand how 4chan works that people can remain totally anonymous. The FBI took it serious enough to alert the schools. I have to say I'm a bit nervous about tomorrow.

I don't think the users at 4Chan can remain completely anonymous .. Plenty of members of Anonymous have been arrested in the past for various online infractions, so here's hoping the worst can be tracked down and prosecuted.

It is especially disgusting that this Oregon shooter had actually enrolled in that English class. He knew he was going to shoot his fellow classmates and his professor. It is so cold hearted and cruel that it is hard to believe.

My DIL teaches Freshman English. She just transferred from the University to teach in the Community College because it fit her schedule better, with their new baby. And this shooting, just up the coast, really shook her up.

She recently had to have a student 'escorted' off the campus because he was angry that there was no room in the class. He was on the WAIT list and came every day the first week but she could only add 2 from the long list. He was angry and came every day for the next 2 weeks but sat and made angry noises and argued with her about the class. She could not add him but he refused to accept that. Eventually 2 kids dropped out but by then she was not going to allow him in because he was acting so strangely and erratically and it was a mess. It has made her very nervous about being a college teacher. So sad to see because she LOVES teaching.

(from my days as a telecommunications paralegal responding to search warrants and subpoenas) The IP address of the poster would have to be identified. Once the IP address is identified then LE would need to get a search warrant signed by a judge to require the ISP to provide the user's identity. That's assuming the poster was not using a proxy server to post on 4chan, in which case their IP address would not be visible without digging into the proxy server site.

Or, the information for the registration of the particular username would need to be subpoenaed from the owners of the website. (ETA and that's assuming the info would be of any use to LE). From what I know of 4chan, I wouldn't be surprised if they dawdled on providing the info.

ETA From my years of working with the FBI and ATF on subpoenas and search warrants, if they consider this a credible enough threat to warn the universities, then they are furiously working with telecoms and ISPs to get the user's information.

And I won't even get into the NSA stuff.

I get the impression there is a lot of proxy use going on there. And I don't think anybody needs to register a username to post there.
