Yes. They are physically safe. Emotionally, I can't imagine how they're coping. I assume since they had all finished, the spectators there to support them had also moved away.

A group of runners from Newtown, Connecticut, were caught up in the bloody aftermath of the Boston Marathon explosions – after running the race in memory of the 26 victims that lost their lives in the Sandy Hook massacre.

Among the 27,000 runners in the event was a group called NewtownStrong, a group of Newtown parents taking part in the event to raise money for the siblings of children lost in the mass shooting four months ago.
The group had dedicated each of the race's 26.2 miles to one of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting's 26 victims.
The group of eight runners and numerous supporters who cheered the group on are reportedly safe, according to the group's Facebook page.
"All runners completed the race before the explosions happened," a post read.

What scares me is how vunerable we are right now. Sure, the people will stick together, and security has been really ramped up at gov't bldgs, the White House, Capitol, etc. But all eyes are on Boston.

We have a bunch of "nutjobs" out there right now that don't like us, threaten us (almost on a daily basis lately) and really want to see us taken down.

It scares me that one of them might see this as as opportunity to blindside us somewhere else. Not that any of them are working together - but that's a possibility too - and that scares me even more.

In general, these creeps like dates, events and locations with specific significance. American targets would then be symbols of our economy, culture, freedom and unity, like Olympic games, airlines with names that refer to the nation, the Fourth of July, Disneyland, the Super Bowl, the White House, Veteran's day, that kind of thing.

In any event, just after a cowardly act of terrorism is probably the safest time ever when it comes to potential terrorist acts.

I'm cautious about big, crowded events in general but I don't think letting these bastards run us scared helps us. In fact I think it helps them.

Nails and blades make sense... but ZIPPERS?! :what:

I was on a couple news sites with comment boards and am still shaking with anger at some of the comments made by posters about the Newtown people. Seems some fanatics want them to shut up and go away. I made a few back, won't repeat them. Funny how this sort of thing brings out both the best and the worst in us..

OMG, I had to go to class tonight at six. After everything that had happened I did not want to leave, but alas I had to. Could someone on here please catch me up because I cannot possibly keep up with such a fluid situation by reading the thread from the beginning right now. Just the main points would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for any information you all could provide.

I didn't read any of the comments - I'm sorry, I should have checked before posting the links.

Some people like to hide away anything that isn't happy, beautiful, and in line with their view of how the world should be.

Other people don't have the choice. They have to live with things that aren't wonderful. Every day.

I'm sure the Newtown families would LOVE to be in a situation where they weren't out raising money and awareness because of the violence perpetuated against them.

I pray the man survives, and has his picture made after his recovery so the world can remember him by that picture instead of this horrible image.

Three dead, 130+ hurt, 17 in critical condition after two bombs exploded; a third was detonated by LE. A Saudi national is a person of interest. LE also searched an apartment building in Revere MA though it is not known if they took anything away. Two persons, identities unclear, are alleged to be sought by LE. Bombs are said to be anti-personnel type devices containing - reportedly - ball bearings, blades, nails, and the like, designed both to kill and to maim.

So true, fabvab. Thanks to social media we know he is stable. Bless him as he'll have a long road to recovery.

Does anyone know what Revere, Mass is like?

Was reading about the "raid" and the apartment building is supposed to be a h*** hole and not good with background checks of their tenants.

I also just heard a former FBI agent explaining how a cell phone detonates a bomb and I didn't realize you could be across the world and detonate the bomb. You just have to call the number of the cell in the bomb and it detonates. I thought you needed to be close by.

We don't know if these bombs were denotated by a cell phone. They could also be on a timer. In either case a bomber does not need to be close by.
