First, shame on Mr. Cohen. He knew better. I'm not surprised by the five years or the RSO status but I've not seen lifetime supervision by the Parole Board. That's an odd one.

Ex-NJ lawmaker to be sentenced in child *advertiser censored* case

"A former New Jersey lawmaker who championed legislation fighting child *advertiser censored* will be sentenced for viewing nude images of underage girls.
Neil Cohen could be sent to prison for five years Monday.

Cohen acknowledged viewing and printing images meant for sexual gratification from a computer in his former legislative office...."

and

"...Cohen will be required to register as a sex offender under Megan's Law and be subject to lifetime supervision by the Parole Board...."

I have actually been seeing more lifetime supervision lately. Can't think of a specific case at the moment, but when I do, I'll post it.

Really? Lifetime oversight by the Parole Board? How can this be afforded? I would think management would be a morass. I know the vast majority have lifetime registry but I've not heard of Parole Board supervisions. Does one have to sit before the Parole Board each year and check in? What happens if you don't pass muster?

I'm not doubting you, Belinda, I'm just surprised.

Good question. It does seem odd, once your parole is over, you'd be released from thier supervision, no? Maybe they meant to say lifetime probation?

IMO, that's highly unusual too. There's certainly lifetime registry. That sure isn't working but I did some research and can't find anything about lifetime supervision by a parole board. Once you've done your time and are up to date on the registry, you're good to go.

In Oregon, you only get post prison supervision IF you are released early for some reason. Anything else would be some sort of civil commitment, I would think. I'll do some more looking tomorrow.

re: Bold, That's what I thought too. I didn't research, but I live in NJ and understood parole to be early release, with supervision. Once your 'release date' would come, parole would be over. I think the article just meant lifetime probation......Uh-oh, here comes a rant! And I hate the way news media reports things as if they are true. I read reports of and accident or crime in the city I grew up in, and the streets they name do not intersect. EX: there is a 'First Avenue' and a 'First Street' but they are in different sections of the city. Makes me nuts. Ok, rant over. :banghead:

Wow. It is correct!! In NJ, at least, and that's where this guy is. Here's an explanation:

http://www.state.nj.us/parole/somu.html

"The New Jersey State Parole Board is New Jersey's primary law enforcement agency responsible for sex offender supervision. Simply put, the goal of the agency's supervision of sex offenders is to prevent further victimization.

The State Parole Board's population of sex offenders under supervision has increased by 710 individuals during the past 12 months (as of April 2009). The agency's caseload of more than 5,300 sex offenders is one of the largest in America, mainly due to the advent of Supervision for Life sentencing guidelines for sex offenders. Under State law, the vast majority of sex crimes committed on or after October 31, 1994 will result in lifetime supervision under the State Parole Board's jurisdiction...."

(They must be hiring. Looks like this is a wonderful place to apply for a parole position if you are qualified. I wonder if other states will follow suit?)

Mr. Cohen seemed perfectly capable of serving the state of NJ while he was engaging in downloading child *advertiser censored*, often from a computer paid for by taxpayers. It was only after his arrest that his deep depression and suicidal tendencies seemed to set in. So, the constant access to child *advertiser censored* kept the demons at bay or the shame of an arrest triggered this severe mental illness? Hmmmm.

He also could be released in a matter of months. I would agree that the man has "issues".

Ex-N.J. lawmaker sentenced for child *advertiser censored*

"A former New Jersey lawmaker who championed legislation fighting child *advertiser censored* was sentenced yesterday to five years for viewing nude images of underage girls.

Neil Cohen will serve the term either in prison or a mental hospital. The state Corrections Department will decide which venue within the next 10 days. He could become eligible for release and be placed under intense supervision in several months.

Appearing pale and unsteady, Cohen, 59, did not speak during sentencing. His lawyer told the judge the former assemblyman has been suicidal and has several mental health issues, including chronic depression. He has been hospitalized for months...."

and

"....Cohen served 17 years in the state Legislature as a Democrat from Union County. He resigned after his July 2008 arrest...."
