Two officers reportedly were shot in rural Pierce County north of Eatonville and south of Graham at Tanwax Lake after responding to a domestic violence call. Apparently two brothers were in a heated argument.<snipped>

When officers went to the door, one man greeted them while his brother opened fire, Troyer said. The gunman fired several rounds, hitting the deputies, who managed to fire back.

One brother was shot dead, Troyer said. No information was available on the second brother.

We've been listening to the scanner in the Parking Lot.

Update on the KOMO site:

"They were basically ambushed," he said. "The suspect was upstairs and out of view of the deputies."

The gunman fired several rounds, hitting the deputy and the sergeant, who managed to fire back.

The gunman was shot dead, Troyer said. His brother and the unwanted guest were not hurt.

It is not known why the deputies were targeted.

Troyer said the two wounded men are married, and that their family members were being notified.

"Our department is so small we all know everybody. We're rounding up families and kids, and getting them to the hospitals," he said.

Reports are that locals are reeling due to the recent killing of officers not far away...

Wow; my heart goes out to the families of the officers and the daughter of the killed man. I can't imagine her watching all that happened. I hope someone makes sure she gets some help! How awful for the commmunity as a whole; I'm so glad I don't live in that part of the state; something seems to be polluting the entire area! Tacoma has always had one of the highest crime rates in the state but this is getting ridiculous.

A 16-year-old girl, identified as Crable's daughter, also was in the house.

After gunfire erupted, the girl and Crable's brother dragged one of the wounded deputies into an adjoining room, barred the door, began first aid and called 911, said Troyer.

"They went out of their way to help him," Troyer said.

Neighbors also gave aid to the wounded deputies.

Pretty amazing how they did what they could to save the officer! :)

Crable had trouble with family, run-ins with the law

SEATTLE -- The man who was gunned down during a shootout with a Pierce County deputy and a sergeant on Monday night had trouble with the law just months prior.

Records show David Edward Crable had been convicted of two crimes - malicious mischief in the third degree and unlawful display of a weapon - in an incident involving his teenage daughter in June 2009.

According to the statement of probable cause, Crable, 35, was threatening his daughter with a kitchen knife, shoving her face up against the wall and slapping the back of her head several times.

When his brother tried to interfere, Crable "grabbed him by the throat and pushed him out of the house," the statement said.

How sad to read of another tragedy and see Ed Troyer having to face the media again and two of his officers now fighting for their lives in the hospital. Thankfully at least this time the officers are still alive and there won't be need for a manhunt like happened less than a month ago. My prayers for their recovery. :praying:

My late husband was retired LE, and he used to say that the domestic violence calls could be more dangerous than going after a bank robber. Some officers just hate going on domestic violence calls because you never know what you are going to encounter.

Also, so many of the times when they respond to a domestic violence call the female says to please not take the husband or the boyfriend to jail. When my late husband was LE, it was so long ago that the laws were not the same. There was no mandatory arrest in domestic violence calls. Now the man and the woman involved sometimes go to jail because women are fighting back, both may be injured in some way, and both go to jail.

May God bless and keep these officers' families. Each day these officers went to work they knew there was a possibility they may not come home at the end of the shift. They are hero's, IMO.

Deputy wounded in shootout dies at Seattle hospital

SEATTLE -- A Pierce County sheriff's deputy wounded in a shootout during a domestic disturbance last week has died.

Kent Mundell was taken off life support Monday afternoon at Harborview Medical Center, officials said. He was 44.

Sheriff spokesman Ed Troyer said Mundell was surrounded by his wife and children when he died.

"Obviously everybody was waiting for a miracle, and it didn't come," Troyer said. "The fact that he survived as long as he did is amazing, and that's why, I think, people were hoping for a miracle. But it just wasn't meant to be. The wounds were too severe, and he has passed on."

Mundell's death marks the sixth area law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty in two months.

Mundell and Sgt. Nick Hausner were shot by David E. Crable while trying to remove him from a home in Eatonville.

Mundell managed to shoot back and kill Crable, investigators said.

Hausner was treated at Madigan Army Medical center and is recovering from a gunshot wound to the neck. He was able to visit Mundell last week at Harborview.

Thank you for updating us Panthera, even if the news is devastatingly sad. My heart just breaks for the family and the officers who worked with this man.

The Seattle area LE needs all our prayers right now.

Amen to that! This is just beyond tragic for all LE in that area. I saw some video and it's the same spokesman for the Sheriff's Dept. who handled the media when the other four officers were shot last month. My heart just goes out to him having to go through this so soon ~ again.

Rest in Peace, Deputy Mundell :rose:

Thanks Panthera for the recent news, although it is heartbreaking. What must the families of LE officers go through everyday when their loved ones go to work ? I especially wonder about the ones in Washington state with so much recent violence being directed at them. My prayers are with all of them.

Memorial service is Tuesday for fallen deputy

As the body of Pierce County sheriff's Deputy Kent Mundell Jr. was escorted Tuesday from the Seattle hospital where he died to a Lakewood funeral home, law-enforcement officers and Pierce County officials were planning his memorial service.

Mundell's service — to be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Tacoma Dome — will be the third police funeral in the past two months for weary law-enforcement officers in Western Washington.

"Unfortunately, here in Western Washington, we're really good at putting on police funerals," said Sgt. Ed Troyer, spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

But, he added, "We're worn out after all the other ones."
