Woman is jailed for battering her grandmother to death with a spade/shovel while she lay in bed
A 33-year-old woman who murdered her grandmother by repeatedly battering her with a spade while she lay in her bed was told today she must serve at least 20 years in prison.
The judge told Joanne Hussey she knew she would gain financially from the death of Annie Garbutt before sentencing her to life in prison at Leeds Crown Court.
Hussey, of Yeadon, Leeds, admitted the manslaughter of her 76-year-old grandmother but denied murder on the grounds of diminished responsibility, claiming voices in her head had told her to do it.
But a jury at Leeds Crown Court took just one hour to find her guilty of the 'brutal' murder following a trial which finished last month.
