20 years later, classmates say Erica Fraysure's disappearance 'ruined their lives'

The teen's disappearance has affected the entire community in some way, Miller said.

"They're adults now," Miller said of Fraysure's senior class. "But many say (Fraysure's disappearance) has literally ruined their lives. And, in turn, it's ruining their children's lives. They're helicopter parents; they don't want their children going outside to get the mail."

And because there's no official suspect, nearly everyone in the small town of Brooksville is an unofficial one, Miller said.

"There are some students people who were -- or still -- are suspicious of," Miller said. "There are some who were riding around with her that night until she disappeared. They'd like to move on, too."

Kentucky Community Still Fearful 20 Years After Erica Fraysure Disappears

For 20 years, people in Brooksville have lived with the fear that the same person who might have taken Erica, could be right down the street, simply waiting for another opportunity to abduct another unsuspecting teen.

Amanda Lang, Erica’s best friend, tells Dateline that her life plans changed dramatically after Erica disappeared. Suddenly, she was too afraid to leave her house or go away for college.

Chief Deputy Bob Scott from the Bracken County Police Department told Dateline that authorities found Erica’s car abandoned on a country road later that day. The keys were missing and her purse was still inside the car, untouched. However, there wasn’t enough evidence to help investigators piece together what happened the night Erica disappeared.

“We don't know any more about what happened to Erica now than we did the day we first examined her vehicle,” Chief Deputy Scott told Dateline.

Kentucky State Trooper Charles Loudermilk says the case is ongoing, but without new information, the case is at a standstill.

“We know that she went out, we know that her car was found, but we don’t know that middle piece,” State Trooper Loudermilk told Dateline. That middle piece, he said, can make the difference in solving this puzzling case.

KY teen girl's disappearance 20 years ago still a murder mystery

"I was told her body was taken to hog farm,” said Chief Deputy Scott.

"Also buried underneath the new high school,” said Jeanie Rosel of Brookesville.

“I know a whole lot more about what didn't happen because of the leads and the dead ends. I’ve had four people confess to killing Erica. It didn't happen,” said Chief Deputy Scott.

Scott says it's possible one only one person knows what happened. Of course, he has someone in mind and there is a clue he won't talk about. One that only he and the person responsible know about.

Sounds like the last guy she was with needs to be heavily scrutinized

I agree. I think Shane Simcox murdered her. LE needs to interview women in that town and find out whether he has any living rape victims. A pattern may emerge.

Bumping for still missing Erica Lee Fraysure
IMG_20201002_090853.jpg IMG_20201002_090917.jpg Clothing/Jewelry Description:
A purple sweater with two white stripes across the chest which extend down the sleeves, Levi's jeans, white Keds sneakers, a Winnie The Pooh watch and four gold rings on her right hand, one of which has a sapphire and diamond heart

Distinguishing Characteristics:
Caucasian female. Light brown hair, blue eyes. Erica has a strawberry birthmark on the back of her neck

Details of Disappearance:
Erica was last seen been 9:00 and 10:00 p.m. at the Video-N-Tan in Brooksville, Kentucky on October 21, 1997. She was socializing with her friends that night. She has never been heard from again.

Erica's black four-door 1988 Pontiac Bonneville SSE was discovered unlocked and abandoned off of Fronk Road between bales of hay in a field off Fronks Lane the day after her disappearance. The vehicle was located approximately one mile from the Video-N-Tan.

Her purse, wallet, checkbook and money were inside the car, but there was no sign of her at the scene. Erica's car keys were missing for some time afterwards, but were later discovered across the road under some leaves. There was no sign of Erica near the car, nor were there any signs of foul play. A photo of the vehicle is posted with this case summary.

A man who was questioned about Erica's disappearance later shot his wife to death before committing suicide. Authorities say the individual was ruled out as a suspect in Erica's case before he died; he had an alibi for the night of her disappearance.

Another suspect, 20-year-old Shane M. Simcox, an acquaintance of Erica's, was with Erica the night she vanished and may have been the last person to see her. He stated she gave him a ride to his house, dropping him off at 9:00 p.m.

Simcox had previously been expelled from Bracken County High School for threatening a teacher and her daughter. He has a criminal record for burglary and he refused to take a lie detector test in connection with Erica's case, but he has maintained his innocence in her disappearance and no convincing evidence has been found against him. He is, however, considered a person of interest in Erica's disappearance.

Erica was a resident of Germantown, Kentucky, fifty miles south of Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1997. She was a senior at Bracken County High School in 1997 and worked part-time at Carota's Pizza in Augusta. Shortly before she went missing, she requested more hours at her job. She planned to enroll in Northern Kentucky University after graduation and study accounting.

Although she'd started hanging out with a rough crowd and she had argued with her best friend prior to her disappearance, authorities do not believe Erica left of her own accord. She has no history of running away, she was a good student with a steady boyfriend and no indications of trouble in her life, and she didn't tell her friends of any travel plans.

There are few leads in Erica's case. Her parents have both died in the years since her disappearance. Due to lack evidence as to her fate, her disappearance is being investigated as a missing person rather than a crime

Investigators still pursuing leads in 1997 case of missing teen

BRACKEN COUNTY, Ky. (FOX19) - A recent tip in the case of a missing woman led Kentucky State Police investigators and cadaver dogs to a particular stairwell at a local school Wednesday searching for her body.

The investigators couldn’t say where the stairwell or the school were located. What they could say is this: The search came up empty, meaning, for the moment, Erica Fraysure remains missing.

Fraysure was 17 years old when on Oct. 21, 1997 she disappeared in Bracken County.

At the time, Fraysure was described as 5′6″ and 115 lbs. with brown hair and blue eyes.

Authorities say she was last seen wearing a purple sweater dark blue Levis and white Keds. They also say she had a Winnie the Poo watch and other jewelry on.

Officers say Fraysure’s car was found on an isolated road near Brooksville. Authorities found her purse in the car, but the car’s keys were missing.

“There’s just so many different variables,” KSP Trooper Cory Elliot said. “The lack of information is probably the hardest thing in a case like this.”

Elliot says leads bout Fraysure being buried in a stairwell aren’t unfamiliar to authorities; the original investigator in her case received a similar lead years prior.

Neither lead panned out, but Elliot says KSP won’t stop pursuing new tips or information, if only for the sake of Fraysure’s family.

“They deserve peace of mind,” he said. “Everyone always wants answers. They deserve to know what happened to their loved one.”

Elliot added, “We don’t give up on cases, no matter how old they are.”

Flyers used in this story are from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Photos are provided by NaMus.gov.

Anyone with information on Fraysure’s disappearance is urged to contact KSP Post 6 at (859) 428-1212.

How could somebody be buried in a stairwell? Do these stairwells have dirt floors? Or did somebody supposedly break up the concrete in a stairwell and re-pave it? The latter scenario would limit the suspect pool (although I think the suspect pool is is a pool of one anyway, namely Shane Simcox).
