WASECA, MINN. – John David LaDue had it all figured out. He would kill his mother, father and sister and then create a diversion to keep first responders busy while he went to Waseca Junior/Senior High School to wreak havoc.

There, the 17-year-old planned to set off pressure-cooker bombs full of nails and metal ball bearings in the cafeteria. Students who weren’t maimed or killed would be gunned down in the halls, he told police.

After his arrest Tuesday, the high school junior said he intended to kill “as many students as he could,” before he was killed by the SWAT team, according to charging documents filed in Waseca County District Court.

LaDue was charged Thursday with four counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree damage to property and six counts of possession of a bomb by someone under 18. Police found seven firearms and at least six completed bombs in his bedroom and in the storage unit where he was arrested.

These stories are becoming all too common. Thank God this attack was prevented.

It's a good thing someone was paying attention.

What made this kid want to kill so many? smh

Wow! Thank goodness for that alert person who felt something was off. So scary. I wonder what red flags there were that his parents missed? Seems odd that he was able to collect so many guns and things for the bombs without it being noticed in the home at all.

It's really interesting to note that inner-city schools with gang and drug problems are not places where most shootings and problems such as in Waseca are happening. What's with small towns and suburbs?

For one, it takes a kind of economic privilege to have the free time to fester in your own misanthropy and spend hours upon hours researching bomb materials etc. The student was a hunter, another activity not enjoyed by all segments of society. Urban gang and drug violence should not be excused, but a lot of the time it is about protecting yourself and your family and just *surviving.* Something bored, angry suburban kids don't worry about too frequently. (all major generalizations, of course.)

Not sure about frequency of gun/metal detectors, but I'd bet urban schools are more likely to have those.

School shooters have no one profile as motives vary widely. However, many feel they are being persecuted, an all too common trait of rampage killers. Some are bullied, while others are bullies, and some are neither, just angry.

Evidently we will never be able to depend on the parents of these kids to warn us about things like this, because they seem incapable of seeing reality.

When all is said and done, I'm pretty sure if will be found there were some very clear signs that the parent(s) ignored.

John David LaDue, in an orange jumpsuit and shackled at his ankles, denied responsibility Monday for an alleged plot to murder his family and commit a massive school shooting at the Waseca Junior/Senior High School.

The 17-year-old LaDue is currently being housed at the Minnesota Correction Facility in Red Wing after reportedly being discovered April 29 with guns, bomb making materials and a detailed account of how he planned to carry out the plan in which he said he wanted to kill as many people as possible.

LaDue's father, David LaDue,wearing a National Rifle Association T-shirt, stood when his son, an honor roll student at Waseca High School walked into the courtroom.

I don't know what to say except wow!!

Well, that's just tacky. There's a time and place for bumpersticker politics, and your would-be mass-murdering son's legal appearance ain't it.

Well. I guess his National Bomb-Making Association T-shirt was in the wash?

In a probable cause hearing that lasted only 10 minutes, Judge Gerald Wolf Wednesday sealed John David LaDue's journal in which he reportedly laid out his plans to kill his family and carry out a massive school bombing and shooting.

Defense attorney Dawn Johnson last month said the journal contains information that may prejudice a potential jury and should be sealed from public view...

Wolf also sealed part of the police reports written by Det. Angela Grotberg and Off. Sam McGinnis' in which the journal is quoted, both of which were submitted into evidence.

They released tons of documents today and recordings of his interviews with police.Has anyone been able to find a link to them?

Most of these rampage shooters generally die in their attacks and are rarely thwarted. It will be interesting to read his words and see what was going on in his mind.

Oh and the dad wearing the NRA T-shirt after his son admitted that he wanted to "kill as many as he could". NOT SURPRISED at all. But I am disgusted. On many levels.

According to charging documents, Michael S. Jacobs, 40, admitted to selling a .45 caliber Llama handgun to LaDue in summer or early fall of 2013.

The documents say Jacobs said he needed money and asked his son, a friend of LaDue’s, to put out “feelers” to see if anyone wanted to buy the pistol. The son said Jacobs required a note from LaDue’s father saying it was OK. LaDue’s father told police he didn’t know his son was buying the pistol until he came home with it, however. Jacobs sold the gun and one magazine to LaDue for $350 and failed to report the sale to local police, the charges say.
