GUILTY TX - William Lewis Reece, Serial Killer - Laura Smither, 12, Kelli Cox, 20, and Jessica Cain, 17

Police discover remains at dig site for girl missing since '97

The discovery of skeletal remains in a field in south Houston could mean investigators discovered the final resting place of a Galveston teenager who disappeared almost two decades ago, or it could signal the start of an entirely new homicide investigation.

"Right now, we have no clue who this person is," said Richard Martinez, a detective with the Houston Police Department's homicide division.

[...]

After weeks of searching the field, about 2:30 p.m. Friday a backhoe operator at the site signaled the discovery of the apparent remains. An anthropologist and other analysts with the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences were called to the scene.

"Right now, they're in the process of recovering those remains," Martinez said. "There is enough there to know that it's a body."

He said the remains were found at least four feet below the surface.

One of the stories says they will begin digging at another site where they believe he buried another body next week. But, who could that be? I am assuming they are meaning in the Houston area, so likely isn't Kelli Cox.

Ok, it seems they've already searched a field in Brazoria County for Kelli Cox, but why would he move her so far from Denton? That is pretty dangerous.

According to law enforcement sources, police will begin digging at another site in the Houston area next week. Investigators think another victim of Reece could be buried there.

I have little doubt he is responsible for Laura Smither's murder. My question is when did he show up on LE's radar for that crime. Did they question him shortly after and he then went on to abduct the others or did he not come to their attention until after he was arrested for Ms Sapaugh's attempted abduction.

Expanding slightly on Bessie's WLR timeline from a few pages back,

Abducted/assaulted OSU student, victim escaped, 1986-1987.

While out on bond awaiting trial, woman followed home from OK bar and raped, 1986-1987.

Convicted, 1987.

Incarcerated, 1987- Oct 5 1996

Known and highly suspected victims,

Laura Smither, abducted/murdered, Friendswood TX, April 3, 1997.

Sapaugh, Webster TX, abducted/escaped, May 16-17, 1997.

Tiffany Johnston, Bethany OK, abducted/murdered, July 26, 1997.

Jessica Cain, disappeared, La Marque TX, August 17, 1997.

Arrested for Sapaugh assault, OCT 1997.

Convicted for Sapaugh assault, sentenced to 60 years, 1998

Incarcerated, Oct 1997-present.

Possible victims,

Tina Bowen, disappeared, Conroe TX, July 14, 1997.

Kelli Cox, disappeared, Denton TX, July 15, 1997.

In one video report they mentioned a missing woman from Houston in June 1997, I cant find anyone fitting that disappearance.

I haven't seen Tina Bowen mentioned in relation to Reece but she is the same victim type and went missing in the same time frame from just north of Houston.

I'm also looking for where in OK he lived and his location in the early to mid 80's as well as what he looked like and the vehicles he drove (specifically in 1984) if anyone comes across that info.

He is also suspected of abducting Anjanette Sorrentino, 22, from Houston in July 1997 (haven't found a specific date). She was raped and choked, but escaped.

"A law enforcement source close to the investigation tells Eyewitness News they plan on expediting this case. They could begin digging at another location for another body as early as this week.

The Galveston County District Attorney said if the body is identified as Cain, he will work with the Harris County District Attorney's office to develop a prosecution strategy against William Reece.

Law enforcement sources tell abc13 that they will next turn their focus to a dig site is located in Brazoria County. All agencies involved had a meeting today and decided crews will not start digging there until next week. They will restore the East Orem field starting Wednesday and then will move resources over to the Brazoria location next week."

The remains were found along Hwy 288 north of Angleton. There have been other remains found along that highway, I just cannot remember who/when. I have it written down somewhere.

Unless he (or someone else) confesses to the murder of Smither, I don't think that crime can be solved. Her body was contaminated at the medical examiner's office.

Comprehensive story on Reece from the Dallas Morning News.

In October 1996, after an appeals court reduced his sentence because of improper comments by a prosecutor, Reece went free.

He showed up at his mother’s house in Anadarko, where many locals knew little about his past. He seemed “very polite,” said Kathy Dobry, a family friend who said she took Reece into the city to get a new driver’s license, as a favor to his mother.

“And dummy me,” she said, “I didn’t think to ask what he’d been in jail for because it didn’t concern me and my family.”

Until that summer, when her teenage daughter disappeared.

A contingent of prosecutors and investigators from Texas traveled to Oklahoma Monday as part of continuing legal negotiations regarding a man suspected of murdering several women and young girls in the late 1990s...

Osso said Reece is "willing to accept responsibility" for the deaths... Osso said he is trying to negotiate a deal that will resolve all of the Texas cases quickly before Reece is sent to Oklahoma to answer for Johnston's murder.

"That will require that everybody agree to take the death penalty off the table," Osso said.

Osso said Texas officials have agreed to this, while Oklahoma officials have not.

Gay Smither acknowledges that "forgiveness is a journey," but she said that one day she'd like to sit down and look into the eyes of William Reece, the admitted serial killer linked to the death of her 12-year-old daughter Laura.

(...)

Smither made her comments after Reece, a convicted kidnapper and rapist, agreed during a court hearing Wednesday to be returned to Oklahoma to be tried for capital murder in the 1997 death of another young woman.

The mother of a woman slain in 1997 had waited for years to see someone in court charged in the death.

So Kathy Dobry was at first lost for words when that moment came Thursday morning as Oklahoma County sheriff deputies escorted murder defendant William Lewis Reece into court.

Dobry's daughter, Tiffany Johnston, was abducted July 26, 1997, from a Bethany car wash, according to police.

Johnston, 19 at the time, was found the following day in Yukon. She had been strangled to death, authorities said.

Now, nearly two decades later, Dobry said she is ready for justice after such "a long road."

Highway of Hell
Nearly 40 women have been butchered on a short stretch of road in Texas—have cops finally nabbed the killer?

Interstate-45 from Houston to Galveston, Texas is the bloodiest stretch of highway in America.

Just 80 km long, over the past 45 years nearly 40 women and young girls have been murdered or vanished along this stretch of road.

Their bodies have been dumped in fields, parks and the bayou.

But now, scientific advances may have finally ended the macabre dance of death. The question now is: was there more than one maniac on the loose?

He first struck June 17, 1971.

“Many of these girls had the same look, the same hairstyle, were close to the same age, were on foot and their bodies found near water,’ says Galveston Police Det. Att Wingo.

But detectives finally got a break this year when a 58-year-old jailbird named William Lewis Reece told them he was responsible for a number of the murders. He led them to the bodies of Cox and Cain and confessed to Smither’s murder.

He was serving time in a Texas prison for raping and kidnapping a teenage girl. But now, Oklahoma cops have linked him to the 1997 sex slaying of Tiffany Johnston, 19.
