One of the last people to see Nalepa alive says she was "subdued" and quiet on Tuesday, the day before her body was found.

Ted Greenberg of a local dog daycare company came to the mansion Monday morning to pick up the family dog, a 14-month old Weimaraner named Ocean.

“A woman named Rebecca asked us if we could come and pick up her dog because her kid was in an accident, in the hospital and in a coma, and she wanted to go to the hospital and not worry about her dog,” Greenberg said.

...A friend of Nalepa, who asked not to be identified, said the woman she knew was born in Burma, attended a Christian Bible College in Austria and would never consider suicide.

Nalepa has been described as the live in girlfriend of 54-year-old Jonah Shacknai, the chairman and CEO of Medicis Pharmaceutical Corporation, based in Scottsdale, AZ. They are reported to have been in a relationship for the past two years.

She had previously been employed from April 2008 to December 2010 by Horizon Eye Specialists & Lasik Center in north Phoenix as a certified ophthalmic technician, aiding doctors in Lasik and cataract surgeries, according to company CEO Michael J. Trier.

Ms. Nalepa was originally born Myanmar, also known as Burma, and attended a Christian bible college in Austria, before emigrating to the United States. A friend confided to a reporter at KNSD-TV that, because of her religious beliefs, it is highly unlikely that Rebecca would commit suicide.

Someone wanted to know this...

I assume they took breaks and went for lunch ... maybe just long enough to talk with someone outside. I don't think that would seem suspicious. Otherwise, I'd be looking closely at their phone calls as well as checking out all footage at the hospital to see who they were communicating with to eliminate them as suspects.

You don't really feel like eating when your child is in the PICU.
It's even worse when you know they are not coming out alive.

When it is completely unexpected and sudden? It makes it that much worse. Max went from a happy, healthy, active little boy to a dead little boy... just like that. No time to prepare.

Even with kids who are going to be okay, we often have to take food IN to parents and practically force them to eat it. I have made many a trip to the favorite fast food place of a parent, in hopes they would eat that.

Very few willingly leave to go eat and we are lucky if they go as far as the vending machines. They have family/friends who bring them food. Or the hospital will often provide them with food. Especially in this family's circumstance.

I would be pretty surprised if either parent left the hospital to eat during that time... especially both of them at the same time.

Spreckels Mansion Hanging Wasn't a Suicide, Victim's Sister Tells ABC News

"Our investigation would include Max's incident," San Diego sheriff spokesman Roy Frank told ABCNews.com. "

"Rebecca was a beautiful, vibrant, loving and kind person and she would never do this to herself," Zahau's sister Mary Zahau-Loehner told ABC News.

The sisters spoke the night before Zahau died, she said, and Rebecca talked about her plans for the following day.

"She was going to call mom and dad the next morning and text me throughout the day with updates on Max," said Zahau-Loehner. "She was very hopeful. She had to be strong and there for Jonah."

Zahau and Shacknai seemed happy together, her sister said.

"When Max fell on July 11, police received a call from a woman at the mansion who they would not identify, requesting medical aid for Max. Another person, a young female, was also present at the time of the accident, police said."

So is this implying ANOTHER woman was there besides Rebecca and Max's half sister? Or are they just not wanting to say that this woman was Rebecca?

Here's the video taped interview with the Memphis neighbor.
http://www.wmctv.com/story/15091608...others-san-diego-mansion?clienttype=printable

What makes this curious is why he said he was going back to work on the tugboat. It sounds like he got home from work Monday, got a message from JS about Max, and jumped on the next plane to San Diego. It's not unusual that he would travel to San Diego when his nephew suffered a grave injury. Why lie?

ABC News conducted a vary interesting interview with him (probably Friday or Saturday). He said he spoke to Adam, who was being interviewed by police, but said he wasn't involved with RS's death. Then the neighbor said something like "with that family I'm really not surprised something like this would happen". Then clammed up.

You'll see where AS lives in downtown Memphis, a 725 sq ft apartment that has seen better days. You'd think his multi-millionaire brother would buy him a friggin house!

The only picture published of Adam was unimpressive, like "not all there", but it could be the grainy quality. I wondered why Memphis? He graduated from George Washington U in DC, and works on a tugboat? His brother couldn't line up a job for him? I now think he doesn't want anything from his brother.

I can't say I'm not worried either. Would his own brother set him up? JS hasn't been back since the accident. If he's at all involved with RN's death, he sure implicated his brother.

I must be naive, because I didn't see JS for what he is. Don't travel in those circles! People with his money usually inherit it, not go from "average" to filthy rich. I got my answer when I saw he was in politics in his early years. I thought people who trashed him on the message boards were envious, but I see differently as this mystery unravels. No word of sorrow about losing his gf of 2 years, that's a cold man.

:waitasec: I'm a tad confused as to why a wealthy man should support his brother?

In my experience, no matter how much or what you give to some family members...it's NEVER enough and unappreciated and a cut off becomes necessary.

Hi Everybody - such a tragic story. I'm having a hard time with the suicide issue, myself.

This is a REMINDER that LINKS need to be provided, especially when quoting. I am seeing posts about articles and videos, without links. This makes it very hard for the rest of us sleuths to verify or review the information. Please remember your LINKS. They are very important when discussing the facts of the case.

Thanks

Salem

Welcome, Obmama! I've seen your posts at sign on. I read a lot there, but post rarely due to the juvenile or hostile nature of a lot of the posters.

I was watching Fox News this morning and they began showing some of the DV paperwork for DS and JS in their divorce. I noticed two other female names on one set of paperwork...older sisters of Max? Does anyone know if there were other siblings of that marriage?

Can you expound on how you came to your personality profile?

A wealthy rich married man, no doubt a serial womanizer is ,mana,from heaven for a lot of woman. I do not think the fact people found Rebecca attractive with a nice ...one might even say sweet personality is contradictive of her being ambitious. In fact,she had a please a man with an ego the size of a small republic. I imagine she had to be very accommodating to JS. Now,I do believe to deal with the dynamics of a married man living with his wife and other inconvenient obstacles to become the significant other of JS ...requires more brass than I could ever conjure up. I just do not believe for a moment Rebecca would choose in in a fit of depression to stage her death in the manner we have read. But, as I have said, I have been wrong before and perhaps Rebecca did commit suicide in the manner described by LE.:truce:

I know this seems obvious, but I would assume in this suicide scenario she definitely would have left a note. Begging for forgiveness (if she committed suicide it would have been because she felt remorse for Max's accident) and saying goodbye. Not everyone who commits suicide leaves a note - I know that. But in this situation, I would say it would be a given.

I'm not being snarky or righteous here - but, if this "friend" is stating RN wouldn't commit suicide because she was a Christian (that is the slant I took from that comment), RN wouldn't have broken up her marriage or another marriage when she met JS or would have lived in sin if she was that concerned with her Christianity.

Wouldn't ya roll her over? Who would lay her face down???? IMO The person that killed her.

Don't know how she ended up face down, if the paramedics tried to revive her.

Someone thought the Fire Dept. reported her as "alive" when they got there. The media coverage seemed to infer so, perhaps a misinterpretation of EMT's efforts. I don't know standard protocol for revival efforts.

I think what caused confusion was how she was described.
"In distress" by AS when he called 911. Odd way of putting it.
It suggests she was alive when he cut her down, and administered CPR until medics arrived and took over.

Heroic effort! When I heard he did CPR, he got my vote of innocence! I mean, who would try to kill someone, then revive them so they can talk? His life saving effort could also be a big show, to remove suspicion. There aren't enough details to determine. Seems a slim chance she'd still be breathing, with all the tasks he had to perform, especially if he had to get to the balcony.

Whoever masterminded this has everybody scratching their head. LE appears confident they'll have answers when the forensic investigation is complete. They're talking DNA. Well, if AS did CPR, his DNA would be all over her.

Yeah, I wouldn't give any high marks to AS for the CPR. It could have just been a show, or perhaps he didn't even do it and said he did.

The thing that gets me about this is they're right across the street from the beach. If it was murder (and they wanted it to look like suicide), just take her body down to the beach.

~~~~Bolded by me
But if it was murder, and they wanted to make it look like a suicide, why would they have left the bindings on her hands and feet? Those bindings are what most certainly have raised suspicions of foul play, much more than seeing an unbound woman in such a position.
Hi everyone!
I don't post too often, but I found this case very intriguing and sad.
If you look at the video in this link: http://abcnews.go.com/US/spreckels-mansion-hanging-suicide-sister/story?id=14106680 you will see a much clearer (yet still blurred) picture of the body...it's gruesome, but at least it's blurred. However, I do see what appears to be something blue and quite wide (a scarf???) outside of the blur. Does anyone see that? Does it appear it can be around the neck area to anyone?
I find it strange about the 13 yr old girl being whisked to SC. Conflicting reports of a 13 year old girl at the scene during the 911 call for Max's stair accident and all of a sudden flying to SC. Maybe I am over-thinking it. Maybe the family thought it best to send her away during that time? Maybe the mother of the teenage girl demanded she be sent home asap after hearing about the accident? From what I read JS has two teenagers (a boy and a girl) from a previous marriage....I will try to find the link.
I will be very interested to hear results of the autopsy, if they are made public.
Right now, the "facts" we are working with could be very misleading.
How long was she hanging before she was cut down?
We don't know if she was hanging right side up, (by her neck), or upside down, (from her ankles). Her feet were bound, but not bound together. Police say she wasn't hog-tied, so I guess that rules out either hand being bound to either foot. Were her feet tied to the railing?
I wonder...did someone leave her tied up and naked to humiliate her? Could she have accidentally hung herself while trying to escape while still partially bound?
She was found early in the morning, naked. Was she accosted while in the shower?
Could this crime have been committed by a juvenile or a woman?
Did someone involved in stepmom's death call their lawyer after high-tailing it away from the crime scene? Did that person not realize that the brother was in the guest house and might come inside the main house to find the body?
Cell phone records will be highly informative!
1. 6 year old - falls down stairs (when looking at stairs looks like first landing would stop his fall)
2. 6 year old - falls over balcony (what was the position of his body???)
3. girlfriend of 2 years, plus either half sister of 6 year old or someother female also there, but not there soon after????? doesn't make sense, was this other female interviewed????
4. 6 year old passed away (so sad)
5. soon after, girlfriend is found hanging over outside balcony and "cut down" by brother -
6. girlfriend has hands bound behind back
7. girlfriend's feet either bound together or apart
8. ohhhh, girlfriend naked
9. boyfriend has not said anything to public about girlfriend's death...not even, please let me mourn the lost of two of my loved ones......
10. girlfriend's death doesn't sound like a suicide to me - easier ways
11. awaiting forensics/dna......possible sexual encounter that went bad????
12. girlfriend blamed for 6 year old's death????
13. wonder who the "Mr. Baez" of CA is representing
All my own opinions........coverup of a murder to look like a suicide....could work....depending on the jury...........I know sounds unbelievable.....but it has happened on the east coast........why not the west coast
Her opinion was about a person in a different era, different environment. Her emotional well being AFTER "her son" was in death's arms, doesn't represent the same person. It may have damaged their relationship, beyond repair, if she was at all responsible. His silence seems to indicate so.
I glanced at another post that says her family has become uncooperative witnesses. Last week, they were racing to San Diego with promises of public statements. What happened?
And, the ex-husband she's been divorced from a few short months, was surprisingly complimentary of a woman who dumped him for a rich guy. He even said, she changed, wanting a life of luxury, believable after her shoplifting charge for stealing jewelry at Macy's.
But it seems it was an amicable split. She talked to him the week before her death, to make arrangements for a joint credit card! Spousal support? Did Jonah know this?
It irritated me how she referred to his kids as "my son", "my daughter". If I was the ex, I'd be livid if she called my kid her son. His ex's personal assistant stated, in an interview, she was a factor in the break up.
So, I doubt she was joining Max's parents' bedside vigil like she told the kennel owner. Nobody likes putting a beloved pet in a kennel. And they don't board a pet when they'll be no further than 20 minutes from home, or gone only a few hours. That whole deal put my bet on suicide.
P.S. Let me know if I'm breaking any snarky rules. I'm new here!
