The dig is complete, and now the actually physical search is set to begin. SAPD have set up a command post at the site. It's the white truck along with the yellow tent.

Starting Thursday at 7:30 a.m. the San Antonio Police Department is ready to begin sifting through layers of trash in search for possible evidence. in the case.

The police chief has said this will be a very tedious process as the trash will be spread out into rows, and officers will literally walk down that row and go through each and every piece of garbage.

This process could take days -- even weeks. The FBI will also have officers at the landfill Thursday, helping with the search.

Expensive ring may prove Baby Gabriel is alive and adopted, father says

Posted on February 18, 2010 at 8:44 AM
Updated today at 9:07 AM

"Sometimes when they give the baby away for adoption they hand over jewelry to the mother," he said.

McQueary believes that unlike cash, the trail for pawned jewelry is more difficult to trace. He's still trying to figure out who gave her the ring.

The Arizona father said Elizabeth had low-paying jobs. In addition, McQueary said in the two years they lived together he never saw that ring.

The expensive piece of jewelry was allegedly handed over to Johnson's grandfather, Arizona authorities said. However, McQueary said the grandfather denies any knowledge of the ring.

Logan McQueary does not put much stock in claims his son may be a murder victim.

The distraught father bases his belief on several clues he's dug up on his own. The most recent revelation is a $20,000 ruby and diamond ring. She reportedly had it in her pocket when she was arrested.

"I'm gonna keep searching until they prove me wrong," he said. "Gabriel's still out there. He got handed off to somebody, and we're going to find him."

GPS used in Texas landfill search for Baby Gabriel?
2/18/10 Last update 7:45am
<snipped>
As investigators prepare to search a landfill for clues in the disappearance of Baby Gabriel, local landfill experts say it is a very difficult if not impossible task.

Joe Giduci, the Deputy Public Works Director for the City of Phoenix, says that the only way they would search the City’s landfill would be in cooperation with a police investigation. Otherwise finding something that was thrown away is all about timing and luck.

“We did have one woman who threw away $5,000 in cashier’s checks,” Giduci said. “She managed to figure out what truck it went out on and was able to get it back.”

The location of the trash however can be tracked with GPS technology.

Giduci says the GPS technology helps them track where they are in terms of efficiency and can also help them hone in to where trash is located.

There is a slight chance something could be found at one of the City’s two transfer stations but that is difficult as well because trash is moved continuously out of the station throughout the day and could be at the landfill within hours of pickup.

In missing baby Gabriel case, a suspect pleads not guilty
Feb. 18, 2010 12:27 PM

Tammi Peters Smith, the Scottsdale woman implicated in the case of missing baby Gabriel Johnson, entered not-guilty pleas Thursday morning to felony counts of forgery and conspiracy to commit custodial interference in Maricopa County Superior Court.

She remains free on $15,000 bond.

Smith had no comment as she left the courtroom Thursday, but her attorney Amy Nguyen, said that they do not know why Smith has been charged.

"We know it has nothing to do with the disappearance of baby Gabriel," Nguyen said. "It's all speculation at this point. We haven't been given any information by the state."

Nguyen said that Smith was "anxious to get it behind her."

San Antonio police are searching the Tessman Road landfill for Baby Gabriel. Until now, they've been excavating the site, but Thursday they began actually sifting through each piece of garbage looking for a green diaper bag or small suitcase that could contain the baby's body.

After 7 days of digging, phase two began on Thursday morning.

Now 35 people will begin thoroughly examining the garbage, looking for possible evidence. They started work at 7:30 a.m. and they'll work until 6 p.m. Cadaver dogs will also go through the debris.

And his father believes he may have been adopted out in exchange for a $20,000 ring. In this meticulous search, crews are looking for a green diaper bag or a suitcase.

Phase II of search for Baby Gabriel starts
Feb. 18, 2010 05:21 PM
<snipped>
It's been nearly 2 months and the search continues for 9-month old baby Gabriel Johnson. At the same time, Gabriel's father Logan McQueary is getting more help from Valley businesses in his search efforts. On Thursday, McQueary spoke about plans to raise more money to help find his missing son.

"All we want is for Gabriel to be returned and I want my son back," said McQueary.

"I don't feel I should go back to work yet. We're getting a lot of leads and just trying to follow up on," said McQueary.

Meanwhile, San Antonio police removed 45 thousand tons of debris at a local landfill to search for Gabriel. Phase II now begins as dozens of people and cadaver dogs go through the debris.

"That's just in the back of my mind. It doesn't matter to me. I think it needs to be just done and over with and that's what they're doing," said McQueary.
