Analyzing Casey Anthony's family's body language
    "Snip" Central Florida News 13

    Monday, June 06, 2011 5:52 AM

News 13 asked body language expert Susan Constantine for her take.
Constantine said."The fact their family members were there. And so they were meeting it head-on and their mere presence there I think says volumes".

What to watch for during the trial

"Body Language 101" isn't just about watching a gesture and defining what it means.

Here's an interesting fact: We transmit 2,000 silent messages of communication every hour. Every single gesture is based on an emotion inside of us.

Look at facial expressions, voice, and tie that into the content

Forensic Evidence Takes Focus In Casey Case

The Casey Anthony murder trial continues Monday.

"Snip" UPDATED: 7:06 am EDT June 6, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Prosecutors in the case against Casey Anthony will present more forensic evidence as the Anthony murder trial continues Monday.

The prosecution will introduce scientific evidence that could be key to their case. Most of the forensic evidence centers around Anthony's car -- a hair and a stain found in the trunk, traces of chloroform and chloroform were significant pieces of the state's investigation.

Meanwhile, George and Cindy Anthony's attorney, Mark Lippman has sent an 11-page cease and desist letter to Leonard Padilla.

Exclusive: Can Oak Ridge science be trusted in Casey Anthony case?

    "Snip"
    By Adam Longo, Reporter
Last Updated: Monday, June 6, 2011
Originally published Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Oak Ridge scientists prepared a report for the Anthony case. They wrote:

A portion of the total odor signature identified in the Florida trunk vehicle is consistent with a decompositional event that could be of human origin.

Now, turn back the clock before any of us had heard about Anthony.

In early 2008, a cold case detective in California was working with his search dog, "Buster," at the last known hideout for the Manson family.

15 minutes into the search, Buster had an alert,” said Sgt. Paul Dostie, from Mammoth Lakes, California, Police Department.
Dostie took soil samples from five different sites and set them to the scientists at the Oak Ridge lab.

In the report, which we obtained exclusively, Dr. Arpad Vass, from Oak Ridge, writes:

We feel that sufficient evidence exists to warrant further investigation of several of these sites.

His conclusions of the five sites were that two were likely and two were possible clandestine grave sites.

"Normal procedure is to follow up the alert with other technologies like GPR, like magnetometers, like soil measurements," said Vass.

Expert: Chloroform Levels In Casey's Trunk 'Shocking'

Researcher Testifies About Air In Trunk Of Car

Vass gave jurors in the trial a crash course in the stages of human decomposition.

    UPDATED: 1:22 pm EDT June 6, 2011

Forensic testing on a carpet sample from Casey's trunk showed the presence of chloroform at a level that was "shockingly high," a scientist testified Monday in her capital murder trial.

Laser-based testing also seemed to indicate that decomposition had occurred in the trunk, as it showed high levels of inorganic elements such as calcium. Such inorganic elements are consistent with a decomposing body, Vass testified.

Prosecutors allege Anthony used chloroform on Caylee and suffocated her by putting duct tape over the little girl's mouth and nose.

Vass' testimony was frequently punctuated by objections from Baez, nearly all of them were overruled by Judge Perry.

Expert: Tests Show Body Was In Trunk Of Casey's Car

Casey On Trial: Air Tests Expert Testifies On Day 22
Chloroform Levels In Casey's Car Leave Experts "Shocked"

"Snip" Updated: 7:20 pm EDT June 6, 2011

A researcher testified on Monday that he can detect human decomposition in the air from Casey's trunk on day 22 of her murder trial.
Arpad Vass, a researcher at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, was the first witness called on Monday on day 22 of Casey's trial.
The state is also expected to call its computer expert to testify about computer searches from Casey’s home, including the words chloroform and neck breaking.
Prosecutor Jeff Ashton asked Vass to describe the difference between the smell of human decomposition and animal decomposition.
"Animals tend to have a more muskier scent. Domesticated animals like a pig have a much sweeter scent than humans," Vass replied.

    Day 11: Defense Subpoena

'Shocking' Chloroform Levels In Casey's Trunk researcher Testifies About Air In Trunk Of Car

"Snip" UPDATED: 5:27 pm EDT June 6, 2011

    Defense Subpoena

Defense's attempt to subpoena Vass' database ended quickly Monday after an objection from prosecutors.

Baez attempted to subpoena Vass earlier in the day.

After proceedings concluded for the day, prosecutor Jeff Ashton objected and argued that Vass was exempt from the subpoena since he was present under an interstate subpoena from Tennessee.

The defense then voluntarily withdrew the subpoena, but indicated it wanted to call Vass as an expert witness of its own after the state had rested.

Trial proceedings continue at 9 a.m. Tuesday June 7.

On examining samples from Casey Anthony's car

Casey Anthony trial:Video Casey Air sample chart explained http://www.cfnews13.com/video?clip=http://static.cfnews13.com/newsvideo/cfn/CarpetExamWEB060611.flv

Vass said Detective Yuri Melich first contacted him to analyze the trunk of Casey's car. He sent the Orange County Sheriff's Office air pumps, or "traps," to collect air samples from the trunk, and later received a plastic bag with the samples in it.

He said he used a device called a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer to analyze the samples and detect human composition. He said they also looked into an older car taken from a junk yard for comparison as a "control" vehicle.

Vass said he and his team identified 51 chemical components from the carpet of the car trunk. Of those, 41 were consistent with human decomposition, including butyric acid, the first compound found in human decomposition, in the carpet.

He also said there was a "shockingly high" level of chloroform found in the air sample, saying he had never seen that in his 20 years of work. Prosecutors showed the jury a graph, asking Vass to point out a peak showing the level of chloroform found in the carpet sample.

Vass recalled jumping back after opening the can of air. He said he could not believe such a tiny can could contain such a strong odor. He went on to say the odor was consistent with what he knows to be the smell of human decomposition, and went as far as to say he could not think of anything other than a dead and decomposing body that would explain the results he got from the samples he analyzed.

During cross-examination, he did admit did not know the chemical breakdown of items in the trash found in Casey's car. But Vass said if you eliminate all the overlapping compounds from the trash and gasoline from George Anthony's gas cans, there were still 10 compounds consistent with decomposition.
