Hundreds of wrecks blamed on icy conditions
Austin police responded to 410 accidents from midnight until 11 a.m. Sunday.

Sunday morning, Central Texas roads were littered with wrecked cars

This accident on the I-35 exit ramp at 290 involved 18 cars.

Officials blamed icy conditions for more than four hundred wrecks in Austin alone.
"They were still trying to add up the numbers,” Mike Frick, battalion chief with Austin Fire Department, said. “It was substantial. They were estimating between two and three times the normal call volume."

They showed a few accidents while they were happening, on TV, and it was drivers standing on their brakes, rather than steering the car away from the accident, that caused the accidents. If you grow up with snow & ice, you never forget how to drive in it.

Well, I'm here in Austin but I didn't even notice that much ice. I did read about it in the paper. They don't know how to drive at all here in ice or snow.

My car was glazed over, but the sidewalk and driveway were fine. My kids were really hoping to grab some cookie sheets and go sledding, but it was just enough ice on the bridges and overpasses (and some areas on the streets) to cause a mess. Nope, we don't do well driving on ice.....we rarely get snow, usually ice.

Ice is a very rare occurance & we have miles and miles of overpasses and bridges and road crews can be too slow to get out sand and gravel. You would be hard pressed to even find snow tires or chains here. Not enough accumulation to make them very effective anyway.

lmao..your right actually! I lived in Texas for 7 years (45 mins from Austin) as soon as a cool chill hits the air the local Home Depots and Lowes runs out of portable heaters and such its soooo funny to watch these people. You go into any resturant in the area and alls people are talking about is did you hear? Tomorrow night we are gonna get some really bad weather''...it's hilarious.

lol that's funny about the heaters. It's almost as bad as around here when people hear the word snow grocery stores are automatically completely out of milk and bread. It's not like it was back in the day when you were completely snowed in for a few days lol.
