NEW YORK — A school bus overturned on a Bronx (search) expressway Friday, injuring more than 50 adults and children, authorities said.

Scores of emergency workers responded to the crash scene on the Major Deegan Expressway (search), where the bus was on its side, seat cushions tossed about and smashed glass everywhere.

Most of the children had made it out of the bus by the time rescuers arrived; firefighters went through windows to pull the rest to safety. Some of the children were strapped onto boards for transportation to hospitals.

No critical injuries were reported, and Fire Chief Thomas Dunne described the majority of the injured children as "walking wounded." Officials at three Bronx hospitals — Montefiore, North Bronx and Jacobi — were expecting victims. In all, 46 children and eight adults were injured.
