#NEW: A former FBI digital evidence instructor testifies for the defense and says she believes wired headphones, or some sort of auxiliary chord, was plugged into Libby German’s phone between 5:45 p.m. on Feb. 13, 2017 to 10:32 p.m. that same day. We’re updating our blog with more info from that testimony.

4:18 PM · Nov 5, 2024

4:11 P.M.

Court is back in session at 1:47 p.m. The state says the next defense witness is a phone expert and they request that two previous witnesses who examined Libby’s phone be able to sit in the court room for rebuttal purposes.

The jury is back in the court room at 1:52 p.m. The defense calls Stacy Eldridge. Eldridge is an expert in computer information management. She worked for the FBI for nearly 10 years as a forensic examiner and later a senior examiner. She also worked as an instructor on digital evidence.

Eldridge says she left the FBI and is now a license private detective in Nebraska. She tells the jury she used to have a license in Cellbrite, the software used to forensically examine cell phones.

Hold the phone!! Wait just a minute!!!

I dropped one of my phones in water a few years ago. After that it registerd as tho my wire earplugs were in but they weren't!!! I could never get it fixed I had to get a new phone.

Libby's phone could have traversed through the creek and or had been laying in wet blood.

Nope, no way, no how... I'm not falling for this!

This is just a real thing that can happen to cell phones...

This testimony that a cord of some kind was plugged in to Libby's phone is intriguing....I'll have to wait and see what folks say about this one!
Not necessarily. As I said up above, I

This is insanity. It was clearly from water damage. What is the defense’s theory, that they kidnapped two girls for a ritual sacrifice and decided to listen to some of their music on the drive? I sincerely hope the prosecution is able to cross effectively on this, because the entire scenario is just absolutely ridiculous.

Excellent post! I read it after I replied to steeltown and said WOW!

Unbelievable the things that are being thrown about in this trial. Throw mud, cast doubt, offer no truth.

My guess is they're going to try to imply that the photos and the video of RA/BG from that day were somehow manipulated and placed on the Libby's phone.

Which, yeah, no.

A very quick Google search by me shows that this is actually quite common. Let's hope the P knows that.

Wow, I’d say this jury knows guns!

Court is back in session at 11:31 a.m. There have been delays in getting the pool notes from Delphi today.

At 12:24 p.m., the jury began their questions of Warren:
  1. How would CMS or objective testing be used? Pool notes do not show an answer.
  2. Would removing, cleaning, disassembling change individual characteristics of a firearm? Warren says, “no, only if there was some sort of damage.”
  3. Do you know if manufacturer keeps track of sub-class? Warren says, “no, they don’t.”
  4. Pool notes do not transcribe a question, but Warren says, “my role here was to educate attorneys on what documentation was and see if it supported the concession.”
  5. Would doing your own analysis have been more conclusive? Warren says, “hard to say.”
  6. Is CMS criteria the gold standard? Pool notes do not indicate an answer.
  7. Are you a certified firearm and tool mark examiner? No answer in pool notes.
  8. Would individual markings be different depending on who cycles? Warren says, “documentation of Oberg does not support conclusion.”
  9. Did you look at the sub-class marks of the cartridge? Pool notes do not show an answer.
  10. What is the relevance of cartridges having similar sub-class characteristics? Warren says, “Depends on if it is from manufacturing or cycling.”
  11. Are sequential serial numbers made in the same lot? Warren says, “generally accepted that close serial numbers have parts made at similar times, but may be in different lots.”
  12. Are you aware that Oberg’s conclusion was unfired by another expert? Warren says yes.
  13. Are you aware Allen’s gun’s ejector was recessed and had similar markings to markings made on the cartridge? Pool notes do not indicate an answer.
  14. Is it normal practice to not issue a report when consulting? Warren says yes.
  15. Wha are the chances that the cartridge at the scene matches the test bullets? Warren says, “higher likelihood of guns just in Indiana.”
The court is in recess and breaks for lunch at 12:42 p.m.
What are “pool notes” and why aren’t they answered? TIA

Based on more detailed reporting, I'm thinking you are spot on:

Plugging the phone in prevented sound from coming out of the device, Eldridge said, and there was an unanswered incoming call milliseconds before the cable was inserted.

Or just claim it means the girls left and were returned later that night. Maybe. There was so much thrown at the wall it is hard to imagine which direction this is headed.

Oh boy. In comes the conspiracy theory that someone used a wired device to upload the BG photo to Libby’s phone.

jmo
Careful, you might wind up being the original source for this new rumor.

It’s all very odd either way. No more steps after 2:32 (? IIRC) but getting plugged into something well after the State’s own timeline has them deceased.
