Conspiracy theory hat on: to stop it ringing out loud and alerting search parties to the location. That actually would be pretty smart - since the phone was locked and couldn't be put into airplane mode to stop calls coming to it.

Not sure how they could connect a set of headphones without significantly moving the phone (or Abby) and without leaving prints.

But then - if someone really wanted to tamper with the phone - Abby and Libby are right there to try unlocking it with fingerprints.

Good point, about the killer not wanting to be tracked by taking the phone away.
That is a good idea on the phone not ringing out loud if headphones are plugged in and if the headphones were left there then I could believe the killer did that for that reason. I just can't think of a reason the killer would sit in the woods with the girls until 6pm or why they would come back at that time to do that AND then take the headphones with them? I would expect if they did that so the phone wouldn't ring, then they just would have left them there.

We’re assuming the ringer is on? Go through all that, use the victim’s thumb & not delete the video? The tin foil hat might be a bit too tight. ;)

More testimony from Harshman

Once the calls were played in court, McLeland asked Harshman about his investigation. Harshman described Allen’s demeanor as “subdued” and “solemn” during the calls. He testified Allen used the same tone and speech patterns as other calls and said there was no indication he was under stress.

Harshman examined a report from Dr. Monica Wala that included Allen’s confession. Allen had said he visited his mother and declined a lunch invitation. He then went home, grabbed a coat and drank three beers.

He told Wala he saw the girls on the trail and followed them with the intent to rape them. He ordered them down the hill and messed with his gun, which is when he believed the bullet found at the crime scene may have been ejected. He said a van startled him, prompting him to panic, take the girls across Deer Creek and kill them.

Harshman thought the van detail was notable. He wasn’t aware of it, so he conducted further investigation. He went through old reports and learned about Brad Weber, who testified Wednesday and owns property across from the murder scene. Harshman said the old reports didn’t mention Weber’s van or what type of van he drove on the day of the murders.

He didn’t think it was general public knowledge.

Harshman talked to Weber and developed a timetable. He knew Libby German’s phone stopped moving at 2:32 p.m. on Feb. 13, 2017. He found out Weber clocked out of work at 2:02 p.m. and it would take 20 to 25 minutes for him to get home.

Weber would use North 625 West, taking him past the murder scene. Harshman believed—and Weber testified as much—that Weber would have been in the area between 2:28 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., which lines up with the state’s murder timeline.

Allen gave the detailed confession to Wala in May 2023. Harshman didn’t read the report until August 2024.

The “Bridge Guy” video from Libby German’s phone was again played in court. Harshman testified that he believed the voice from the video was Allen’s.

Does seem risky. Perhaps if they were still at the scene when search parties were approaching - desperate ? And then worried that the headphones being a personal item would carry DNA.

I still think moisture is more likely.

I am curious if defense will say RA is NOT the man in the BG photo in their closing arguments. If he admitted it to them and they know that he is, they can’t lie about it, right? Or can they?
They'll likely say no witnessed identified RA as BG.

The significance of Libby's brave recording is valuable for so many other reasons. One, IMO RA cannot be excluded...

But most significant, her video locks the time and location of the abduction. If reveals a lone man, not inconsistent with what RA said he was wearing and where he said he was.

It is huge corroborating evidence.

Then her health app tells more of the story. Minutes. Steps. Change in elevation. Which is then corroborate by RA's own admissions, further corroborate by BW's activity that day. (BW didn't know what was significant about his decisions that day, what to drive, when to go home, which house to visit first. Only RA tied that together, it was the event that forced the elevation change, across the creek, and lends itself to the chaotic scene left behind.)

Had the creek claimed her phone, how much evidence could have been lost...

The evidence, the witnesses, the confessions -- they all line up.

May the jury have the same clarity.

There’s a physical switch on the side of the phone that does this, and would be far more logical than digging out headphones and plugging them in luckily milliseconds after a call started coming in.

Water was in the port. Phone vibrated from the call. In the milliseconds thereafter, the water shifted enough from the vibration to affect the headphone sensor.

Just my opinion.

According to Wala's testimony that day, Allen confessed he saw the girls on the trails, followed them across the bridge, and mentioned doing something with his gun, which she said is how the cartridge could've gotten there.

Wala claims Allen then said he ordered the girls down the hill, across the creek, wanted to sexually assault them but didn't, cut their necks, made sure they were dead, covered bodies with branches, stayed off the trails to leave and not be seen, then continued to live his life normally ever since.

Wala believed Allen appeared to be normal during the time of confession and showed signs of being relieved after his statement.

@cathyrusson

It's ridiculous. The judge caused more of a circus by not allowing cameras. Media and public having to sleep out overnight to get seat.

I don't think she really had a choice considering all of the shenanigans going on. She had to do what she had to do to protect the jury from the madness.

When someone tells you details such as that, believe them. moo

Water could evaporate especially, underneath the recently unalived body of child.

But that unalive child's clothing was apparently wet and the temperature would have dropped through the night.

Unless the phone was higher up on the body so it didn't get too wet - like tucked in a bra perhaps when crossing the creek.

Added information.

True, but the dirt or water clearing in such a short time doesn't make sense either. Especially when people have to look up how to clear it on Google.

Question: Can you explain that more so I have a better understanding - about the clearing part of it and all.

I think, and someone please correct me if I am wrong as there is a lot of misinformation out there, that the phone was found in Libby's shoe under Abby's body?

Maybe, when Libby was forced to undress, she hid the phone in the shoe? So it got a little wet/dirty but the fabric of the shoe may have helped dry it out? Were the shoes taken off when the girls crossed the creek?

I can't remember if the phone was found in the shoe so if that is wrong, please disregard this whole post.

OH MY GOODNESS! I take 36 hours away for family stuff and I come back to closing arguments!

Crazy whiplash - Can I get a quick debrief of yesterday? Is it going yo jury today?!?
Yesterday morning, when court opened, the Defense rested. It caught the Prosecution, Judge, and Jury off guard. Today is closing arguments.

It was testified to that Libby's phone was under one of Libby's shoes under Abby's body.

I have heard both as well.

Was it in the FM that her phone was IN the shoe? It was stated somewhere because I know I read it.
