All nine people aboard an Alaska sightseeing float plane have been confirmed dead after the plane crashed near Ketchikan in southeast Alaska, Thursday. Tour operators Promech Air have released a statement saying there are no survivors although the wreckage hasn't yet been reached.

The eight passengers were all tourists from a Holland America Line cruise ship, taking a tour of the Misty Fjords.

Wreckage has been spotted by helicopter on a remote granite cliff face but initial recovery attempts have been hampered by bad weather and rough terrain. The operation continues. Names of victims have not yet been released.
