GUILTY AK - Ashley Johnson-Barr, 10, Kotzebue, 6 Sep 2018 *Arrest*

From the link:

The courtroom was standing-room only, filled with what appeared to be many members of law enforcement and others who spent eight days searching for Ashley in Kotzebue.

The outcome of the hearing: Wilson will be kept in jail -- there's another hearing scheduled for Friday, which will be either a preliminary hearing or an arraignment. The grand jury will meet this week, and an indictment is expected by Thursday, the prosecutor said in court.

So why is the case in federal court? There are many angles to the involvement of federal prosecutors, the FBI says. The FBI can investigate kidnappings, which it did in this case. The FBI can also be called to assist with a violent crime in a public place. The cell phone Ashley carried before she went missing is considered an instrument of interstate commerce – a federally-regulated activity. But while all that points to the FBI’s investigation, it’s allegedly lying to a federal agent that landed Peter Wilson in federal court.

HOW A TYPICAL CRIMINAL CASE IS PROSECUTED IN ALASKA

"Grand Jury – In Alaska, the grand jury is an independent investigative and accusatory body consisting of 18 citizens who are selected at random from voting, hunting, fishing, PFD and similar rosters. They generally serve for a period of 90 days. Their function is to act as a filter between the government and the people who are governed in order to decide whether sufficient credible evidence exists to require a person to stand trial on a felony charge. If a person is charged with a misdemeanor instead of a felony, their case will not be presented to a grand jury. Instead, a prosecutor files a “Complaint” or “Information” which alleges the crime. Since the issue before the grand jury is not the final question regarding the guilt or innocence of the accused, but simply the probability of guilt, the standard of proof which must be sustained by the prosecutor is considerably less than that required to convict by the trial jury."

"Peter Wilson told authorities that he found the cellphone of a missing 10-year-old girl lying in the street. In reality, he took the phone directly from her, according to a federal grand jury indictment Wednesday.

The grand jury handed up the indictment against Wilson, 41, charging him with one count of lying to the FBI. The indictment became public Thursday."

Hundreds of well-wishers turn out as Ashley Johnson-Barr returned to Kotzebue

Family and friends of 10-year-old Ashley Johnson-Barr gathered at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport Thursday to pay tribute to the slain girl and her family, while her casket was loaded onto a Ravn Alaska flight bound for Kotzebue.

When the girl's father, Walter "Scotty" Barr, walked into the Ravn terminal Thursday afternoon, he found it filled end to end with hundreds of friends, family and coworkers. He went down the entire line, hugging every single person.

Ashley Menapace of Ravn Alaska says his embrace was reassuring.

"Just being here today and getting a hug from him,” Menapace said. “That reassured me today we're all family, even from miles away."

Menapace says Barr’s actions were remarkable expressions of love, made by a grieving father.

"It was so moving,” Menapace said. “I have never seen something like that, honestly. Not in a place of work, or outside of work. We might not have all known him, but it was like a personal family experience. It felt like I was part of his family today."

When it came time to escort Ashley Johnson-Barr's casket onto the plane, attendees filed outside and made a line on either side of the tarmac.

The casket — purple like Ashley's favorite color — was slowly lifted into the plane as family members watched before boarding the plane.

"She's going home," Menapace said. "She's going to where her family is, and she's going to be at rest finally."

A funeral and potluck were held in Kotzebue Saturday in honor of Ashley Johnson-Barr.

An obituary given to mourners at the funeral said the fifth-grade student "absolutely loved playing basketball and played every day she was able." Johnson-Barr also loved jumping into the ocean off Front Street, picking berries with her mom and looking after her niece Raylin.

It has not been released yet. We may know more in the affidavit when they charge him with murder (I hope).
I have been searching and can't find anything on how she died, I remembered this, the family wanted to wait until Ashley's funeral was over:

"John Skidmore, the criminal division director for the state Department of Law, says Ashley's family asked that any further legal action be held off until after the girl's funeral Saturday. He declined to say if the state charges would be filed against Wilson."

I apologize if I caused any confusion. Right now he’s only charged with lying to LE. That trial is set to begin in November.

Since that affidavit (for lying to LE) contained allegations that he took the phone directly from Ashley and it pinged at the spot where LE discovered her body, I thought they would soon be charging him with her murder. LE has not said anything about it. I was just hoping and thinking aloud. Sorry!
