His attorney told a federal judge Monday that the aim is to resolve the case short of trial, that the parties hope to reach agreement on a plea and avert trial.

His attorney says both parties are hoping to reach a plea agreement to avoid trial. In court filings, they indicate they sought an expert to examine his mental state at the time of his wife's death, which they believe is a critical component to the resolution of the case. The judge has pushed the proposed trial date from May to a tentative date in September to give parties more time to reach a potential resolution.

Looks like they are STILL going for a plea deal....

Prosecutors seeking plea deal for St. George man accused of killing wife on cruise ship

    June 16, 2019
ST. GEORGE — A plea deal appears to be in the works from federal prosecutors in the case of a man accused of killing his wife on a cruise ship.
    [.....]
According to court documents filed Friday in U.S. District Court of Alaska, federal prosecutors asked that upcoming deadlines in Manzanares’ case be cancelled.

“A modification of the pre-trial deadlines is necessary in this matter as the parties still do not anticipate a trial in this case and are actively working towards a negotiated resolution in this matter,” assistant U.S. attorney Jack Schmidt wrote in a motion to expedite.
    [.....]
Due to federal prosecutors asking for deadlines to be cancelled, it’s unclear whether the trial set for Sept. 9 will take place.

Manzanares’ attorneys didn’t object to cancelling the upcoming deadlines. In February, it was reported that his attorneys were also seeking a plea deal, and a trial that was formerly set for May 2019 was cancelled.

@Seattle1 - I don't have PACER, so wondering if you could look at the court site & see if they have any future court dates scheduled? TIA! :)

Southern Utah man charged with murdering wife on cruise ship may receive plea deal | Gephardt Daily

JUNEAU, Alaska, June 15, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Federal court documents suggest that attorneys in the first-degree murder case of Kenneth Manzanares — the Utah man charged in the 2017 beating death of his wife, Kristy Manzanares, on an Alaskan cruise ship — are negotiating a plea deal.

Federal court documents filed Friday and obtained by Gephardt Daily show that prosecutor Bryan Schroder, Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Alaska, has filed for a motion of “expedited consideration.”

“A modification of the pre-trial deadlines is necessary in this matter as the
parties still do not anticipate a trial in this case and are actively working towards a
negotiated resolution in this matter,” Schroder’s request says.

“I have contacted the defendant’s counsel, Jamie McGrady, and she does
not oppose the United States request for filing on shortened time.”

The trial had been set for October of this year, and was expected to last about four weeks, federal court documents say. Manzanares had pleaded not guilty in the first-degree murder case. If convicted on that charge, he would face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

No details of any plea deal have been announced.

Plea deal in the works for a Utah man accused of killing his wife on a cruise ship near Alaska

In court documents obtained by FOX 13, federal prosecutors ask for upcoming deadlines in the case of Kenneth Manzanares to be stricken.

“A modification of the pre-trial deadlines is necessary in this matter as the
parties still do not anticipate a trial in this case and are actively working towards a
negotiated resolution in this matter,” assistant U.S. Attorney Jack Schmidt wrote.

Defense attorneys also did not object to striking the deadlines. A previous trial date for Manzanares set for May was canceled. No new trial date has been set.

Defense had pretrial motions due by August 12, and looks like they filed notice of intent to change plea today -- next court date requested for November but no date.

Defense working on plea deal since Feb 2019 so no surprise - court will oblige.

I'll wait a couple days and see of court files response with date.

Best outcome for all here. MOO

St. George man to take plea deal in wife’s murder aboard cruise ship, lawyer says

A St. George man accused of killing his wife aboard a cruise ship near Alaska intends to take a plea deal, his attorney said in a court filing.

Kenneth Manzanares plans to change his plea, his attorney, Rich Curtner, wrote in a filing in federal court in Alaska and obtained by FOX 13.

“The parties are in the process of finalizing the details of a plea, and request a change of plea date in early November at a time convenient to the Court,” he wrote.

Federal prosecutors recently asked for upcoming court deadlines to be stricken, hinting that a plea deal was in the works.

Manzanares is accused of killing his wife, Kristy, aboard the “Emerald Princess” in 2017. She had been beaten to death inside her cabin, prosecutors said. FBI agents wrote in affidavits that witnesses had reported seeing blood in the room and Kristy Manzanares had a severe head wound. Kenneth Manzanares reportedly said “she would not stop laughing at me,” authorities alleged in filings. Passengers aboard the ship had reported hearing the couple fighting.

Attorneys for St. George man accused of killing wife on cruise ship file notice to change plea

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Attorneys for a St. George man accused of killing his wife on a cruise to Alaska in 2017 have filed a notice of intent to change his plea.

Kenneth Manzanares pleaded not guilty in August 2017 after he was indicted in the death of his wife, Kristy. People surrounding the couple’s cabin on the cruise ship reported hearing loud screaming, and a family member who found Kristy Manzanares’ body reported she saw Kenneth Manzanares drag her body toward a balcony on the ship.

When both federal prosecutors and Kenneth Manzanares’ attorneys met in November 2017, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Alaska stated it would not seek the death penalty if he was convicted.

The Associated Press reported Tuesday that Manzanares’ attorneys, in a filing with a federal court, said the parties involved in the case are working to finalize the details of a plea agreement. They asked for a court date in November.

Utah man to change plea in wife's Alaskan cruise death

According to new court filings, "the parities are in the process of finalizing the details of the plea" and hope to change the plea date to early November.

The couple originally booked an Alaskan cruise to celebrate their anniversary.

    [...]

FBI Special Agent Michael Watson stated in an affidavit that witnesses saw Manzanares with blood on his hands and clothing. He even told one witness that his wife "would not stop laughing at me," Watson recalled.

While the FBI was searching the room, Manzanares reportedly said “my life is over”

At the time of the murder, the cruise ship was about seven miles away from the coast of Forrester Island, placing it inside U.S. Federal jurisdiction.

Manzanares was later indicted and pleaded not guilty to the murder.

His trial was rescheduled for May 20, 2019 and was expected to last four weeks. However, the trial was delayed until September by U.S. District Court Judge Timonthy Burgess in order to give both parities time to talk.

In February, Manzanares' attorney told the Associated Press that both parities want to reach an agreement and avoid a trial.
