HEALY, Alaska (KTUU) – A 2-year-old boy was found locked in an abandoned car outside of Healy Thursday morning, according to a dispatch from the Alaska State Police.

At 1:31 a.m. Thursday, deputies received a report of an abandoned car approximately 6.8 miles up Stampede Trail with a child locked inside.

Cops located the car and child and the child was taken to Healy and later turned over to the Office of Children’s Services. Soldiers said the boy appeared to be in good health.

Based on evidence at the scene, officers believe the child and car were abandoned two days earlier, on July 12.

Agents are now searching for the boy’s grandmother, Mary Dawn Wilson, 69, in the area around where the car was found. Wilson is the last person known to have been with the boy.

Anyone with information on where Wilson is is asked to call troopers at 907-451-5100.

Couldn't it be the GPS in the car, given it was newer? I'm curious if the windows were up or down. Wouldn't the oxygen run out at some point?

Also, just because the car was left 2 days ago, doesn't mean grandma did. That could be why baby seemed alright for the most part.

Kind of weird parents of the child is not mentioned at all.
When your 2-year old is being taken care of by someone else, you obviously call and text that person to make sure everything’s alright - at least once a day. Preferably more, since 2 years is not much. The article says the child was handed over to social services, not the mom or dad. I’m assuming that means they didn’t have custody or has reported the little guy missing.
 
Troopers received a report of the abandoned 2016 Ford Focus with the child inside around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, they said. They estimated the car had sat abandoned since Tuesday because there were no footprints leading from it and a heavy rain came through the area about two days before.

Mary Dawn Wilson started walking in a direction that led away from the Parks Highway after the vehicle became stuck, troopers in an update Friday afternoon. Personal items believed to belong to Wilson were found about a mile up the trail.

The child was taken to Healy before being placed in the care of the state Office of Children’s Services in what appeared to be good health, troopers said. She was later released to her mother once she was located.

Wilson had agreed to watch the girl for several days, according to a missing persons bulletin issued Friday. Relatives told troopers they consider the woman the child’s grandmother, a spokesman said. She was watching the child while the mother worked in rural Alaska at a mine.

Wilson was last seen Tuesday morning at a friend’s home near Healy, the bulletin states.

The area where the car got stuck is remote, with the nearest home about 3 miles away, troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain said.


The search for Wilson on Friday included village public safety officers, members of Solstice Search Dogs, Mat-Su Search and Rescue, Alaska Wilderness Search and Rescue, a troopers helicopter and troopers.

Oh no. Car stuck & she walks into the wilderness? Very worrisome. So glad the child is back with her mother. I hope the grandmother is found soon. I wonder why she was traveling in that remote area?

Officials said evidence in the car indicated that the child and car were abandoned Tuesday when the vehicle became stuck, troopers said. There were indications she tried to free the car, Alaska State Troopers spokesperson Tim DeSpain said.

Wilson was the last known person with the child, the statement said,

Troopers said it’s believed she started walking, but in the opposite direction from the highway. Various law enforcement agencies, search dogs and the Alaska Wilderness Search and Rescue organization are looking for her near where the vehicle stopped.

UPDATE: July 15, 2022, the search for Mary Wilson off the Stampede Trail near Healy is continuing. It is believed that on Tuesday July 12 when Mary’s vehicle became stuck, she began walking in a direction heading further away from the Parks Highway. Personal items believed to belong to Mary were located at approximately 7.8 mile of the Stampede Trail.

Village Public Safety Officer’s, members of Solstice Search Dogs, Mat-Su Search & Rescue, Alaska Wilderness Search & Rescue, Alaska State Troopers, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, AST Helo 2, and volunteers are actively searching the surrounding area from the vehicle’s location.

Volunteers that would like to participate in the search should check-in at the Stampede Road staging area in Healy and anticipate inclement weather and insects.
