Old death still under investigation

MEDFORD — When Maureen Bedell was promoted to Oregon State Police lieutenant, she left behind one unsolved case: the 2001 murder of Butte Falls resident Blanche Campbell.

Now, her successor is on a mission to solve the story of Campbell, 80, whose body was found May 8, 2001, in the burned rubble of her rural home.

Oregon State Police Detective Deanna Harris, who took over for Bedell, has 11 binders filled with reports, interviews and other evidence in the Campbell murder, but she is scouring for more clues.

Investigators have said Campbell’s house was set ablaze to cover up her murder. Police have never released the cause of death or named any suspects.

Neighbors spotted the fire about 4:40 a.m. and tried to get in to help Campbell, a widow who lived alone. But they were blocked by locked doors and extreme heat, news reports from the time said.

When Campbell’s body was removed that afternoon, the community believed she had succumbed to smoke, but police soon reported that she had died in homicidal violence, likely before the fire started.

Her son, Rick Campbell, told The Mail-Tribune of Medford that he knows how his mother died because of an autopsy report he obtained as a family member, providing some closure. "Now I know what happened to Mom. It’s good to know what happened," he said. But he declined to reveal her cause of death because police asked him not to.

In the months after Campbell’s death, detectives tracked a variety of leads and interviewed more than 100 people, creating the massive case file that now sits with Harris. Detectives have eliminated several suspicious people who were considered to be of interest in the investigation, she reported.

Campbell’s family offered a $10,000 reward, which still stands, for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the murder and arson.

"This is going to be solved by someone talking rather than by what was found at the scene," Harris said. "I’m surprised we haven’t gotten more from the community. You would think word would get around in a small town."

She hopes the word will wend her way, even as she plows through the case report so far and works to balance the five-year-old homicide investigation with the constant stream of new cases assigned to her each day. She vows to follow up every tip, new and old.

"This just deserves to be solved," Harris said. "She was such an innocent victim."

The victim is buried in upstate New York. Investigators do not believe this victim is buried on the property Keyes owns in Constable, New York.

FBI: Serial killer tied to murders in Neah Bay, elsewhere in state. One body put in Lake Crescent

Federal agents have linked 11 killings to admitted serial killer Israel Keyes, including a murder in 2001 in Neah Bay and other deaths in Washington state, including one in which he put the body into Lake Crescent west of Port Angeles.

The identity of the victim is not known, and neither is the location of the murder.

The FBI documents said Keyes frequented prostitutes during his travels and killed an unidentified couple in Washington state sometime between July 2001 and 2005.

Keyes also told investigators he committed two separate murders between 2005 and 2006, disposing of at least one of the bodies from a boat in Lake Crescent, 30 miles west of Port Angeles.

Summer 1997 or Summer 1998: Keyes stated he abducted a female in the late afternoon or early evening while she and friends were tubing on the Deschutes River. Keyes sexually assaulted the female. He let her go and sent her on her tube back down the river. The victim in this case was between 14 and 18 years old. Investigators do not believe this sexual assault was reported to law enforcement. Keyes was living in Maupin, Oregon at the time and the abduction location is believed to be near Maupin.

Keyes turned his attention to the police officer and almost shot the officer. Keyes stated he chose not to shoot the officer or the couple when a second police officer drove into the parking lot.

May 2011: Keyes reported he staked out the North Fork Trailhead in Eagle River, Alaska with the intention of abducting someone. He prepared a cache a short distance up the road that contained Drano and a shovel which he intended to use to dispose of the body. Keyes denied taking a victim from this location.

Keyes disposed of a weapon stolen from the Currier home and the gun he used to shoot Bill Currier in Blakes River Falls Reservoir. These weapons and a nearby cache were recovered by the FBI. Following the murder, Keyes traveled around the east coast before driving back to Chicago. On June 15, 2011, Keyes flew from Chicago to San Francisco, only staying one night, returning to Anchorage on June 16, 2011.

FBI Timeline puts Keyes in the Western US between 9/15 - 9/25 2011

February 1, 2012: Keyes admitted to the abduction and murder of Samantha Koenig in Anchorage, Alaska. He disposed of her body in Matanuska Lake near Palmer, Alaska.

February 2, 2012 to February 18, 2012: Keyes flew to New Orleans where he went on a cruise until February 11th. After the cruise, he drove from New Orleans to Texas. Although he denied it, investigators believe Keyes may be responsible for a homicide in Texas or a surrounding state during this time.

On February 12, 2012, Keyes rented a blue 2011 Kia Soul from a Houston car rental agency and had the vehicle until February 18, 2012. Rental records show 2,847 miles were logged in that time period. In addition to Keyes’ time in Houston, investigators suspect he spent a large part of his time in the Dallas area, where his family lived.

Dallas/Fort Worth area - During February 2012, Keyes admitted traveling through the cities of Azle, Aledo, and Cleburne, Texas. Investigators suspect Keyes’ rental vehicle became stuck in a muddy, rural area, possibly near Cleburne, Texas, between February 12 and 16, 2012.

Glen Rose, Texas Area - Keyes is also suspected of visiting the Post Oak Cemetery in the Glen Rose, Texas area between February 12 and 16, 2012.


In the morning hours of February 16, 2012, Keyes set a home on fire in Aledo, Texas. Following the arson, he robbed National Bank of Texas in Azle, Texas.

Keyes flies from AK to Las Vegas on 3/6/12 and rents a white 2012 Ford Focus from Avis

On March 8, 2012, Keyes withdrew cash from an ATM at the Peoples State Bank in Shepherd, Texas.


On March 10, 2012, Keyes withdrew cash from an ATM at the Humble Community Bank in Humble, Texas.

3/11/2012: Wells, TX
Keyes' sister got married in Wells, TX on 3/11/12. His family, formerly Amish, are members of the radical/cultist "Church of Wells".

3/12/2012: Shepherd, TX

On March 13, 2012, Keyes was arrested for access device fraud related to using an ATM card of Anchorage murder victim Samantha Koenig.

(At the time of his arrest, Keyes had three telephone numbers in his possession. Investigators determined the numbers were of prostitutes—all from the Houston area.)

3/13/2012: Lufkin, TX
Keyes was arrested here on 3/13/12 after alert officers noticed his car matched the description of a car being used for illegal ATM withdrawals.

4/2/2012: Eagle Lake, AK
Tongass National Forest, Alaska 99929 - Samantha Koenig was found in the lake

ADDITONAL NOTES PROVIDED IN THE FBI UPDATED TIMELINE RELEASED ON AUGUST 12, 2013:

"Additional Caches:

Keyes admitted to burying a cache of money and guns near Green River, Wyoming. Known dates of travel to the Wyoming area are September 2007, July 2008, and September 2011.
Keyes admitted to burying a cache near Port Angeles, WA. Date unknown.

Additional Homicides:

Keyes provided additional details regarding the abduction and murder of a female. The female is described as having pale skin, possibly having a wealthy grandmother, and driving an older car at the time of her abduction.

Keyes indicated he committed only one murder in addition to Samantha Koenig in which the body was recovered. In this homicide, Keyes reported doing something to the victim’s body or moving the body to a location where, if found, it would appear as though the victim died from an accident. In this situation, the body was recovered and authorities ruled the death accidental.

Keyes traveled internationally and it is unknown if he committed any homicides while outside of the United States. In addition to the specific dates below, it is important to note that while living in New York, Keyes was in close proximity to the border with Canada and may have crossed into Canada on multiple occasions. He reported several trips to Montreal in which he sought out prostitutes. In addition, on his way to Alaska in 2007, Keyes drove alone through Canada. Law enforcement is aware of the following dates of international travel:

03/01/2007 to 03/09/2007 Canada (drove to Alaska)

No, she didn't disappear until April 25, 2009.

This person went missing on April 9, 2009 according to the FBI.
 
ok, I just spent a few hours this afternoon reviewing my IK timeline and updating the map with the new info.

Several things stood out to me that I have to go back and review again, and will probably muse aloud here later in regards to, but for now it just seems like a REALLY good idea to note that LE says he went to Montreal a lot to seek out prostitutes, and they say they do not know if he committed additional homicides on his international travel.

So... if any Montreal prostitutes or escorts or backpage/craigs list girls have gone missing (prior to about Feb, 2012), that might be a good list to compile...

anyhow, here's the updated map. my eyes are so blurry now it's not even funny, heh.

The first of your two links above says it was updated this morning, and I didn't read it last night but what it says now must be new because it refers to Tuesday which is today -

but can we ALL STOP!!...Think About This!!!..........Go back up above and just look at GGE'S timeline....You really think in all this traveling done by Keyes, there were just 11 victims???................NOT ME.......above link was to the last released article a few months back....I feel it really had a lot of new travels.....in the newly released article they make no mention of him being tied to Orlando Florida in 2009, Alabama and some more places.................I personally feel for every trip he took like this there was a victim of victims and some he confessed in the latest article were covered by arson???....that would be even more victims,
He stated he idolized Bundy...OK, he has already outranked Bundy in mileage coverage and Keyes was strong willed...I feel in the end (if they truly keep working on this case) he will have out-numbered Bundy and several others he idolized

I think there were approx. 11 randoms that he was willing to give up, but I think there were others that were too "special" to him to divulge for whatever reason. Just a gut instinct.

Just a quick note to anyone who might be reading my timeline post right now - I'm still editing it and I just noticed that on the interactive map/timeline released today (http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/201...released-in-serial-killer-case/keyes-timeline ) starting with 2007 I'm going to have to edit in dozens upon dozens of items, so bear with me - it's a work in progress, and at some point my edit-ability will come to an end, at which point I will have to quote myself and edit the quoted version... so... just know that it's very fluid for now. :)

ETA: and that time has come. I have a lot to edit in, so I'll post it again after I get more updated.
 
So, I'm wondering if Blanche Campbell could have been IK's first murder back in 2001. FBI says July, Blanche was murdered in May....he could have been off by 2 months. Neah Bay and Butte Falls are about 600 miles apart.

ETA - Never mind! Just read/remembered he wasn't discharged until July 2001. Cross Blanche off.
 
Why Montreal for prostitutes? There are prostitutes at most major cities. There must be more to this IMO.
