James Bradley Gunther, 62, was reported missing by his family to Coast Guard Sector Mobile watchstanders about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday. Gunther was piloting a sailing vessel from Gulf Shores, Ala., to Port St. Joe, Fla., and has failed to contact the family since Saturday.

Gunther's 48-foot sailing vessel, named Reliant, was found anchored near Ft. McRee, Fla., but there was no one aboard. The small white dinghy, normally with the sailing vessel, has also not been located.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana arrested Michael Paul Rodgers, 36, after Rodgers allegedly tried to use the personal information of James Bradley Gunther, according to an Escambia County Sheriff's Office social media report...

Rodgers tried to use Gunther's passport and other identification to obtain a Louisiana driver's license.

How Rodgers obtained the documents is reportedly under investigation.

The Escambia County, Fla. Sheriff's office says the the death of 62-year-old missing boater James Bradley Gunther of Gulf Shores is now a homicide investigation...

Rodgers, who is from Milton, Fla., is currently being held in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, on identity theft, resisting arrest, and fraud charges. Officials say it could be days or months before he is back in Florida...

ECSO confirmed that Gunther's family discovered his body after seeing a shovel sticking out of the sand. While authorities have determined a cause of death, they did not release details regarding the cause of death.

Death penalty sought in boater's murder
In a press conference, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said that investigators would be serving a homicide warrant to 36-year-old Michael Paul Rodgers, who is jailed in Louisiana on fraud and theft charges. (...)

Morgan said Rodgers was charged based on that connection and other evidence. State Attorney Bill Eddins said that his office would seek the death penalty based on Rodgers' criminal history, which includes rape and robbery convictions.

Because the charges Rodgers faces in Escambia County are more serious than the ones he faces in Jefferson Parrish, Eddins said that his office would be working with Louisiana prosecutors to have Rodgers tried in Escambia County first

His body was found buried on the beach, the shovel with him. The handle was sticking out which led authorities to Mr. Gunther's remains. Horribly barbaric crime. Thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Florida authorities are working to extradite Rodgers back to the Pensacola area for prosecution. If he waives extradition, the process will take only a few days. But if he decides to mount a challenge, Eddins said it could take weeks, even months.

Rodgers was being held at the Gretna jail Tuesday in lieu of a $30,500 bond on charges of access device fraud, identity theft valued between $500 and $999, resisting arrest by refusing to provide identification and resisting arrest by force or violence. But he is being held without bond as a fugitive from Florida.

"Gunther's body, which was discovered on NAS Pensacola last week, was identified on Thursday, April 21, 2016; the same day a homicide warrant was issued for Rodgers."

Jury finds man guilty of killing boater at Fort McRee

http://www.pnj.com/story/news/crime/2017/10/04/jury-finds-man-guilty-killing-boater-fort-mcree/733483001/

An Escambia County jury found Michael Paul Rodgers guilty of first-degree murder after roughly 90 minutes of deliberations Wednesday.

Judge Thomas Dannheisser immediately sentenced Rodgers to life in prison.

After the verdict was read, Gunther talked about his father to the judge. He called him a smart man who took care of his family and helped others.

"I just wanted him to know what kind of man he is so when he wakes in the morning he can think about what he did and relay that image through his head of what happened that day. I hope it haunts him for the rest of his life to be quite honest," Gunther said.
