AL AL - Kimberly Whitton, 36, & Haleigh Culwell, 11, Section, 21 June 2007

As the one year anniversary approaches of the disappearance of Kimberly Whitton and Haliegh Culwell, the mother and daughter haven't been forgotten at Cloverdale Manor Nursing Home in Scottsboro.

Kimberly Whitton, an employee of the nursing home, was last seen on June 21, 2007 by co-workers.

Ever since, employees of the nursing home have formed a bond with Whitton's family.

Sounds like a really great community.

The family of Kimberly Whitton was in court for Friday's stunning testimony about her husband. Whitton and her daughter Haleigh Culwell have not been seen in more than a year. And after the testimony, they said they now have no doubt about who is responsible.

Behind testimony from a government informant, U.S. District Judge Sharon Lovelace Blackburn sentenced Barry Whitton to a maximum 10 years Friday.

Blackburn said it was the maximum sentence she could give Whitton, but it was inadequate due to him being a danger to the public.

I hope they find evidence of the missing bodies before his sentence is carried out. The judge is correct as this man is huge menace to society and doesn't deserve to be among people. He is horrible!

I wish Kimberly and Haliegh would be found.

And I hope this never leaves the prison.

Bless you Kimberly and Haleigh where ever you are.... Hope you are found and justice is served if need be..

Jackson Co. man indicted for 1997 death of first wife

JACKSON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Police believe they can finally close an 18-year-old murder case.

Court documents show a grand jury handed down an indictment against Barry Van Whitton in the death of his first wife, Michelle.

She disappeared in 1997, and was later found beaten and stabbed to death in DeKalb County.

Whitton told police Michelle went out for breakfast and never came back home.

Six weeks later, she was found beaten and stabbed to death and buried in a shallow grave.

Fast forward 10 years, to 2007. Whitton is re-married, and the same thing happens.

His second wife, Kimberly, and her young daughter, Haleigh Culwell, disappear.

A Jackson County man who was recently arrested for the murder of his wife two decades ago plead not guilty Tuesday.

Barry Whitton entered his plea during an arraignment hearing at the Jackson County courthouse that lasted approximately five minutes. Security was heavy in and around the courtroom as armed guards took no chances with a suspect whose first wife was killed and second wife disappeared without a trace.

Last fall, Barry Whitton was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his first wife, Michelle Whitton.

Barry Van Whitton will spend the rest of his life in prison for bludgeoning his first wife, Michelle Townson Whitton, to death with the butt of a shotgun nearly 18 years ago in their Jackson County home.

Whitton, 46, made no statement to the court before Jackson County Circuit Judge John Graham handed down the sentence, the maximum that the former Section resident faced in the 1997 murder.

Michelle Whitton, who would have been 46 years old on Wednesday, disappeared a few weeks before Christmas 1997. She was found buried in a shallow grave in neighboring DeKalb County about six weeks later, on Jan. 20, 1998 – her son Ethan's second birthday.

Strange also pointed out that Whitton's imprisonment could prompt new leads in other cases Whitton might be involved in. Though the attorney general did not specify which cases he was referring to, Whitton is a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his second wife, Kimberly Compton Whitton, and her 11-year-old daughter, Haleigh Brean Culwell.

"I hope that this conviction will potentially lead to more evidence that may lead us to solve other crimes that Mr. Whitton may have been involved in. I hope now that he has been put away, that others may come forward with information that they have," Strange said.

Whitton is currently serving a federal sentence on gun charges brought against him during investigators' search Kim Whitton and her daughter. A convicted felon, Barry Whitton was not allowed to possess firearms found in the couple's home.

I know the husband/step-dad went to jail for being a felon and having a gun, or something like that, but does anyone know if he ever admitted to killing them? I live in this area, and it seems loike people have just forgotten about them since he went to jail. FYI, I have not, and it makes me sick to think that people just "forgot."

He was in jail on gun charges when he was found guilty of murdering his first wife. What a shame that it didn't happen before he apparently killed two more people in his life.
