Monday, November 14, 2010 - live interview with Desiree on the Today Show

    Transcription

Mom: Stepmom had 'severe hatred' for Kyron
    http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/40192247#40192247

Q (indicates a question was asked by the reporter)

Desiree: Well we're, we're still a united front in the goal that we want Kyron home and we want answers. That hasn't changed.

I personally have learned of information lately that has disappointed me in Kaine's choices and his behavior, and I just can't stand by and support the choices that he's making.

Q: court documents ... yet he never shared any of his concerns with you. Is that correct?

Desiree: That's correct. We learned of all of this information after the fact and from the media.

He had several opportunities to let Tony and I know what was going on in the house and he did not. He had several opportunities to make the right choice and either let me know or remove Kyron from the house.

I would have removed Kyron from the house had I have known what was going on.

    Q

Desiree: I did not see any signs of the alc... Yeah. I did not see any evidence of the alcohhol abuse in fact I didn't know about the DUI until after Kyron went missing.

But as far as a personality disorder, I did for years, I was aware that she had some issues with pathological lying, things of that nature, but just mostly from my interactions with her, I don't... I didn't see, you know, as much as Kaine did.

    Q

Desiree: Oh yes I did. Starting a year prior to his, him going missing, I tried to get custody of him.

    Q

Desiree: Kaine told me it was not an option on several occasions, and it was a point of contention with us.

He was exhibiting some problems in school and he was expressing a lot of sadness and upset at the situation, and Kyron on many occasions told me he wanted to come live with me, and on a couple of different occasions Terri had called me specifically so that I could talk to Kyron because he was so upset, and Terri personally wanted me to take Kyron.

Q (paraphrased - on Friday LE showed Desiree emails Terri had sent to friends describing her marriage to Kaine and her feelings about Kyron)

Desiree: It's very clear from Terri's horrible words that she had a severe hatred for Kyron, and that a lot... she blamed a lot of the marital problems between Kaine and herself on Kyron, that it was a huge point of contention in their marriage, and she had expressed in great detail her hatred for Kyron.

I now believe without a shadow of a doubt that not only is she capable of hurting Kyron, that it's clear that she could have hurt him in the worst possible way.

Q (paraphrased - do you hold out hope he's alive?)

Desiree: I will until the day I die.

Conflict between Kaine/Desiree statements re: red flags/crying

    Desiree:

"Kyron became increasingly unhappy about not spending time with me. He wanted to come live with [me and his stepdad]," Young says. "Several times he would just break down and sob because he wanted to stay."

    (This article has the video)

    http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20401700,00.html

She described "red flags," such as Kyron's increasing unhappiness with returning to his father and stepmother's Portland home after visiting his mother.

"He wanted to come live with us," she said. "Several times he would just break down and sob because he wanted to stay."

    http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2010/07/kyron_hormans_mother_desiree_y_1.html

    Kaine:

Q: What were the "red flags" or warning signs that Desiree Young thought she may have missed prior to Kyron's disappearance? Desiree told the Today Show that Kyron seemed increasingly unhappy when he left their home after his visits with the Youngs. Kaine, did you see any warning signs and if so what?

A: Desiree's quote was not taken in its entirety. As a younger boy, Kyron can express distress when going from one household to the other if he has been having a great time and is looking forward to upcoming activities with that particular household. There was no abnormal amount of this happening after he left Desiree's household or when he left ours to go visit Desiree. He has been unhappy several times when he has had to leave our house to go visit Desiree, nothing Desiree or I would deem out of the ordinary.

Kaine press conference, Monday, November 14, 2010

The father of missing Portland boy Kyron Horman says the relationship between his wife and son was strained prior to the boy’s disappearance.

In a news conference with Portland's media today, Kaine Horman said he had arguments with his wife about how he found her relationship with their children “unacceptable.”

He says he has been briefed on e-mails and phone calls Terri has had with other people and that they’ve contributed to his belief that his estranged wife is an alcoholic.

“We’re doing anything we can to discover, 'Who is this person we've been around?' It's not the person we thought it was. It's a completely different person living a separate life,” Kaine Horman said.

    http://www.kptv.com/news/25797873/detail.html

At the press conference, Kaine said he had not watched the Today Show and was filled-in by reporters.

He acknowledged the boy's unhappiness about moving between the two homes. Kyron would be unhappy about it, but Kaine said he considered the child's behavior a normal part of separation anxiety.

He and Desiree spoked about the child's emotions but Kaine said it was not something he thought required a change in custody arrangements. At the end of the summer when Kyron returned to Medford for a weekend, he said he would rather stay in Portland, Kaine said.

    http://www.kgw.com/news/Kaine-Horman-Terri-Horman-master-of-deception-108218104.html

"We're dealing with someone who is a master of deception, misdirection, and she's bringing it forward in spades," Kaine said of Terri during a press conference at the boy's 'Wall of Hope'

Since the investigation started, he has heard directly from friends and family about conversations they had with Terri.

He realizes now, unfortunately not when they were together, that she was crafting an image of her relationship with him and children in their household that was untrue.

Kaine told reporters that a good example of Terri's deception was her alcoholism. She hid it from him well, he said.

"It's only the tip of the iceberg" of her flaws, she said.

Monday Nov 14 2010 Kaine press conference

Kaine Horman told reporters today that he never thought that his son Kyron was in danger around his estranged wife in the months before he disappeared.

    snip

He said it wasn't until recently, after conversations with friends and family and talking to people who know about alcoholism, that he said he realized she was an alcoholic.

He said she exhibited odd behavior but he didn't know what it meant.

"I had no idea what the problem was," he said. "All of a sudden it comes right into focus."

Monday Nov 14 2010 Kaine press conference

"She could have done it on her own, or with an accomplice," Kaine said. "Do I hope she had an accomplice? Absolutely, I do. Cause then there's a higher probability he's alive."

Despite his belief that Terri had something to do with Kyron's disappearance, Kaine said he didn't foresee this as a possibility.

"She's a master of deception and misdirection," Kaine said.

"Her (Terri's) relationships with the children in general were not acceptable," he added.

    snip

"She (Desiree) did ask (about custody), but there was never a court request, there was never a legal request, it was her and I talking about what was best at the time," Kaine said.

"And, based on that circumstance--he was gone (with Desiree) for six or seven weeks and then coming back home--he missed his mom, it's not enough grounds for 'hey we need to switch custody.'"

E-mail: Terri Horman accuses Kaine of being overbearing
    Video: http://www.katu.com/news/local/108352154.html?tab=video
    Article: http://www.katu.com/news/local/108352154.html?

Regarding email sent by Terri April 6, two months before Kyron disappeared:

Desiree: extreme... extreme hatred for Kyron and she talks about hurting him and things that you just don't talk about with children. I mean, I don't understand how you can feel that way about a 7 year old.

Desiree: I no longer had that little part of me that hoped that she hadn't done anything to Kyron. I realized that she is capable of hurting him, and that was the hardest part about it.

Desiree: I’m just upset that Kyron wasn’t protected when he needed to be and that unfortunately was on Kaine’s watch.

    Article:

Young said it is now clear that Terri dislikes her and believes she transferred that to Kyron.

    snip

She said she struggles with anger and guilt because she didn’t know more.

    snip

She said she’s mainly upset right now by finding out things - like Terri’s alleged alcoholism - through the media and court documents and not from Kaine. Kaine said he’s not hiding anything and is just finding out all of this, too.

Kaine: “We’re dealing with someone who I referred to earlier as a professional at misdirection and deceit. That’s exactly what (Terri’s) all about,” Kaine said. “And sitting here and trying to blame an individual for that, aside from the individual who carried out whatever happened to Kyron that day – it’s unnecessary. It doesn’t need to be done, but I understand. That if it helps people to put blame on me for this then go right ahead if it makes you feel better as long as you get right back out and start looking for him then that’s fine. But I don’t hold myself responsible. I’m not going to hold myself hostage for this event that happened to him.”

Kaine: “I know that she’s extremely upset. I don’t know it’s necessarily at me or anyone else in particular. We’re all having a hard time with this,” he said. “I’m just chalking it up to just one of those really difficult times that we’re going through right now. It’s getting close to the holidays – we’re all really emotional about this and as far as how our relationship is doing, it’s fine. We haven’t spoken for a little bit longer than normal but that will be rectified here shortly with the holidays coming up … I’m not worried about it at all.”

Transcribed from video. Slightly different from what's in the article.

Kaine: We’re, we're dealing with someone who I, I referred to earlier as a professional at misdirection and deceit.

That, that’s exactly what she’s all about, and sitting here and trying to blame an individual for that, aside from the individual who carried out whatever happened to Kyron that day – you know, I just, it, it’s, it's unnecessary.

It doesn’t need to be done, but, you know, I understand that if it helps people to put blame on me for this then go right ahead if it makes you feel better as long as you get right back out and start looking for him then that’s fine, but I don’t hold myself responsible, and I’m not going to hold myself hostage for the thing, for this event that happened to him.

Kaine: I know that she’s extremely upset. I don’t know that it’s necessarily at me or at anyone else in particular.

We’re all having a hard time with this.

I'm just, I'm just, I’m just chalking it up to it's just one of those really difficult times that we’re going through right now.

It’s, you know, getting close to the holidays.

We’re all, we're all up... really emotional about this, and, you know, as far as how our relationship is doing, it’s fine.

We haven’t spoken for a little bit longer than normal but that's, that will be rectified here shortly with the holidays coming up, and kind of getting past some things.

I’m not worried about it at all.

Transcription - Good Morning America interview of Kaine - Friday, November 19, 2010

Reporter: How do you handle the day to day of this, of having no breaking news in this case?

Kaine: Well, it's tough. It hurts the same almost as the first day that he went, that he went missing.

Reporter: Desiree says she can't support the choices that you are making.

Kaine: We're in a really tough, long, emotional situation. I know that she's extremely upset. You know we haven’t spoken for a little bit longer than normal but that's, that will be rectified here shortly with the holidays coming up, and kind of getting past some things.

Reporter: Have you seen the emails that are being talked about where Terri allegedly talks about hurting Kyron?

Kaine: Yeah, well, I, I've seen them. Yes.

Reporter: What is in those emails?

Kaine: I'm not gonna talk about it. It's information that's supposed to be confidential to the investigation, and...

Reporter: Did they only solidify your belief that Terri's responsible?

Kaine: Everything that we see moving forward just adds to the pile.

Show the April 6 email to a friend (not one from LE shown Kaine/Desi) obtained by KATU.

Reporter: Is there any truth to what she said?

Kaine: Oh I don't think so at all. She's the one who approaches me about, hey can you help me with getting my diet dialed in because I feel like I'm out of shape and stuff like that so I help her, and then what does she do? She turns around and tells people that it's me saying she's fat.

Reporter: I've heard everything from that Terri was mad at Desiree, Terri was mad at you, Terri was angry with Kyron. What's the reality?

Kaine: The reality is we don't know.

Reporter: Does it hurt when you're blamed for things?

Kaine: You know, honestly, no. I came out and sat with, we sat with you and I told you what, four months ago, that I felt responsible for things that happened. We didn't stand a chance. We're dealing with someone who, I referred to earlier as a professional at misdirection and deceit, and if it helps people put blame on me for this? Then go right ahead if it makes you feel better as long as you get right back out and start looking for him, then that's fine.

Statement from Stephen Houze, Terri's attorney:

We are unable to respond. To do so would be a violation of clear ethical standards. There are matters currently pending before an Oregon court concerning Miss Horman.

Transcription of CBS Early Show interview with Kaine - Friday November 19, 2010

Reporter: Some of the comments that Desiree made this week clearly got a lot of attention. Did they surprise you?

Kaine: I wouldn't say that they surprised me. We're... (laughs) This has been going on for so long, we're all just emotionally strung out.

Reporter: How much do you worry that people will forget?

Kaine: I worry about it all the time. We went to, we went out yesterday to one of the local malls and passed out fliers to the businesses. A couple comments of Oh I thought he was home already. And that just reaffirms that we gotta keep getting it out there.

Reporter: (regarding having a full time job and caring for K) How challenging is all of that for you?

Kaine: It's a heavy load but you just step up.

Kaine: She has me sit next to her and read a book while she reads a book because her companion's not there.

Reporter: The first holiday season coming up. Have you thought about how you'll handle that? Do you try to not think about that at all?

Kaine: It's difficult. I miss him the same every day whether it's a Thanksgiving holiday or just a Tuesday. It doesn't change.

Reporter: At the end of our interview, Kaine turned unexpectedly to the camera, addressing his son directly.

Kaine: You know, we love you very much. We're still looking for you, we're, every day. Home is safe. It's just K and I, and we're waiting for you.

Kaine Horman speaks out about vicious legal battle
Posted on November 19, 2010 at 8:51 AM

KGW interview with Kaine - he wanted to clarify some of the points he made in his press conference on Monday.

    Transcription

Reporter: Kaine Horman says he wishes his estranged wife, Terri, was still by his side, still helping in the search for Kyron Horman. He also says he knows wishing doesn't make it happen, and he believes she had something to do with Kyron's disappearance.

Reporter: Kaine wanted to speak today to clarify some points he made at a press conference earlier this week.

One thing that doesn't need any clearing up - his focus on finding his son.

Kaine: This is the most difficult thing I've ever been through in my life.

Kaine: This is all about him and his sister, and there should be no doubt about that.

Reporter: In the divorce proceedings, Kaine accuses Terri of drunkenness, and sending sexually explicit text messages to another man. Kaine says he understands why some consider that mudslinging. He sees it differently.

Kaine: The legal fight for Kyron is at our doorstep right now. Even the judge has stated that this is all about finding Kyron and bringing him home, and there should be nothing that prevents that or deters from that, and this is definitely not deterring from it in one bit.

Reporter: Kaine also says he's focused on protecting the couple's daughter. He says Terri has already caused more damage to the young girl then she'll ever be able to repair, and says visitation rights for Terri would only hurt the girl more.

Kaine: To then come back and file and say hey, we're doing stuff in the best interest of the child, I don't think she has any idea what it means to do something in the best interest of any child at this point.

Kaine: Don't worry for a second. We're out here looking for you. And we just, we just love you more than anything else.

    June 25 KPTV

Reporter: Detectives have told us many times that in this case they're leaving no stone unturned. Have they searched your homes, your cars and your property?

Desiree Young: They haven't needed to search our house as of yet. But they're welcome to. Anything that they need to do, we're definitely letting them do.

Reporter: Kaine, can you talk about your property?

Kaine Horman: Yeah, they've been down to search many times and they're welcome to search many more times. Whatever it takes to find him.
Reporter: Actually in the house, as well?

    Kaine Horman: Yes.
