The discovery was made just before 5 p.m. while the property owner was clearing brush, the sheriff's office said.

"Based on the location of the remains and evidence found at the scene, detectives suspect the remains are those of Allyson Watterson," the sheriff's office said in a statement on Saturday.

Watterson went missing in December. She was last seen with her boyfriend, who is considered a person of interest in her disappearance, Washington County Sheriff's Sgt. Danny DiPietro told ABC News on Monday.

The initial investigation into her disappearance generated widespread attention. Deputies said at the time that there was a 30-hour delay between when Watterson was last seen and the time she was reported missing.

Her boyfriend’s father told deputies his son, Benjamin Garland, and Watterson had been on a hike before they became separated. Watterson’s mom, Misty Watterson, told reporters her daughter and Garland had been in North Plains to visit a friend when their car broke down.

The sheriff’s office said at the time it had no evidence to support either claim.

"Knowing her the way I know her, I just I can’t imagine why she would have made her way into that space. It’s just not sinking in," Macy said.

Macy said the family is taking solace from support in the community, but that Allyson leaves a void behind.

"I miss holding her hand, I miss sitting next to her during sleepovers, I miss I just miss a future with her. I want nothing more than to grow old with her. She’s my wonderful little niece," she said.

Deputy van Kleef said they should know the cause of death from the medical examiner in the next few weeks. He anticipates that will guide the investigation moving forward.

One year since Christmastime disappearance, Allyson Watterson's family wants answers | KOMO (komonews.com)
    [...]

Last year, it was a Christmastime, community-wide effort, with "missing person" flyers plastered nearly everywhere around town. The Washington County Sheriff's Office told KATU News those flyers drove them to keep looking.

"That kind of outpouring of love and support just shows how much that she was cared for by her family, her friends, and her community. That spurs us along, too," said Washington County sheriff's Sgt. Robert Rookhuyzen.

But Rookhuyzen said they're still waiting for test results from the state's medical examiner and still waiting for tips from the community.

    [...]

"The investigation still needs to determine whether this is a homicide, a tragic accident, or something else. And so, we've got to be very open and objective to all those possibilities still," Rookhuyzen said.

    [...]

“I’m sure Washington County has done the job they feel like they deemed necessary and all the right protocols -- I’m not here to say whether they have or not -- but we are on our own over here," she told KATU News. “Until some of those gaps are filled in, we are sitting here thinking the worst.”
