Hope, Ark. — Two Hempstead County men have seemingly disappeared from the face of the Earth.

Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton said Tuesday that, in addition to the March disappearance of Casey Clark, 31, of Fulton, authorities are seeking information on the whereabouts of Joseph Christopher Cowart, 58, of Hope, who has been missing since May 15.

“It's just like he left the house, locked the door, and disappeared,” Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton said. “His bank accounts, cell phone, phones hadn't been used; his retirement checks hadn't been cashed. There is nothing that has developed out of this case.”

According to documents filed in probate in Hempstead County, Cowart left his 1991 LT Ford F150 truck parked in the carport at the rear of his expansive brick home on Spring Hill Road; and $1,269.70 in cash in various places throughout the residence.

“We got his computer and looked on it for any correspondence, but there wasn't anything that really stood out,” Singleton said.

Searches of the residential grounds and an approximately 80-acre tract of land to the rear of the residential grounds, which Cowart had sold to a Hope family and has since become a private hunting tract, provided no evidence of Cowart.

Cowart's return to Hope appears to have been fostered by the need to care for his parents. His father died in 2006 and his mother died in 2010. Both parents died intestate, or without a probated will.

Cowart was alone at the time of his disappearance; but, he is considered a quiet, independent type of man.

“He didn't have any social media; no Facebook page, anything like that,” Singleton said. “He had some emails, but there were businesses; credit cards and things like that. There was nothing that would point us in any specific direction.”

Both Manus and Singleton noted that Cowart liked to take outings in Texarkana.

Singleton said, and court filings confirm, that Cowart has two children; a son and daughter, one of whom lives in Arizona and the other in North Carolina.

“We did get DNA swabs from them,” Singleton said.

He said Cowart was interested in the health impact of mercury-based filings in teeth. Thomason said Cowart struck him as very detail-minded and methodical; soft-spoken and quiet.

Cowart's only remaining Hope relative is his mother's brother, Steve Marlar. It was Marlar who reported Cowart missing.

Marlar declined to give an extensive interview for this story.

Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton thought he would be solving a mystery when a forensic lab finally identified a skull found on a Red River sandbar more than two years ago...

Hempstead County deputies also were looking for Joseph Christopher Cowart, 58, who disappeared from his Hope home May 15, 2012...

Officials at the state Crime Lab in Little Rock forwarded it to the Center for Human Identification at the University of North Texas in Denton on Sept. 30, 2014, where the university's forensic anthropology department could assist.

Scientists there determined the skull was from a young male Caddo Indian and was about four centuries old.

Joseph is still missing.

Skeletal remains found in Hempstead County have been identified as a local man who has been missing since 2012.

Joseph Christopher Cowart, 58, was positively identified by the Arkansas State Medical Examiner on Wednesday, said Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton.

No foul play is suspected.
