''Police have arrested a man who they say was armed and had gained access to the grounds at Rideau Hall early Thursday morning.

Police were called to the area around 6:40 a.m. after the man accessed 1 Sussex Dr., RCMP said in a tweet.

A source told CBC News the man had driven from Manitoba and had a long gun and a note with him. The source — who spoke on the condition they not be named because they were not authorized to discuss the case — did not know the details of the note nor what kind of long gun it was.

Rideau Hall is the Governor General's official residence. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family also live on the property at Rideau Cottage.''

Armed man gained access to Rideau Hall and was arrested, RCMP says
''The man's identity hasn't been released because charges are pending.

The Mounties did not reveal further details, but The Canadian Press saw the gate to one side entrance was bent and a police robot examining a black pick-up truck further into the estate.

The iconic Rideau Hall has long served as the home to Canada's governors general, but Trudeau and his family have also lived in a home on the property since he was elected prime minister.''

Public asked to avoid Sussex Drive due to 'police operation' | Ottawa Citizen
''The man is a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, according to sources.

Later Thursday morning, a police explosives robot was used to search a four-door black Dodge Ram on the grounds.''

''The truck apparently crashed through one of the gates and its air bags were deployed.

A number of items, including what appeared to be Canadian Forces rations were seen in the back seat. Pieces of clothing were delicately picked up and examined by the robot.''

Military reservist in custody after Rideau Hall armed incident wanted to speak to PM: source
''Sources tell Global News that the suspect was a member of the Canadian Rangers, a group of reservists responsible for patrolling Canada’s North.

Sources also say the man had multiple firearms — one rifle and two shotguns — and that he told police he did not want to hurt them or anyone there. One source said the man indicated he wanted to speak to the prime minister and send him a message. He surrendered to police peacefully.

The man said he had recently lost his job and expressed frustration about government payouts amid the coronavirus pandemic. He said Ottawa wasn’t doing enough, according to sources.''

''An armed man arrested after allegedly ramming his truck through the front gate of Rideau Hall in Ottawa worked at a rural community grocery store in west-central Manitoba and had recently posted about hardships as a result of COVID-19.

Corey Hurren lived in Bowsman, Man., a small municipality about 400 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.''

''Hurren also operated Grindhouse Fine Foods, which he launched in 2014, according to a LinkedIn account registered to Hurren.

In promotional material for his meat-producing business, Hurren is described as a Royal Canadian Artillery veteran who recently rejoined the military as a Canadian Ranger. ''

''Roughly an hour before Hurren entered the Rideau Hall grounds, a Facebook page associated with his Grindhouse Fine Foods business posted a meme of a big outdoor party that would supposedly occur after the lockdown ''

''Otherwise, Facebook posts from Hurren's business appear to poke fun at the hardships and fears spawned by the pandemic. The page shows a fondness for the military as well.''

''Duheme said the man had “several weapons” on him at the time, including at least one gun, but was not known to RCMP prior to Thursday''.

It could have been worse. I remember when a mentally ill man broke into the palace and the Queen woke up to him sitting on the side of her bed. She was a trooper though! She talked to him calmly and kindly until help arrived. He came to sexually assault her I believe. This was in 1982.

Man who rammed Rideau Hall gates pleads guilty to eight charges | Toronto Sun
''A man accused of ramming through a gate at Rideau Hall and heading toward Justin Trudeau’s home while heavily armed pleaded guilty to eight charges in court Friday.

Corey Hurren, a 46-year-old Manitoba military reservist and sausage-maker, had faced 21 weapons charges and one of threatening the prime minister.''

''At no point did Hurren tell police he wanted to kill Trudeau, according to the statement. He also told police he didn’t want to hurt them and did not point a weapon at them as officers tried to de-escalate the incident.

While police were talking Hurren down, they received a complaint from one of his friends, who reported that Hurren had sent him “a disturbing text message containing a picture of a suicide note. In this note, Hurren stated he could not cope with the restrictions of COVID-19, the financial loss sustained due to the closure of his business and the recent firearm ban and felt that Canada was now under a communist dictatorship,” according to the statement.''

''A former military reservist who rammed a gate at Rideau Hall before arming himself and heading on foot toward Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s home two and a half years ago “continues to pose a risk to society,” a court has found, in dismissing his bid to appeal his sentence.

In a decision released Thursday, the Court of Appeal for Ontario supported the sentencing judge’s assessment that Corey Hurren had “committed a politically motivated armed assault intended to intimidate Canada’s elected government” in the July 2020 incident.

The Manitoba man’s sentence of six years was appropriate, according to the panel of judges, who orally dismissed Hurren’s appeal following a hearing last Wednesday.''
