Aruba - Natalee Holloway, 18, Oranjestad, 30 May 2005 *AL extortion trial* *Guilty* #3

He's in jail, not even in prison yet. (in USA). It makes 1000% sense to me that he wants to get back down there.

It's impossible to know what JVS truly prefers. Only he can answer that with accuracy. Yet he is a pathological liar, and what he says are words to suit his agenda of the moment. He'll tell you what he thinks will get you to give him what he wants. So it may be mostly true, or it may be half true, or it may be all lies, but who knows - whatever it is, I wouldn't put a lot of stock in it.

But it doesn't have to matter to us anyway what he thinks (or says he thinks) of this prison or that. His supposed preferences won't change anything or make his future easier. His sentence in Peru is what it is, and stays the same (unless he acts up in prison and it gets lengthened). When he finishes that sentence (if he doesn't die before it ends), then (assuming he is convicted on this charge) he doesn't go free, but instead he serves more prison time in a different country. As a matter of justice, that works and there's no downside - and there's too much proof already that every day he is kept off the streets in a cell somewhere is a day that's safer for the women of the world.

Joran van der Sloot,
who remains the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway, is hoping to negotiate a plea deal in the fraud and extortion case related to the missing American teen, The Messenger has learned.

American attorneys for van der Sloot, who's currently awaiting trial in a jail in Holloway's home state of Alabama, have met at least twice with federal prosecutors to facilitate a deal in the case, sources confirm.

If an agreement can be reached, van der Sloot would avoid a lengthy trial on U.S. soil and return to Peru, where he was convicted of murder in 2010.

There’s only one thing he has to offer that US authorities want.

If he can’t give them that then NO DEAL!

@Niner -- As of the Order signed 9/12/23, here are some new dates pursuant to the defendant’s second unopposed motion (Doc. 35) to extend the trial and pretrial deadlines established by the court’s Scheduling Order:

2. The deadline for pretrial motions is extended to November 13, 2023, with any response due no later than November 20, 2023.

3. The parties shall notify the court on the earliest practicable business day the lawyers are able to determine whether the case is to be placed on the consent docket or scheduled for trial but, in either case, not later than November 20, 2023.

The trial date will be set by separate order by a United States District Judge...

So sorry for Natalee's loved ones who may never know the truth. I hope I am wrong and one day the truth is revealed. He's a pathological liar, narcissist - lacking remorse, guilt, and empathy. moo

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A federal judge agreed to delay Joran van der Sloot’s trial on extortion charges until later this year in order to give his defense more time to prepare.

Van der Sloot told the Holloway family’s representative that his father buried Natalee’s remains in gravel beneath the foundation of a home, but later admitted that was a lie.

I recall this story being floated at the same time Joran was doing a shake-down of Natalee's mother. Liar, liar, pants on fire. He has no credibility with me. MOO

Hearing set for Wednesday 10/18 at 9:30 a.m.

Makes sense. What difference does the prison penalty mean if actually imposed after serving in Peru. (I mean what difference between 8 years, 15 years. Etc)

Prediction: he will accumulate other charges in Peru over time or even be killed over $$ deals. I wonder what the agreement is, ie whether jvds serves all time due in Peru before returning to USA. Or if he serves just the time due as of his sentencing date in 2023. This sounds confusing I guess. What I wonder is if he accumulates more offenses in Peru after those already presently incurred will future penalties be served in Peru before he would be sent to the usa.

Sorry I need my morning coffee!

OK the only thing left for cyber wagers....how many years will they give him now...I bet about 5-10. Imo they can't give him more than we daily see our own usa scoundrels get.

Joran van der Sloot extortion case nearing an end? Plea, sentencing hearing set

The order is public, it was a text order, meaning there is no separate document, it's nothing more than what's written in the docket, which was:

"TEXT ORDER as to Joran Andreas Petrus Van Der Sloot (001). Plea and Sentencing Hearing set for 10/18/2023 at 09:30 AM, Special Proceedings Courtroom, 8th Floor, Hugo L Black US Courthouse, Birmingham, AL before Judge Anna M Manasco. Signed by Judge Anna M Manasco on 10/13/2023. (FNC) (Entered: 10/13/2023)"

Wow all said and done with sentencing and all at once. I wonder if they really made him take a polygraph as was mentioned earlier.

Unfortunately, we have no reason to think this outcome will provide any of the answers that the Holloway family would like.

There's no question JVDS was caught redhanded of committing a scam for money, and would have been found guilty had this gone to trial. I suspect any judge or jury would have thrown the book at him, in light of what he did and the circumstances.

Given that reality, apparently he has decided to get it over with and try to lessen his losses.

What will it look like? One option is that he can plead guilty, avoid a trial, and accept whatever sentence he is given, and never offer a word of explanation. I suspect that's what will be happening, because what we want is a confession of his murder of Natalee with proof provided it happened like he said (showing him guilty of another murder, of course). And let's be real, he's not going to serve up his murder with proof on a platter, and any explanation he provides without rock solid proof has a very high chance of being a total fabrication. So it's questionable how much value that a statement from him could offer the family (or us) anyhow.

Since a guilty plea removes the state's cost and tie-up of courtrooms, witnesses, investigators, prosecutors, judges, and other personnel that are part of a trial, it would be likely that the state would offer a "discount" on the sentence if he pleads guilty. I'd wager that has happened (although the discount could be small).

However, as unsatisfying as that might seem, every extra year added to the time JVDS will serve in prison is another year he's off the streets and unable to prey on women. So having years behind bars increased, whatever they may be, is a win for all of us in my book.

Just my 2c.
